I know... perhaps this may seem as hypocrisy to some, but for many of us growing up we rooted for the Cards and Chiefs.

And talk to DaFace if you want to argue about the icon I liked the bird over the letters.

That's how it was for me. St. Louis didn't have a football team when I was growing up so I went west and found the Chiefs.

I'm fine with changing the icon if people prefer the bird. As for adding it in general, it was by request. There are enough Cards fans around here to warrant it, I'd think. Sorry for you Royals fans who think it's blasphemous. :D

If I can figure out how to let people IGNORE threads by prefix, we'll be all set.

There are not many games as good as those. It really is tough to compare it to any other baseball rivalry.

The Royals games will get a better feel when Dayton starts to get our team together.

After moving to KC, I started to follow the Royals and even cheer for them (except vs the birds). The "rivalry" between the two clubs and hatred just does not seem to make any sense to me.

He'll go to extended spring training, which will give him a few more weeks against minor leaguers.

...Then he'll come up to the show and get his ass handed to him a few times while our 2nd best pitcher this season will get bumped to the bullpen (Wellemeyer).

Mulder's done, just completely shot. Good thing Dan and Al so steadily remind me how good a golfer he is, because that's about all Mulder has left in front of him.

I watched Mulder crater in the 2005 NLCS and close down Busch Stadium in person. I've hated that no sack having sissy ever since. I'm glad he's getting shelled in the minor leagues just because it saves us from ourselves. Mozeliak will be tempted to use him if he's even the slightest bit effective at AAA.

His response: "Whatever, I just made a few mistakes and they hit every one of them"....blah blah blah, platitude about how good his arm feels, blah, blah, stuff was sharp, blah.

I know the feeling but I really WANT him to do well. He has/had such amazing talent that if he was 90% of what he was he would be a solid #2.

As far as what the management is doing:

They NEED Mulder to improve to try and salvage something out of the trade and try to get something for Mulder in future trades. They gambled for that by resigning him in the offseason.

I also think they will send Wellemeyer to the pen, but that does not bother me too much. I have not been overly impressed with him. Although, Piniero could go there as well IMO

I also think they will send Wellemeyer to the pen, but that does not bother me too much. I have not been overly impressed with him.

What hasn't impressed you?

I did not like Wellemeyer as a starter last year, but I really like what I've seen from him this year. He's working consistently at 93, giving him the best power stuff on the club. He's actually consistently throwing strikes and spotting in the strike zone. He's developed a downright nasty slider and his changeup is developing nicely. For the stat crowd, his peripherals have all the looks of a guy that can keep this up.

He's looking more and more to fit the profile of your classic power pitcher. Better still, he has very few miles on a relatively young arm still, so there's reason to believe he has a lot of tread left and could be counted on for 200+ innings.

I'll be honest, outside of Wainwright, I think Wellemeyer is more likely to be a front of the rotation pitcher than anyone else on our club. He's pretty much penned into my 2009 rotation, which should allow us to put McClellan in the closer's role (I'm not having a rookie as my closer in '09).

Wellemeyer could be there in '09, but I just don't like him because of his pitch counts. He does not get deep into games it seems. We will see more as the season progresses. I am skeptical because of his past.

Izzy can't pitch tonight...at least he shouldn't.

I'd like to see Franklin in the 8th and McClellan in the 9th to lock it down. Izzy's age has caught up to him. He can still be effective, but not without more rest than he's had in years past.

This club needs to find who it's 'winning streak' closer's gonna be, because we can't expect 70 innings out of the Izzy man this year.

If Haren wins a Cy and Barton wins a batting title, we may be approaching Carlton for Wise, but not before then.
Haren was at best inconsistent in his time with the Cardinals. Yes, we all saw the upside but until Haren wins a Cy Young its not a Babe Ruth level of a bad trade.

I agree on Izzy.

As for tonight send out Looper for another inning and hope we can get through it. Then you can send out whoever you want in the 9th with a 4 run lead.

Wellemeyer could be there in '09, but I just don't like him because of his pitch counts. He does not get deep into games it seems. We will see more as the season progresses. I am skeptical because of his past.

I personally like Lohse. He has pitched well and although recently struggled was fairly consistent,

He's going 6 per right now.

35 starts gets you 210 IP at that rate, which would've been good for 9th in the NL last season.

I think he's still trying to shake the perception of him from last year (and KC). Wellemeyer has made HUGE strides as a starter this season. At his age and relatively low mileage, there's no reason to believe he can't shoulder a pretty heavy load for us.

That throw was unreal. Not often you can one up that first throw he made in the same game.

The rear angle view from the left-centerfield gap shows just how incredible that throw us. The freakin' thing had just started falling when it got to 3b. The play was incredible enough that the umpire didn't have the heart to make the right call...dude looked pretty safe to me.

With a 4 run lead, you don't risk dry humping the reliever.

If a guy gets on, you warm someone. If another gets on, you throw over a few times and bring in the reliever.

Not disagreeing, but we are talking about Tony LaRussa here. I thought he would bring in someone because they "needed some work"

Yep, we were. 17 new players on the roster. Both our best pitchers unavailable until at least the all star break.

But we have found some good starting pitching, the bullpens been good. The new guys are hitting the ball solid. They are for real. Whether they win anything this year is still to be decided but the rebuilding is over.

King Carl take notice....

2006 - Win a World Championship

2007- Don't sign the older vets. Let high priced FA's go. Play the new guys and take your lumps.

2008 - Start contending again.

To be completely fair, you're a year off.

In 2007 we extended Edmonds, and Speizio, signed AK to a questionable contract and Wells to an awful one, played Juan E until his career was ended by an errant line drive, picked up guys like Mike Maroth to patch holes, etc...

2007 was a Carl Peterson season, a completely wasted abortion of a year.

2008 has some promise, but it's still a rebuild. It's still something of a house of cards as there are a bunch of quesionmarks and any hiccup could bring it tumbling down. However, this team will be reloaded and ready to win another championship in 2009. We're clearing about $42 million off the books and only losing Izzy and Looper as true contributors (sounds like Furcal money to me...).

The Cubs have had a superior lineup to the Cardinals for several years now, yet haven't competed for shit.

What makes you think that's going to change now?

Cubs fans can keep thinking our young, inexperienced lineup is going to implode any day now, and us Cardinal fans will keep enjoying taking 2 out of 3 games each series we play Chicago.

I watched their $100 million man Soriano stink it up in person. They have a top 5 payroll year after year and what do they have to show for it?

We don't have Royals level of a payroll but we arn't the Yankess/Cubs either. We have overpaid for FA's but we have got more bargains than busts and our farm system has produced some talent for the major league club.
