How are the Seahawks, Vikings, and Jags signing this many guys so fast? Especially the Good ones.

I'd think that not only the players, but their agents knowing that an UDFA's best chance to play would be in K.C., would land a lot of good guys right here.

Ricky Santos
Height: 6-03/8 | Weight: 209 | 40-Time: 5.00

Official Bio

Strengths:
Extremely productive...Great leadership abilities..Intense and competitive and is a true gamer...Good touch and timing...Pretty accurate...Quick delivery...Has decent mobility and can make plays with his feet...Is very tough...Has a lot of experience.

Weaknesses:
Did not play against top competition...Lacks the ideal size that you look for...Does not have a very strong arm...Can be reckless at times...Makes iffy decisions when under duress...Worked from the shotgun and has to adjust to a pro style offense.

Notes:
A four-year starter...In 2006 he won the Walter Payton Award as the top player in I-AA football...His cousin, Bobby Santos, races in the NASCAR Busch Series...Prolific college player who was dominant at his level but lacks the physical tools you look for in a NFL signal caller...Stats and intangibles could get him in somebody's camp.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed former Ohio running back Kalvin McRae as an undrafted college free agent yesterday, his mother Cheral Hope said.

The Chiefs called him just minutes after the draft ended and signed him to a contract.

McRae, who is the Bobcat’s all-time leading rusher with 4,398 yards rushing, will report to Kansas City on Thursday for the Chief’s rookie mini camp.

The offseason roster cap is 80. I count 71 players on the team post-draft. If we sign the 12 guys listed here, 3 have to go. Some of these UDFA guys may be invited to try-out rather than signed, which would cut down on the players we need to let go.

Still, I expect Wesley will be cut sooner rather than later.

KU defensive tackle to try out with Chiefs
By J. BRADY MCCOLOUGH
The Kansas City Star

LAWRENCE | Kansas defensive tackle James McClinton will try out with the Chiefs this weekend at their rookie minicamp.

“I’m going there looking for a contract, and we’re going to get it,” said McClinton, who was not selected in last weekend’s NFL Draft. “I’m trusting God.”

McClinton was the Big 12 defensive lineman of the year and a second-team All-American last year for the Jayhawks.

I was hoping for Pedro Sosa I think he can play......

Also that Safety on Rutgers, he's gonna be an awesome pro Courtney Greene.

Sosa got picked up by the Vikings. If he's recovered from his injury he could make their roster. He doesn't have good size, but he's got good footwork, can pass block, and can backup multiple positions.

The Colts picked up Eric Foster too. He was a great college player, but I think he's too small to do anything in the pros. Although maybe he can work as a situational pass rusher in the tampa 2.

Girault probably doesn't make our roster unless he proves he can play special teams or we trade Wesley. But he is kind of a Herm guy, hard working and a good leader.

And I agree with you on Greene, I would love the Chiefs to draft him next year.

6th overall pick in the CFL draft, gotta be worth a look. Has good size.

Should incude that he's white, which everyone seems to think makes him Brandon stokely or Wes Welker.

VICTORY

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=199850

It happened so quickly because the Chiefs were very aggressive in pursuing Luke Swan after the draft, Brady said.

"We had a couple different teams calling, but really no hard offers," Brady said. "But the Chiefs came out of the box and blew us away."

Brady said he fielded four calls in about six minutes from Chiefs vice president of player personnel Bill Kuharich. Each time, Brady said, the Chiefs sweetened the pot.

And while the money was nice -- Brady declined to say exactly how much Swan signed for, saying only it was 'pretty well above' the undrafted free agent average of $4,000 -- the Chiefs' interest and their personnel situation made Kansas City the right fit for Swan.

"(Kuharich) told me, 'Cliff, I know this kid. I've seen him. He can be our Wes Welker,'" Brady said."

Chug every time the writer uses "Brady said". Sounds like they're pretty high on this guy, though.

This might pan out to be the steal of this year’s draft. Here's why:

Girault was the man calling the shots in the 2nd ranked secondary in the nation this year.

Girault put up outstanding pro day numbers, easily top 5.

http://www.mysportspage.com/news/index.html?article_id=158443&category_id=2728

Girault is a four year starter that hits like a truck and covers well. Shiano said "Ron Girault is a safety who can cover like a corner, hits like a linebacker and has the smarts of a coach" (he could have gone Ivy League out of high school).

He was a heck of a running back in high school, leading st. Joes to 4 straight state championships.

If not for his ankle sprain, most experts’ say Girault would have went on day one of the draft.

http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080423/SPORTS02/80423100/1002/SPORTS

I think the Chiefs really came off with this signing. Girault will certainly be the tenacious ball hawk, game changing presence we need in our secondary.

Go Chiefs!

Deal or no deal? It's a quick decision for NFL free agents
Jim Polzin — 4/30/2008 6:17 am

Luke Swan had already agreed in principle to a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday evening when he fielded a call on his cell phone from the New York Jets.

The former University of Wisconsin wide receiver wasn't quite sure what to tell the Jets' representatives -- Swan had yet to sign the deal with the Chiefs -- so he politely referred them to his Chicago-based agent, Cliff Brady.

"You know what," Swan told a reporter who had been waiting on the other line, "maybe you should call me back later so we can verify the facts."

Swan did end up signing with the Chiefs on Sunday night, ending a chaotic day that was equal parts exhilarating and stressful for himself and his agent.

Now picture this: There were hundreds of players like Swan trying to secure a spot with one of the 32 teams in the National Football League on Sunday. The process started well before the second day of the draft had ended and continued late into the night.

Peter Schaffer, the Denver-based agent for former UW punter Ken DeBauche, who signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent, says the system is anything but ideal.

