This is the thread to let everyone know your Blu-Ray Disc collection and to also let people know of any kind of Blu-Ray Deals you run across.

Blu-Ray looks absolutely stunning, and it is the future for Movies.

The thread title should include a brief description...

Blu-Ray is 1080p which is the highest HiDef you can buy and is not in broadcasting yet but will soon be. It's only available in your hidef tvs and in movies, [ps3] etc you buy.

I'll start with my collection and my wants

I own

1. Spiderman 3 (came with my 40 GB PS3)
2. 3:10 to Yuma
3. Hitman
4. No Country for Old Men
5. Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem
6. The Punisher

1. Came w/ PS3, looks great, I wouldn't have bought it on its own.
2. Great scenery, Great Movie, worth the money
3. Really fun movie with some visually stunning scenes
4. Great Movie again, I was so enthralled by the plot that I didn't even stop and look at how crisp and clear it was, but I'm sure the desert scenes were beautiful.
5. I have yet to watch this movie, I will get around to it.
6. I just bought The Punisher tonight. It was $15 and I wanted to check out the quality of a pre-blu-ray format movie.

Heres some that I want

1. Lost Season 3
2. Planet Earth
3. I am Legend
4. Independence Day
5. V for Vendetta
6. Cloverfield (Not out til Mid-June)

Plus many others.

I've got a blu-ray burner if any of you guys want me to burn you something in HD. I've got the KU-UNC KU-Memphis games on Blu-ray. I would offer to burn Chiefs games throughout the season but it doesn't seem likely that there will be many you would want to keep...

5. Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem
6. The Punisher

I've only got four blu-ray DVDs so far. I bought a couple right off the bat, but so far there's not much of a selection, and most of what's out there I either already own or have no interest in. As the selection increases, I'll probably re-buy A HANDFUL of movies I already own, but not many.

Current blu-rays:

Fifth Element
Road Warrior
Troy Directors Cut (waste of time and money-theatrical version is vastly better)
Purple Rain

Blu Ray/HI DEF DVDS OWN!

www.hidefdigest.com for bluray reviews, such as video quality etc, which are important. As well as this link for rankings of movie quality (picture wise) http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=858316 Some movies look better than others etc, due to how they are shot/mastering from what I hear. No matter what they always look better than regular/upconverted dvds. Bookmark that for future bluray purchases. I find that amazon.com has the cheapest BR movies imo. Usually a $7-12 difference from Best Buy etc...

I prefer Netflix to rent most of my BR movies :)

I rent blu-rays from netflix, then make an image of them with ImgBurn and keep them on the hard drives of my HTPC. I have 2 terabytes of storage with about half of it full of blu-rays and a few HDDVD's.

Heres some of my titles:

Independence Day
Terminator 2 and 3
The Matrix Trilogy (HDDVD)
House of Flying Daggers
The Devil's Rejects
Planet Earth Series
Cast Away
The Patriot
Master and Commander
300
Apocalypto
The new Rambo (downloaded it)
Goodfellas
Full Metal Jacket
American Psycho
House of 1000 Corpses
The Departed
I Am Legend
28 Days Later
28 Weeks Later
Bad Santa
The Italian Job
Stir of Echoes
Underworld
Babel
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Gone in 60 Seconds
I, Robot
Lord of War
Pearl Harbor
The Transporter
Live Free Or Die Hard
Carlito's Way (HDDVD)
War

I could have a lot more but I dont think comedies are worth the hard drive space...comedies in standard def are just fine imo.

PS - If anyone is thinking about it, please spare me your lectures on copywrite infringement, I dont give a shit.

Question: My DVD player upconverts to 1080p. Why should I go Blu-Ray?

Question: My DVD player upconverts to 1080p. Why should I go Blu-Ray?
Because Blu-Ray is actual 1080p, not upconverted...upconverted dvd's dont come close to a well mastered 1080p blu-ray.

Buck
05-25-2008, 02:42 PM
I would compare and Upconverted DVD to hitting the "HD Zoom" Button on your remote control.

All it does is stretch the picture to fit the screen. Its not really possible to make the quality of the picture better.

Yes.

There are now 1080 scan lines per frame as opposed to the standard 480, but each scan line's quality has been degraded.

