View Full Version : Music Songs that are hard to sing

For some reason, I can't sing along with Boston's "More Than A Feeling" at all. First off, it's got a much wider vocal range than my own half-octave range, and second, it's in some key that is exactly where my voice doesn't do well.

What songs are difficult for you to pull off? What songs would make you weep if they showed up for you in a karaoke contest?

Young people are invited to participate in this thread too, even though rap music is so simplistic and non-musical that anyone with a single vibrating vocal cord can "sing" rap, even if they have to use that little synthetic voice thingie that people with throat diseases hold up to their larynx.

I can do that Titanic one pretty good. I see tears in people's eyes when they hear me sing it.

Unchained Melody is a bitch; not the whole song, but the sudden, prolonged high notes in two spots. I've sang this on karaoke many times, and always get a good reaction (it's a crowd favorite), but I only feel I've truly nailed it a couple of times.

National Anthem

Hands down the hardest song to sing.

3 octave range or something like that.

Acapella and all eyes and ears w/cameras.

The finest singer I ever worked for did a "banner" gig and swore it was the toughest thing he ever did.

(see Carl Lewis/Charley Steiner)

I disagree sir Fax. Bohemian Rhapsody is a breeze when intoxicated.

LMAO

You have a point, Mr. CJizzles. For my second try, how about David Crosby's "Song With No Words"? Nobody covers that one.

As far as technically difficult, Star Spangled Banner has always had that reputation.

But what the thread starter is talking about (I think anyway) is when a certain song floats right around your vocal range "break."

For me, Bob Segar tunes are right there. Especially "Old Time Rock and Roll." That one is basically a choice between the absolute bottom of my "head" voice, which sounds weak and has a weird tone, or the absolute top of my "chest" voice where I have to yell it out and push hard with my throat. It's cool that I can get that classic rock 'growl' out of my voice, but it would basically turn me into a mute by the end of the night...

BTW, I'm in a cover band.

Songs I do that are in a similar range.
"Alright Now" -Free
"Fortunate Son" -CCR
"Proud Mary" -CCR
"Long Cool Woman" -The Hollies
"Rockin' in the Free World" -Neil Young

Playing out every week or so has made all these easier. So has taking a little bit better care of my voice.

It's funny that you post this thread about this particular song. A couple of days ago, I had this exact same thought about Boston's "Rock and Roll Band".

Edit: No not about how *you* can't sing it. About how *I* can't sing it. :p

I can't hear this song anymore without picturing Turk from "Scrubs" performing it with his "Air Band."

Damn that drummer is good.

My band covers Sublime, Same in the End...I swear that dude doesn't take a breath in that song. I'm usually pretty vocally toasted by the end. We covered Wasted Years by Iron Maiden, and at the end they do the chorus twice...I can't do that back to back, so we always just do it once...and even then sometimes I can't quite pull it off.

...also anything by Don Henley, who sings at the very top of my range all the damn time...
