Source: Jets agree to trade Robertson for one or two draft picks

Another veteran player has switched teams as the NFL draft inches closer.

The New York Jets have agreed to ship defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to the Denver Broncos, an NFL source close to the situation told ESPN.com. Terms of the deal were not known but it's believed to involve one or two draft picks in 2009.

The two teams have been talking about a trade since mid-March. Earlier this month, New York gave Denver permission to talk to Robertson about a new contract and the two sides had agreed on a restructured contract. Yet the Broncos and Jets continued to plow toward agreeing on a compensation package and came to an accord Thursday.

Robertson joins Defensive end Jared Allen and cornerback Pacman Jones as veterans who were traded this week for draft picks.

This is the second time the Jets have agreed to trade Robertson this offseason. In March, they had a deal in principle with Cincinnati for fourth- and fifth-round picks. But Robertson failed the Bengals' physical because of a knee issue. The Broncos gave Robertson a physical in March and the team was satisfied with his knees since he played all last season without any major problems.

Robertson will join second-year player Marcus Thomas as the likely starting defensive tackles in Denver as it retools its defensive line for the third time in four years. Robertson was made expendable by the Jets because he doesn't fit in the team's 3-4 scheme.

Had the Jets not been able to deal Robertson, he likely would have been cut in June. He was due a $3 million bonus in June and has salary cap number of about $11 million for this season. Robertson, 26, was the No. 4 overall draft pick in the 2003 draft out of Kentucky. He had 57 tackles for the Jets last season.

Great move since Courtney Brown, Gerrard Warren, and every other DL bust acquisition worked out so well.

They have cornered the market on trading for 1st round DL busts.

How bad is he? He had 57 tackles and 4 sacks last year. Doesn't seem too horrible. I don't really pay much attention to the jets though.

2009 picks so probably conditional. Lovely.

The Jets killed themselves with D-Rob. They traded 2 1st round picks to move up to #4 to overpay for a player who wasn't much good in a 4-3 system, and then was totally ineffective in the 3-4 that they wnated to use.

ROFL ROFL :fire:

Not a bad trade.

I'm hoping this gives the Jets more ammo to trade up and grab Ryan or McFadden.

Exactly what I was thinking. He hasn't lived up to his expectations, but is he really bad?

Not sure I wouldn't have liked to see the Chiefs trade a 5th for him, but then I don't know if he has an attitude/lazy issue or what.

Jets want to go to 3-4 and he's horribly ill-fitted for that system.

Think about this, if Robertson was any good, don't you think Herm would have been after a 26 year old tackle he was familiar with?

If he was Dick Vermiel, yeah.

But I haven't seen TOO many pro-Jets player tendencies.

You're prolly right though.

Nothing like blowing draft picks on a guy who was almost certain to be turned loose anyway.

True. I can think of one down in TB who was picked very highly, who they could get for the same deal.

Oh wait.... :banghead: :p

How does Shanahan keep his job? Really the most overrated coach in the league other than Jon Gruden.