TinyEvel

I have

Superman I (the 1970's one with Chris Reeve)
The First Harry Potter film
George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1977) -- not sure that BR maximizes this film look, but I saw this at BB right after I got my PS3 and had to have it since this is the film that gave me monthly zombie nightmares for 4 years. I still have them a couple times a year.

Nobody said it makes it HiDef. It DOES make it look better though. I definitely see a difference on my upconvert player. But to say it only stretches it to fit your screen is a very uninformed statement.

PS, shouldn't this just be in the PS3 thread? I mean, really.

You have to consider the source material. That is the difference. Yes, an upconverting DVD player can do 1080p, which a decent player will show a visible difference.

But, you are dealing with a dual layer 7.4 Gigabyte disk for standard def DVD. Blu-Ray movies have a capacity of 50GB's. The source file is much larger and better quality.

The difference is night and day and worth every penny IMO.

You have got a good list going there. Ratatouille is a great movie, one of the best quality BR's out right now. If you like that you also might like Cars, it looks incredible. Really just about all the animated movies look outstanding, The Wild, Chicken Little, Open Season, etc.

If you like these movies I would recommend the following. All three of the Pirates of the Carribean disks are demo quality. Apocolypto and Black Hawk Down are also reference quality.

What is the difference between demo quality and reference quality?

The difference is basically nothing, just different word usage.

I know the animated movies look great, but...its animation. I could care less how crisp and clear my artificial man-made images look when I could be watching a real movie with real people and environments in HD. Not that I pay for them anyways, but the animated movies arent worth a spot in my Netflix queue nor the 30-40GB+ on my hard drives. Upconverted from dvd is more than adequate imo.

I'm not trying to be difficult, I just want to understand. If the resolution is the same...

no matter how good of an upconverting DVD player you have, the DVD you have is recorded at 480p. period. 480 lines of resolution is the max provided by standard definition dvds.

i'm wondering if you mean that your DVD player will upconvert to 1080i, not 1080p? the difference between 1080i and 1080p is easy. 1080p(p stands for progressive scan) is the holy grail of HD, 1920 x 1080 pixels, assuming that the source material is recorded for that high quality format. 1080 lines are sent to the screen per single pass. 1080i(i stands for interlaced) is also 1920 x 1080 pixels, but the content is Interlaced, meaning that the odd numbers of screen resolution will pass first, then the even will pass. upconverting DVD players will take the 480p signal and use the interlacing method to produce a 1080i video. it will look better than on a standard DVD player, but still not even close to true HD content.

i have heard of newer players saying that they can upconvert to 1080p; i just can't conceive how it will magically "create" more detail in a standard definition DVD

Okay, so I just bought a PS3. I rented a blu-ray movie and I couldn't get my receiver to recognize the audio as dolby digital or DTS (even though my receiver handles both). I have the PS3 hooked up to my receiver via the optical cable. The thing is, when I play an old DVD in the PS3, the audio is recognized/handled correctly. Anyone else had this problem?

Make sure the discs you are trying have a DTS audio track endcoded on the discs. Alot of movies only have a DOlby Digital track.

Yeah I will never buy dvds retail again..I was gonna start selling dvds and found a good distributor(a company that distributes to big retailers like best buy, hastings, ect..) and found out that their wholesale prices were about the same as retail prices. I then found out that retailers actually don't make a lot of money from dvds, especially new releases, and normally expect a loss rather than a profit. Websites actually mark their price around $5.00 less than what they paid just to get customers to their store/website. How people sell dvds so cheap on ebay and amazon, I'll never know.

Actually for Ebay I heard a lot of them just take used dvds and just re-wrap them, so watch out for that.

I've tried setting the audio options on the blu-ray discs to both DTS and Dolby and neither work (my receiver handles both). I rented the Rambo blu-ray tonight and can only watch it in "simulated" surround sound.

One thing I'm wondering is if my receiver is just too old. It handles Dolby and DTS 5.1 (its a pioneer I got about 5 years ago). The Rambo blu-ray is in DTS-<something> 7.1 - might my receiver not recognize it?

I'm a Blu-ray addict. Currently own 47 with 2 more on the way. For picture quality that is just amazing I would recommend;

Casino Royale
I Am Legend
I, Robot
Apocalypto
Live Free or Die Hard
No Country for Old Men
Sunshine
The Patriot (forgot how good that movie really is)
30 Days of Night
Ratatouille
Pirates of the Caribbean 1,2, & 3

and saving the best for last;

Planet Earth - simply stunning visually:eek:

Good call on Man on Fire. That movie rocks, and is a great Blu Ray movie. I still have not watched that one yet.

