# Some of you have referenced a report that the Vikings are now offering THREE draft picks to Kansas City for Allen: First- and third-round picks in 2008 AND their second-round choice in 2009. We admit it: We can’t totally debunk the report because we don’t trust any of our sources this time of year. But intuitively, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. In fact, you could make an argument that those three picks have the same value as the Vikings’ 2009 and 2010 first-round picks, which is what they would give up if they waited until after the draft to sign him to an offer sheet. (We arrived at that assertion by assigning the Vikings the No. 23 position in the 2009 and 2010 draft, a reasonable guesstimate, and using this trade chart to get values.)

# The most reliable information we’ve received is that the Vikings and Allen are close, if not in agreement, on a contract extension. The Vikings and Chiefs, however, are in a stalemate over the compensation. The Vikings are willing to send their 2008 first-round pick and the higher of their two third-rounders, while the Chiefs want the first plus the Vikings’ 2008 second-round pick.

I'd take their 1st and both 3rd's this year.

17/73/82

Value equals the 8th overall pick in this year's draft.

That's very intriguing.
That'd make for one hell of a Third Round.
Chilo Rachal, Eddie Royal, Reggie Smith...
After taking Gholston, Brian Brohm, and Carl Nicks?

I'd rather have that than a 1st/3rd this year and a 2nd next, personally.

6 picks in the first 82?

That would be huge.

I wouldn't make the trade before Friday night or Saturday morning. No reason to rush, from KC's perspective. Sweat as much out of them as you can, leak a few more "team xxx has shown interest" stories.

Don't you think that we could screw this up and drag it out too far?

What happens if Wilf and Co. realize that they're giving up way to much for Allen and back off?

For all the talk of the Buccaneers or others being interested, there hasn't been a single report of an offer.

IMO, if you are offered compensation you're happy with, you take it.

Plus, Tampa only has 5 picks. They don't have the ammunition to trump Minnesota's deal.

Don't you think that we could screw this up and drag it out too far?Nah. It's not at all unusual for these trades to drag out right up the start of the draft.

Minnesota's not getting cold feet, they're already committed. KC doesn't really have anything to lose by waiting. Worst that can happen is that we either keep Allen under the tag, or they sign him to a poison-pill contract next week and we get 2009/2010 firsts. Neither of which is really "bad".

I see where you're coming from, I'm just concerned that the novelty wears off at some point, and Wilf realizes that those 3 picks would make more of an impact than Allen would, and reconsiders.

If they back out, we're screwed, because the whole league knows he doesn't want to play in KC and will walk once he's no longer tagged.

Uh-oh, now this site is saying Scout.com is full of the bull poop!

http://blogs.twincities.com/Vikings/

I'm hearing that the Scout.com report is wrong. The Vikings have not offered the Kansas City Chiefs a one (17th overall), a three and a second in 2009. If that were the case, Chiefs president Carl Peterson would have personally flown Jared Allen to the Twin Cities.

I suspect the Chiefs are standing firm by their pursuit of a first and second this year, while the Vikings may be sticking to the first and third this year or conceding with a first this year and a second in 2009.

Deal Imminent?

- Received word from a source close to the "triangle of authority" that the Jared Allen deal is VERY close to being done, and that something COULD be announced as soon as Tuesday evening. No other details...

Not exactly the most informational update, but Vikings fans (cross your fingers) may be able to start wearing their Lesnar 69 jerseys again, with "Allen" taped across the back.

Not exactly the most informational update, but Vikings fans (cross your fingers) may be able to start wearing their Lesnar 69 jerseys again, with "Allen" taped across the back. That's because as soon as the Chiefs realized the Dolphins signed Jake Long, they knew they'd lost their only possible hope for success in 2008.

boy, I hope if they are really offering 3 picks..a 1st and 3rd in 08, and a 2nd in 09....I hope Carl jumps on that....

a 3rd pick increases the odds of getting a good player, regardless of the round...

3 "first day" picks is sweet if you ask me...
