My wife and I have a 16 month old son. We've been brainstorming for ideas of kid-friendly adult songs to make up a CD for all of us to listen to.

The Beatles "One" CD is on regular rotation in the morning. He likes to dance to several of the songs in the 1st half (early stuff).

There's a crazy remake of The Carpenters' "Top Of The World" by Shonen Knife (http://www.amazon.com/If-Were-Carpenter-Various-Artists/dp/B000005IL6), a Japanese all-girl punk band, which is really excellent (he loves it).

I'm looking for other suggestions of non-kid music that turns out to be kid friendly and adult friendly.

They Might be Giants here come the ABC's and Here come the 123's

Very catchy tunes even for adults.

Oldies are great and so is doo-wop , or classic Soul - Marvin Gaye, the 4 Tops, Smokey Robinson, The Platters

Yep. Like the Beatles' CD, you can pretty much throw in any TMBG CD and it's perfect.

I have MG and James Brown greatest hits on CD... might have a find a track of two from those.

Some that my 3-year old likes:
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Flaming Lips
Be Good Tanyas
Billy Bragg and Wilco Mermaid Avenue Sessions
The Decemberists
Allison Krauss
Any Reggae (Toots and the Maytals especially because it's high energy)
Any bluegrass, heavy on the breakdowns.

There's a compilation CD called "Stay Awake" that's all Disney songs done by various artists like James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt. Very nice, good for kids, and good tunes.

We made a killer CD compilation the day my son was born.

The song we dedicated to him was "Beautiful Boy" by John Lennon

It also had songs on it,

Child of the Moon - Rolling Stones
She loves you - Beatles
some Baroque music - which he REALLY loved

My 2 year old girl LOVES - Typical by Mute Math

How did it go?

Peter Percival Patterson had a pet pig named Porky. This pet pig Porky loved pie. He loved pizza pie, pumpkin pie, pineapple pie, pizza pie...mince tarts. Peter Percival Patterson's pet pig Porky loved pie so much, you know what he did?

He popped.

I sing "You can't always get what you want" to my son once a day on average. Unfortunately, I don't think he has overwhelmingly positive associations with the song due to the context in which he hears it.

We were in the car last night and he started rocking out to Smells Like Teen Spirit on the radio. Cool thing in this case is that no one knows what he's saying or what that song is about anyway. So it's going on the CD. :)

Also going on it is Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline and Elton John's Tiny Dancer I think.

Roger Miller - anything but "My uncle used to love me, but she died" :)
Banana Boat Song - Harry Belafonte
