Me and my relatives are fighting over BBQ restaurants. It comes down to a split of Jax Stax or Bryants.

Which is better? I say Stax. I love that fugg'in joint.

When did you go to KC Masterpiece? I believe the only one left open made some big changes last year or so.

AH, found what I was looking for... here is an article about the change.. can't tell if they have made much progress yet...

http://www.kansascity.com/business/story/606764.html

Here are the relevant parts about KC Masterpiece...

that restaurant was sold to Hurst Restaurant Group in early 2006.

...

McPeake is culinary and concept director for Hurst, and Wilcox is operations director. In the last few weeks McPeake has worked with the staff to revamp the KC Masterpiece menu.
“We’re getting back to authentic pit barbecue. The smokers are rebuilt, and we are doing 100 percent of our meats in the smokers,” McPeake said. “And I updated the food flavors and updated the menu with 50 some items.”

...

McPeake, a professional chef for 30 years, has a strong following from teaching barbecue and grilling classes at the Culinary Center of Kansas City in downtown Overland Park and at the Smoke N Fire store in Overland Park.

I think they are going for a Jack Stack type of restaurant as opposed to an Eat It and Beat It style

Anyone eaten there in the last few weeks?

Snead's BBQ is still my favorite. Best burnt ends I've ever had. Well worth the drive, IMO.

Bryants is my choice of eateries to have BBQ at first because I love their pork and sauce..

Smokehouse is bland imo.. Really cannot put my finger on it, only like their turkey there..

Gates is good depending on the cook..

Rib Crib is good for what you get and pay for.. All you can Tuesdays rocked.. But they went out of business up north..

Jack Stack is overrated for money and taste..

the others I have not tried..

If you want some really good BBQ get a tasting pass or what ever they are called for the American Royal BBQ or know somebody that cooks out there and eat around.. Amazing food..

LOL, we went there last summer. We had a pretty good sized group of people and when they started to hand us the bread we just told them to keep it because we wouldn't eat it...they looked at us like we were turning away MONEY or something! FWIW, I really like Gates' style of BBQ...a bit too spicy for the rest of my family though. Im not from the KC area but we will be visiting in a couple of weeks, where are some of these places located? thanks.

He likes Bryant's better.

Yes, they do have one at Legends.

Famous Daves is also out there.

KC Masterpiece are located off of Metcalf.

Smokehouse has 3 locations. Indepedence(by the mall) Gladstone(N. Oak trafficway) and Zona Rosa.

Gates is located in the dumpster out back.

Zarda is Gates leftovers.

Bandanas is off of Shawnee Mission Prkwy.(not worth the stop IMO)

Jack Stax is off of Metcalf but I think there is another off of N. Oak also but someone else will need to confirm.

Oklahoma Joe's is located in a gas station.

Ditto. I eat lunch there (Olathe store) and always go for the pulled pork. I'm always tempted by the special, or another dish, but it's just too damn good. The drawback is that if you don't get there early there's a loooooong line.

Zarda has the best beans and best turkey sandwich of any joint. Wyandotte BBQ is also very good. I ate at Bandanas in ST. Joe, it was OK. They have a really good KC style sauce. High May I Help You is decent, I just hate the atmosphere.

But nothing can really compare to the Crown Prime Beef Short Ribs at Fiorellas. IMO, that's as good as it gets. Their Koby beef is a very close second. Fiorellas original location is in Martin City at 135th & Holmes Road.

In fairness, Bandanas is located where Smokehouse used to be and they cannot live up to how good Smokehouse is. They are better than the Smokey Pelican (BBQ fish :Lin:) that occupied that location for a very short time.

That said, I never intend to eat at Bandanas again. Waste of money IMO.

If you listen to my post then you will be forever enlightened.

My 3 favorite places, for different reasons, are as follows:

Oklahoma Joe's
LC's
Woodyard

You cannot go wrong with any of those three. You can go wrong, however, with many of the places suggested previously in this thread.

So, I'd say don't choose either Bryant's or Jack Stack. For the record, I used to really like both of those places. They have gone downhill in quality in the past year and a half, though. I probably need to go back to each and see if things have improved.