Picked up Rambo tonight. Looking forward to watching that one tomorrow.

Oh yeah, good call too on suggesting folks purchase from Amazon. They always have great deals. DeepDiscount is good too like someone else mentioned.

Now that I think I'm finally finished buying HD DVDs after Toshiba surrendered (collection up to around 200, just waiting on Star Trek Season 1 from Amazon Canada), I'll start to to look at Blu ra deals. I'll probably just go the Netflix route for a while unless there are some good 2 for 1's on movies I really want. Unfortunately, without competition prices may not come down much for a while, unless Sony gets concerned that sales of the discs aren't keeping with expectations.

I went to target to buy there will be blood on bluray but they didn't have it...

My local Wal-Mart had all the new releases except Patton and for the most part they were as cheap or cheaper than Best Buy or Target (in a couple of instances cheaper than Amazon). I picked up;

Patton (on-line order)
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (on-line order $15)
We Were Soldiers (in-store $19.95)

TWBB, Cloverfield, B Movie, and Eyes were in stock but not something I'm interested in.

Well apparently there are two versions. The original Blu-Ray was complete crap and didnt look any better than the standard DVD. I guess they remastered it and released it again and supposedly the newer one is one of the best Blu-Rays out now as far as picture quality. If you're just talking about the movie itself, I thought it was ok but not that great.

Depends on the Walmart. Topeka had several left. I had to order Bladerunner on line though. Site to store.

And yes, the $15 sale is online also through today.

Yeah, Walmart wants to get everyone to start using site to store. I hate it but also hate paying $3 of shipping on a disk. Site to store almost always takes 3 weeks even though the store already has the item in stock.

What store are you using? And what are you talking about $3 for shipping? I have used site to store shipping quite a few times and it's free plus the longest I've ever had to wait for an order to arrive at the store is 5 days. It usually arrives in 2-3 days.

That was my point. Site to store is free but you have to wait longer for things in order to save the shipping money. $3 was the amount to have it sent to my home.

Darn, that's brutal. I usually order on-line on Tuesday and the clerk that handles site to store comes up to me on Thursday or Friday to let me know that my order has arrived. (It's a definite advantage for me since I'm currently working at Wally World to start with.)

(Oh, and they know immediately when you order - the store evidently receives a notice of all site to store orders) The same lady will walk up to me on Wednesday and say "I see you've got another order coming).

Why can't they do it like Best Buy. Order online and pick it up at the store the same day.

I don't Know about Best Buy, but most of the on-line stuff at Wal-Mart isn't kept at most stores. My first order was a Blu-ray player that shipped from California. That's the one that took 5 days. The movies I've ordered have come from the main warehouse in Harrisonville - only about an hour's drive from my Wal-Mart store and they arrive by Fed-Ex to the store. We get shipments every day so there's a steady flow of material.

My point is this though, Walmart already has the product in store when it is ordered online. Seems they want to inconvenience you with a long wait just to save some money.

Plus, Walmart is the only major department store that WON'T match their online prices.

The items I've ordered have not been in stock when I ordered them. It is about the money though - you're right about that. If the store sells you an item they have in stock, then they have paid shipping on that item and want their money back. If an item is ordered on-line and is shipped to the store they don't pay shipping charges; the store that shipped is responsible. That's why most Wal-Mart stores won't match on-line prices.

Not meaning to complain too much. The first item I bought was the rock band drum set online for $55. $25 more in the stores. Today I ordered Blade runner for $15. $30 in store.

The savings are worth it. I just think it is ridiculous to have to wait 3 weeks for site to store.

Agreed. If I had to wait that long I would use site to store only as a last resort. I can't believe they're that bad. Guess I'm just luckey to be in an area with quick service.

The AVS thread you're referring to is based on several of its users opinions, I disagree with a lot of their ratings. Planet Earth looks just as good to me as all of the movies in their Gold Tier and even as good as a few in their Blu Tier.

True, but lately I have been buying my Blu-Rays because of the list and I would have to say its pretty spot on.

From what I hear, there are some astonishing scenes in Planet Earth, and some that look like an Upconverted DVD.

