The first person who suggests Jamaal Charles should unseat Larry Johnson as our starting running back loses a testicle.

You have been warned.

I don't think Charles will ever be a starter, he's a great #2 though because of his elite speed and ability to make big plays.

I'd never want him to touch the ball more than 15 times in a game though.

3rd down and change of pace back...hopefully albert and big barry can help LJ get back to form.

Carl Nicks could mean more to this team than LJ.

He's the new Bennett. Work on the fumbling, and get them both on the field at the same time a few downs a game.

I like having 3 capable backs. You really need RB depth, and it's nice to have a home run hitter.

I dunno about that, but he looks pretty damned good.

Can he return kicks and punts?

Mecca
04-27-2008, 05:20 PM
I think he's done kickoffs, I don't believe he's ever done punts though, similar to Felix Jones in that right.

KcMizzou
04-27-2008, 05:20 PM
Can he return kicks and punts?Probably, but we did get this guy too...

Pick Analysis:Robinson is the best return man in the country out of Utah State. The competition isn't great in the WAC and it could be tough for him to adjust to the pro game. Still, he's very good at what he does and is an excellent special teamer.

Unseat Kolby, you mean.

Pestilence
04-27-2008, 05:21 PM
Well I like how with him we have an explosive 3rd down back who can take it to the house...but he can also help out with special teams duties.

How is he in the catching department?

Kolby is going to be the established starter after TC. Charles will be the 3rd down back and LJ will go in when Kolby and Charles are too tired from scoring touchdowns.

upside is reggie bush - lots of speed and receiving ability could make him a toy for the offense but will never be a 20-25 carry guy

I like Kobe Smith, but ut was clear we didn't have anything after him last year. I'm glad we got a back.

I just had a thought. I wonder if the pick could be an indication that they're unsure about Larry's recovery. Fallback plan if Larry's done and Kolby's the fulltime starter.

Probably not, I think he was clearly BPA, but it does make me wonder.

Mecca
04-27-2008, 05:25 PM
Kolby Smith is better suited as your 3rd RB, he can come in and take carries but he has experience at FB and plays special teams his versatility makes him better as the 3.

They might be looking to deal LJ next year or in 2010. That huge contract looks pretty foolish now.

While I blame Carl completely for that, I guess it's only fair to note that he was our fourth-string running back and the first three all went down to injury or were traded. Nonetheless, it should cost Carl his job.

Agreed. I wanted Lorenzo Booker last year to fill this role. I think Charles brings a lot of the same tools to the table with less question marks.

The biggest thing this offense needed was game breaking speed. I wanted DeSean Jackson, but I can understand that Flowers was too good to pass up. I love the Charles pick because it gives us that dynamic - a guy that is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. If we get really lucky maybe Franklin can give us a little of that too.

Sorry...lol

Now that we've got him, I'm hoping for big things.I understand the hands issue, but I think people comparing Franklin to Samie Parker are about as far off-base as you can get. Parker's a 5'11, 185 pound track guy in pads who absolutely hates contact, if four years of play here is any indication. Whereas Franklin's a 6'1, 205 guy who doesn't shy away from physical play, and just happens to have sub-4.4 speed. Does he need to work on his concentration, and can you argue that he underachieved when you consider his attributes? Clearly. But he's also shown he's a football player, and not just a finesse player with speed.

Wouldn't shock me at all for him to be a solid #2, and sooner rather than later.

You're smokin' crack.

The Chiefs scored a league-low last year.

They're not going to score two TD's against the Patriots, unless they decide to let the fans at Foxboro play against the Chiefs.

Hell, it could be 73-0 at halftime.

Jamaal won't unseat Larry.

However, if Larry continues to show a lack of heart, an inability to block, and repeat last years "keep my head down and do my best Greg Hill impression", Kolby Smith just might.

That would be a shame...it would ruin any potential trade value LJ has.

i dont understand why they have to draft a "just in case" running back every year, when there are clearly much more pressing needs on the team.

Kolby is not a speed back. Charles is. World-Class speed, and a contributer to our abysmal return game.

With LJ's injury and unwillingness to focus on developing his blocking and receiving skills, common sense dictates looking for a third RB. We got outstanding value for the position we picked him.

You might be happier if we had reached on an inferior talent at a position of need. Then we might have ended up with the O Line equivalent of Junior Siavii. Woohoo!

I won't argue the blocking point with you. But LJ made a concerted effort last offseason to improve his receiving skills and it paid off. He had very good hands last year and only dropped a couple balls. Tired of Larry getting slammed unfairly over it.

I didn't see it, but I freely admit my views may be colored by my contempt for someone with the raw talent to be Epic, but who (IMO) appears to lack the heart to continue developing to that level after signing a fat contract.

I hope he proves me as wrong as I was about Herm's ability to put together a decent draft.
