Zappos Pays Its Employees to Quit
Wed, 05/21/2008 - 2:49pm by SavvySugar 854,267 Views - 53 comments

Here I thought Zappos was just the best accomplice to indecisive shoe junkies like myself, with its generous and fast free shipping and free return policies, but it turns out there's more to this online shoe company than meets the eye. Zappos is obsessed with customer service and understands that there are several other sources online for customers to get their shoe fixes.

After an intensive four-week training period that compensates new employees with their full salary, the company presents the freshly trained group with something called The Offer: “If you quit today, we will pay you for the amount of time you’ve worked, plus we will offer you a $1,000 bonus.” Zappos tests the commitment of its employees from the get-go, because it realizes the importance of a strong call-center team when that's the only customer service experience an online customer will get. Makes perfectly good business sense to me!

I've never seen anything like this before. I hope it works out for them. Makes you wonder then if the job is really worth it after the 4 weeks are up.

I wonder how many times they will let you take the training program

Do they pay their customer service reps a decent wage? If they're paid $7/hr they should take the $1000 and run. They'd have a month's worth of wages to find a better paying job.

If they are so concerned about holding onto employees (which seems to be the point), I doubt they pay dog-sh!t.

Not to mention a nice reference on their resume.

"I took the money and ran for a better job". Yeah, good luck with that.

I'm guessing the $1000 buys a whole lot more quality publicity than a SuperBowl commercial so it's probably more about the pub and less about the employees. In any case, pure genius. Well done Zappos.

I wonder if this strategy would work here? I mean, instead of paying $50 to be part of an extra-special forum, we could just pay $50 to certain posters to go away.

Sorry, Mr. Phobia. I spent it on V8 juice and hookers.

Hookers love V8. Must be all the potassium.

I wonder if they've been getting more resume's than they know what to do with now.

I'd take it and leave.......call center jobs are everywhere and more than likely they didn't get paid much to begin with unless it was a supervisor job or something

they are a good site. Free shipping both ways last I knew, so you can make sure you get a good fit.

Also check out Endless.com and Shoebuy.com.

I'm a shoeaholic but I usually buy them deeply discounted so I find Zappos to be expensive as I usually find the same shoes on Amazon.com or Endless for less. Zappos used to have a wonderful price match policy but too many people from the deal sites would post deals and then have Zappos match them so they stopped doing it.

Amazon is the best bet, IMO. Recently, I found a pair of shoes on Amazon that was still selling for $123 MORE at Nordstrom's. The same damn shoe.

Yeah....I've ordered 5-6 pairs of shoes from them and have never had a problem. The only issue they sometimes have is that they run out of sizes.

ya I remember hearing about that in some class in school a few years ago. I guess that's their way of finding the committed employees or something