My new TV looked so amazingly great from the few channels that broadcast in 1080i, I talked myself into getting a blu-ray player. I've seen 3:10 to Yuma, really like the movie, but I was always sort of curious about The Golden Compass, looks like it has enough nice CG scenes to mesmerize me.

Out of all the Blu-Rays I own, only one could even be considered a Comedy and thats Ratatouille, which is animated and looks great.

So those of you with comedy movies, let me know what you think of them. I'm more into those movies for the laughs than the looks.

I ran into that while I was in their store today. Almost bought it but resisted. Came away with my one game, Motorstorm, and both National Treasures.

Of course, I got home and noticed that the Motorstorm instruction book was some foreign language. I sure hope the game itself isn't that way or I will be pissed. Won't know for certain until tomorrow though.

What really sucks here is that Walmart has given themselves until July 7th to supply this title even though the store already has it in stock. Says delivery expected anytime between 6/25 and 7/7. And this was ordered last Saturday.

On the front page of the Wal-Mart web site in the bottom right hand side is a list of options. One is "On-line customer service". If you click on that line you will be given an e-mail or phone# option for contacting Wal-Mart. It's worth a try.
Also just below that is "track your order" You can click on that to see the status of your order - if it is still being processed or has actually been shipped. I never receive a notification that an article has actually shipped - just when it has arrived at the store. If it takes that long to process then it's the site-to-store that is the problem. If it's been shipped and it takes that long to get there, the problem lies in the shipping method.

Heres what it says...

1. Wait for an email telling you your order is ready for pickup (7-10 business days).
2. Print the email. You will need it at the store. (Only one copy is needed per order.)
3. Go to the Site to Store area at your store (usually located at the back of the store) and present your printed email and a valid photo ID.
4. Your items will be held at the store for 21 days. If not picked up within 21 days, the items will be returned to the distributor.

Technically they have a full 2 weeks. 10 business days is 14 days, even though walmart is open for business every day, I'm guessing the distributors are not.

Well aware of that. BUT... the other poster gets his in 4-5 days. I end up waiting 3-4 weeks. That is unacceptable.

Heres the response I got from Walmart.com...This may seriously be the end of me shopping there.

Please note:
1. Though your payment method is authorized in order to process your
order, it is not charged until after your order is confirmed as shipped.

2. After your order has shipped, it may take 24 to 48 hours for the
carrier to update their tracking information.

3. Some orders may be shipped using a carrier that shares limited
tracking information. Please allow an additional 3 business days past
the latest expected delivery date for the item(s) to arrive.

4. Customer Service Associates do not have access to any additional
information other than what is on your "My Account" page.

5. If your question pertains to a Site to Store order and you did not
receive the email confirmation to pick your order up you can contact the
store and in most cases they will be able to locate the order for you.
In addition, if you did not receive the email confirmation you will need
to take a valid photo ID and your order number ? we recommend printing
this email for accuracy. For future orders, please check your spam
blocker to see if it is blocking Walmart.com emails from your computer.

We appreciate your business. If you have additional questions, please

Dear Matthew,

My name is Deo. I am with the Walmart.com Customer Service Team. Thank
you for allowing me to assist you today.

I am writing in response to your recent inquiry. Your order
2677351678641 for 300 (Blu-ray) (Widescreen); Format: DVD, is
processing. Please note that processing for this order may take up to 5
business days after being placed.

Your Site to Store order should arrive at your store approximately 7-10
business days after processing. When your order is ready to be picked
up, you will receive an email notification letting you know it has
arrived at the store. In the event that your Blood Diamond (Blu-ray)
(Widescreen); Format: DVD, does not arrive by 1 July 2008, please email
us back so we can research the issue further.

Please be advised that the inventory of our local store is different
from our online inventory. Since the order was placed online, you will
need for the order to arrive at your local store before you can pick up
the order. Should you find the same items on your order at the store,
you have the discretion of purchasing them at the store and of not
picking up your order when it arrives. However, we cannot guarantee the
same price on items sold at stores since the majority of your Wal-Mart
Stores will not accept on-line price-matching.

You may pick up your order between 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily.

You will have 21 days after the arrival of your order to pick it up at
the store. If the order is not picked up in 21 days, it will be returned
and your credit card will be refunded for the purchase.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

Thank you for visiting Walmart.com. We appreciate the opportunity to
serve you and look forward to your next visit.