"I've been in this business now for 20 years," said Schaffer, who also represents former UW offensive lineman Joe Thomas, "and I've been saying for 19 of them -- because the first year I didn't know any better -- that there has to be a better way.

"I take what I do very serious. I take my obligation to my clients very serious and you have to make a decision -- whether it's two teams, 10 teams, 20 teams -- on what are the best chances for them to succeed in their profession. And we sometimes have five minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes to make that call."

In one case Sunday, Schaffer fielded a call from a team that offered one of his clients a $12,000 signing bonus. (Deals for undrafted players generally range from $1,000 to $20,000.) Schaffer called the player, who agreed to the deal, but the offer had been pulled in the four minutes it took Schaffer to call the team back.

Other times, Schaffer's assistants and secretaries were taking offers from teams because he was already on the line with another team.

Said Schaffer, who saw seven of his clients get drafted Sunday, "It's a very stressful, hectic few hours."

He didn't need to tell that to Brady, who began working the phones fervently on Swan's behalf at the start the sixth round Sunday. Chicago and Cincinnati indicated they were very interested in Swan, but then both drafted other wide receivers -- the Bears took Arkansas' Marcus Monk; the Bengals took Louisville's Mario Urrutia -- with compensatory selections late in the seventh round.

Swan, who watched the draft with about a dozen friends and family members at his Madison apartment, was disappointed when he wasn't among the 252 players selected. On the flip side, the advantage to being a free agent was that he could choose from what he felt was the best situation among the handful of teams that offered him a contract.

"But I'm not going to lie to you -- everybody wants to be drafted, every agent wants their client drafted, even if it's the last pick of the draft. But you play the cards you're dealt," Brady said.

"We were working the phones pretty hard that sixth and seventh rounds for Luke. If it wasn't going to happen, it wasn't certainly because of a lack of effort. All of a sudden, you get down to those last 10 picks of the seventh, then you really start thinking about, 'Well, shoot, we can kind of pick where we want to go.' "

Ironically, the Chiefs weren't among the four teams which had shown the most interest in Swan, whose draft status took a hit when he sustained a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the last half of his senior season at UW.

But, according to Brady, "the Chiefs just came on like gangbusters." Generally, scouts deal with undrafted free agents, but it was Kansas City's vice president of player personnel, Bill Kuherich, who called Brady about Swan on Sunday.
"We talked four times in about six minutes," Brady said. "Every time, the dollar amount kept going up. Not that you just jump on the dollars, but it shows they have interest."
DeBauche, meanwhile, chose the Packers over a handful of other offers. It seems like an easy decision in theory -- DeBauche grew up in Suamico, a suburb of Green Bay -- until you consider that he wasn't given very long to think about it.

Schaffer believes he has a solution to the flawed system.

"I think there has to be an absolute moratorium for 24 hours where no deals can be done," Schaffer said. "You can talk, you can communicate, teams can line 'em up, but no deal can be done.

"You're talking about a young man's career at stake here. It's certainly worth (taking) 24 hours. These young men deserve that."

I disagree with you on a few things:

1) Foster is probably undersized for his position, but as we can see with guys like Freeny, size is not everything. Foster's strength and motor makes up for his size. Plus he fits perfect with the Colts scheme. He should be OK.

2) Your dead wrong about Girault's chances. You’re absolutely correct about him being a Herm kind of guy. Hard working, hard hitting, instincts and leadership. Plus Girault and Herm have similar story lines. But of all the UDFA we selected thus far, Girault has by far the most experince and by far the best numbers:

S Ron Girault (5-10, 204) appeared in 45 games (40 starts) at Rutgers, recording 271 tackles (160 solo), 1.5 sacks (-11.0 yards), nine tackles for loss, 10 INTs for 204 yards, seven passes defensed, four fumble recoveries and four forced fumbles. He also blocked two kicks on special teams. The Spring Valley, New York native was an all-state performer at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey.

Most expert say Girault could have easily been drafted. I've read on other team forums people (New Yorkers primarily) talk very highly about this kid. Look at the fact: he was the "QB" of the number two ranked pass defense in the country last year. The past three years Rutgers secondary was ranked in the top 10 with him calling the shots. Shiano trust him to make checks and to get them lined up correctly. When Girault went down for four games last year, the secondary took a real hit.

Lastly, Yes Greene will be a heck of a Pro. And I hope we draft him next year too, because He and Girault are a dynamic duo (GMEN). They are great friends on and off the field. They both bring the wood, and they both have tremendous ability. But you have to take there "positions" in mind. When Ron came in as a true freshman, He put up monsterous numbers, even though he didn’t start till a few games into the season. That's because he was the free safety and Jarvis Johnson was the Strong. As a free safety, you get to run wild and be in on more plays.

Well Girault soon proved to Shiano that he had the smarts to play Strong, plus Greene came in that following year proving he can play right away. That move was key in RU's success. As a Strong, you have more responsibility and must play a more reserved role. The Strong is usually the last line of defense, so you can't just go chasing the ball all the time. You have to play honest. Girault was good at this. Knowing when to bring the lumber and knowing when to fall back.

Lastly, listen to what Greene say's. He attributes all that he knows and his success to Girault grooming him. Not to say he wouldn’t be good without Girault, but he acknowledged that he probably would not be where he is today without Girault. And vice versa. By the way, of all the safeties in this year’s draft class, Girault may have among the best pro day numbers, which means he's only getting better and that he may suprise many people. Let's wait and see.

That all for now...:spock:

Well, I think they did find a couple of hidden gems in Cox and Leggett. Barth has been a good kicker with the exception of last week, and Lokey is on the active roster, though that is probably more due to attrition. Still, The odds are against undrafted free agents making it this far. There are people in our scouting department who did very well last year. I wouldn't mind seeing some of them retained by the new GM.
