Clinton Says No Nominee on Tuesday -- Makes Direct Appeal to Superdelegates

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., thanked Puerto Ricans Sunday night for helping her to victory on the island where she spent five days campaigning, saying “Te quiero Puerto Rico!” Her real message, however, was to the undecided superdelegates who Clinton hopes will veer her way to salvage her campaign.

Clinton’s main argument is that she is leading in the popular vote, saying this evening, “More people across the country have voted for our campaign. More people have voted for us than for any candidate in the history of presidential politics. We are winning the popular vote. Now there can be no doubt. The people have spoken, you have chosen your candidate.”

The senator argued that there will not be a nominee on Tuesday saying, “So, when the voting concludes on Tuesday, neither Sen. Obama nor I will have the number of delegates to be the nominee. I will lead the popular vote, he will maintain a slight lead in the delegate count. The decision will fall on the shoulders of those leaders in our party, empowered by the rules, to vote at the Democratic convention.

Speaking directly to superdelegates, Clinton said, “I do not envy the decision you must make. But the decision has to be made. And in the final assessment, I ask you to consider these questions. Which candidate best represents the will of the people who voted?” Clinton said. “Which candidate can best lead us to victory in November, and which candidate is best able to lead our nation as our president in the face of unprecedented challenges at home and abroad?”

Clinton, as she has done for the past four election day speeches, made a direct appeal for money, urging people to go to her Web site. “I cannot complete this journey without your help. We have two contests left. We have South Dakota and Montana, and you can make a difference by visiting hillaryclinton.com.”

Pop singer Ricky Martin, who endorsed Clinton, blasted through the speakers as she entered and exited the stage. She swayed back and forth to the music with her Puerto Rican co-chairs. :shake: Clinton now embarks on a seven-hour red-eye flight to South Dakota where she will spend the day campaigning tomorrow.

The funny thing is that Democrats actually seemed surprised.

She is quitting on Tuesday in NY where she is going to concede.

Also just saw on MSNBC that upwards of 35 House members are coming out to endorse Obama tomorrow which with the SD and Montana delegates will put him over the top.

And Obama is in NY that day as well...

She has told her staff to go home or join her in NY...Bill has stated that this is his last day campaigning. She's going to concede and then back Obama. Thank god...

And most of the people around here who have at the same time been outraged by Hillary and her supposed lack of character and dismissive of the toxic nature of the sermons at Obama's longtime church will welcome her support with open arms.

I won't.

So assuming that Hillary endorses Obama and/or starts to campaign for him, do you think he should disassociate himself from her and refuse her support? If so, how important is that to you? Are you willing to withhold your support for Obama as long as he embraces the support from such a disreputable person as Hillary?

Or are you instead just going to say you don't welcome Hillary's support but secretly rejoice that the party may be unified enough to get Obama over the hump for the general?

I don't care what Hillary does as long as she is not on the ticket. Well let me clarify if Hillary is forced on the ticket at the convention then I guess that would be ok because that is really not by choice.

As divisive as I think Hillary is, she cannot be compared to someone light Wright, Farrakhan or Hegee. She has quite a backing that Democrats will need to pull together if they are to win in November for not just the presidency but in congress as well. Truth be told if you look at the platforms between Hillary and Obama they are very similar. The difference is I believe that Obama can lead the country to come together. Hillary has shown that she can be an agent of divisiveness. I think it would be a mistake for him to select her as VP for this reason. Many on the right wing would come out to vote against the chance of Hillary getting the presidency. Her backers will need to have their feathers unruffled.

That decision kind of undercuts the argument that Hillary's popular vote lead isn't valid. Fortunately for Republicans, democrat superdelegates don't have the balls to do what they ought to do and nominate the stronger general election candidate.
