No way, not even close. Parker only flops on offense. Chris Paul does that and flops on defense, on dead balls, in transition. He just outflopped Manu Ginobili.

This is probably the best matchup of the entire playoffs. The wiley veteran, defensive-oriented, smarter Spurs versus the dynamic, offensive-oriented, more athletic Lakers.

Not to mention the best two coaches in the game.

I guarantee you Phil Jackson's smart enough not to double Duncan. He'll let Duncan beat the tar out of Gasol for 30-35 points, but none of the Spurs' outside shooters will see the light of day.

The Spurs need their big three to explode in this first game to answer that. The Lakers will not do that much doubling, so only the players who can create their own shots will get very good looks. The Spurs, luckily, have three of those players. If they can do enough damage to warrant some double-teaming, that's when the Spurs go to work.

On the other end, it's Kobe Kobe Kobe. As he goes, the Lakers go. I don't think Gasol can do that much against Duncan, and I bet Odom's going to struggle against Thomas. But once Kobe starts lighting up, everybody starts lighting up.

It's a pace game. If the half ends and the scores are something like 58-52, the Lakers are going to carry the game. If it's something lower like 42-40, the Spurs have them where they want them.

Spurs can't allow any easy buckets, no fast breaks. That's where they'll lose. Derek Fisher's got to play the series of his life shutting down Parker. And the benches needs to rise to the occasion because these starting fives are pretty well matched. The Lakers have more talent on the bench but the Spurs never have a "true" bench squad on the floor; one of their Big Three is always on the floor.

Great matchup either way, though. And that's coming from a Celtics fan.

I don't know if you are a Laker fan, Vanilla, but there are plenty of references on this thread pertaining to Ginobili and Parker flopping for fouls.

I find it rather hypocritical and comical that any Laker fan should criticize the Spurs for that behavior when they have Derek (flops like a fish out of water) Fisher on their team.

Sure it's ridiculous when players flop. I hate it, too. But don't be so self-righteous to pretend any Laker (particulary "the Fish") is above the same tactics.

(Again, this is direct to all Laker fans, not necessarily you, Vanilla)

No, I'm not a Laker fan. I do keep up with them and want them to do well because I'm a Bulls fan and want to see Phil Jackson do well. I will be torn if it's Lakers vs. Celtics in the Finals because of Pierce (GO KU!!!) but it should be a great series if both advance.

They'll be scary if they can keep the team together. Of course thats dependent on Buss being willing to pay the luxury tax. They need to resign Sasha and maybe Turiaf this summer. The only question I have is Odom playing SF when Bynum is back, Odom sucks at SF because he can't hit a jumpshot.

The Spurs offense is just too dependent on three point shooting. If you can keep Parker out of the lane and double Duncan intelligently, those shooters won't get wide open looks. Then the Spurs can't score at all.

And sometimes the Spurs get open looks and just miss.

Can you imagine if you gave Jordan Shaq and how many titles they would have won? Imagine how many titles Jordan would of had if he didn't try to play baseball? It's conceivable that he would have won 9 in a row.

I only see the max # of titles Kobe will win as six. He might get to just as many, but I just can't see him getting 7. Even if he gets six he's going to have to do some miracles stuff for me to put him above Jordan.

Jordan's career average is 30 points a game while shooting 50% from the field. Kobe won't ever dream of shooting 50% for his entire career yet alone one season.

I think they are an extremely tired team. No team in the NBA has played more games than the Spurs (playoffs included) over the past 5 years or so.

Although, Duncan,Park, Ginobli are still relatively young, the rest of the team is old.

Authorities in Gainesville charge Noah with possession of marijuana
(http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3411961)
Associated Press

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Authorities in Gainesville have charged Chicago Bulls forward and former Florida star Joakim Noah with possession of marijuana and having an open container of alcohol.

Gainesville police spokesman Sgt. Rick Roberts said Noah was arrested around 1:50 a.m. Sunday after an officer spotted him on a sidewalk holding a plastic cup containing an amber drink, a violation of city law. During a search at the station, officers found marijuana in his pocket.

Noah was released after signing a notice to appear before a judge -- standard procedure for such offenses. He could face up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine for the marijuana charge.

Noah led the Gators to back-to-back national championships before being picked ninth overall in last June's draft by the Bulls.

If you always have Parker, Ginobli, or Duncan on the floor if you're the Spurs, you don't need a guy off the bench who can shoulder the load.

Oh, I believe he paid. But the problem is that money isn't what drives highly successful people like Belicheck. It's respect from their peers and their place in history. I'm sure a $500K fine hurt, but the question about the legitimacy of their Super Bowl victories and his genius had to really dig at him. Getting away (if you can call it that) with a fine and draft pick quickly put the issue at rest (relatively). A suspension or really squeezing the Patriot organization even harder would've been bigger punishment and really would have told the world that what they did WAS a competitive advantage and had more people questioning Belicheck's 'greatness'.

That's because the NFL is king and THE sports league right now. As much as I like basketball, the last few years I don't watch the regular season and rarely any games in the playoffs other than Spurs games.

Ironically, Stern should actually be worried that it didn't get more press. On the one hand, he doesn't want his league to have bad publicity, but a scandal like this that doesn't get much pub indicates your league is second rate and no one really cares or isn't surprised, neither of which is a good thing.

Boston's offense is retarded...or something

the Pistons are guarding everyone except Rondo, which is very smart...

The Pistons have only increased their lead by three points from the end of the first half to now. If the C's get their act together in this final quarter they could steal another one away from the Palace.

Boston only needs about 15 more FTs to win this.

Doc Rivers is an idiot. He needs to tell his guys they have a chance to win this series in five games. It seems like they're happy with the split. That one of the reasons why the East is so terrible in comparison to the West. Another example...60 points? WTF? lol

Yep, I bet the idea to tell his team never occured to him.

I mean, only a genious(cps) could figure that out.

ROFL at Van Gundy saying the game is taking so long due to both teams spending an inordinate amount of time at the charity stripe.

I can accept home-court advantage, but when the Lakers are the aggressor, and the Spurs have shot 10 more free throws, something isn't right.

OMG. If the Lakers lose this game I cannot continue to watch the Spurs. First the Phoenix Game 1 and now this. I can't believe Bryant and Gasol made those mistakes down the stretch. I hate the Spurs.

Basileus777

They are never going to call that foul, sorry.

The refs NEVER call fouls in that situation. They wouldn't have called it for the Lakers either.

He was definitely trying to draw that. He should've stepped back and taken the shot when fisher was in the air.

If the Spurs had it there way they'd shoot free throws on every possession. I'm so sick of them taking stupid shots then crying to the refs after every play.

I don't know why Barry tried to dribble. If he goes up for the shot there, it's probably a foul. Instead he just dribbled into him, that's not gonna be called as often.

That game was horribly called. They put the Spurs back into the game in the 2nd quarter. I hate bitching about ref's but that shit was an ugly called game.

Anyways. 3-1.

Fisher's shot clearly hit the rim. Spurs would've had to have fouled, but instead they had to hope for a hail marry shot from Kobe.

Ginobili's 3 wasn't a 3, his foot was on the line.

No cause for Spurs fans to complain.

I thought that on both items as well but they didn't replay the Ginobli 3 at all curiously.

Also Duncan traveled hardcore in the 1st half

You honestly dont think Barry got fouled? Seemed pretty obvious. If it wasn't against LA I also wouldn' be bitchin as much. You know the NBA wants LA to win.