If we may be of further assistance, please email us at help@walmart.com.
We're here to serve you 7 days a week!

How is Batman Begins on bluray? I was suprised to see it was nowhere to be found on the Bluray PQ thread on AVSforum.

Never mind. I just realized it has not been released on bluray yet.

Also, Amazon has Fifth Element for $11.95 for those of you that like that movie. Batman Begins is $17.95 preorder.

I like Deep Discount. They are no BS. So far amazon and Walmart have pissed me off.

I preordered Cloverfield from Amazon MONTHS in advance, yet they didnt want to send it to me until August 8th (the movie came out June 3).

Walmart is taking forever on items they already have in the store. Not only that but they did a partial shipment of my 2 blurays from site to store. Like I want to go to Walmart twice and stand in that long Customer Service Line.

Deep Discount is the shit though.

Through the 29th, you can use code ddaf to get 20% off all Blurays and DVDs and Im planning on buying Planet Earth today for $50 some dollars.

Shipping is free too.

Broke down yesterday and bought a Phillips 47" 1080p HD tv. I bought a Zenith HDTV when they first came out with HD and it was one of the best, but the best connection it offered was component (Red,Blue,Green cables.) Also the best picture quality I could get was 1080i.

All I can say is DAMN  what a picture! It is simply stunning in clarity. I thought my old set had a good picture, but this is a picture I had only dreamed of ever seeing on my television. I've watched "Troy" and "Blade Runner" so far and I'm in love.

What kind of Blu-ray player are you using? I own a Sony BDP-300. Bought it in February and have already had to update it 3 times.(The updates are free and available from the Sony website). Depending on what player you have, it may need to be updated to play the latest java discs. I've heard of lots of people having troubles playing certain discs in their players, but so far I've had no problems. I just make sure to keep my player updated.

Here is a great site for the latest Blu-ray information; from new releases to audio and vidio problems and solutions to "hot deals".

Yeah, I wish they would have packaged the PS3 with #1 or 2, #3 just isnt as great, although I must admit that I didn't hate it, just didn't like it as much as #1 or 2.

Why the hell would you buy either of the national treasures? The second one was one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. I had to stop watching it on my flight to Japan, and i had absolutely nothing else to watch. It is that bad.

If you read my whole list, you may notice that there are some horrible titles on their. I am the type who can enjoy visually stunning scenes as well as a deep storyline.

However, I hadn't seen either of the National Treasures in the theaters, and the first time I watched them was on Blu. I actually enjoyed both movies, the first one a little more though.

I liked them both too. The first was a better film but the second looks amazing on Blu Ray.

I don't own any blu-rays yet. Don't know that I ever will. I rent movies off of Netflix and once I've seen a movie I probably won't want to watch it again, unless it blows my mind. Then I might watch it maybe 3 or 4 more times after I buy it.

I'm just not much on re-viewing movies I've already seen once.

And I'm kicking around the idea of selling this damn blu-ray player(PS3) since it really serves no other purpose to me, but I know it's a quality player and when blu-ray starts dominating the market I'll have to buy another player if I sell this one.

Have you seen that Box they are selling off of Netflix for watching streamed movies on your TV??

I think it costs $99 ?

Might be a decent option for someone like you?

I watch the stream movies off netflix alot on my PC or laptop and it work great for me. Video quality is very good too.

Whats the point? Their stream selection does not include recent releases. Also, if you don't have a 6mb connection, you get stuck with the low quality stream. No thanks.

Yeah, I am tempted to sign back up with them just for the blu rays I don't want to buy. just one out at a time. Really not a bad deal for 5 bucks a month. I rarely have time to sit down and watch a movie at home anyway.

All BR movies look better than their dvd counter parts, but there are some that just look incredible and are made perfect for HighDef.

Some examples are the Disney movies, like Cars, Ratatouille, etc. Also I-Robot looks amazing, Man on Fire, etc.

Shows the best BR movies to see based on the best picture and sound, give it a shot if you buy a BR player, they rock. I own a ps3 for my player.

So, I somehow managed to get my hands on Iron Man a few days early and I started to watch it last night before I fell asleep. I got about an hour into the movie (before he starts to do any super-hero shit), but the quality is outstanding. I'm sure this will be a reference title.
