Sorry if it's a repost, but I'm seeing a lot of talk about this... thought we might centralize the discussion.

This makes me excited.

During a March 21, 2008 Official Xbox Magazine podcast interview, Todd Howard revealed that the game had expanded to nearly the same scope as Oblivion. There were 500 versions of the final cutscene, but due to recent upgrades, there are now over 10,000 different versions, which was determined by all of the actions taken by the player.

There is supposedly 500 or so different endings, but many of those are very minor changes.

Soul Calibur outta be great but I wasn't a big fan of games like virtua fighter because it seems really hard to remember all of these combos and it was hard to perform them on the controller. But I loved that game on dreamcast. The Force Unleashed looks like a good one!

Holy shit, Gametap is getting Fallout.

And it's going to be one of their free games.

If you do not play it and you've never played Fallout before, you're literally damaging yourself.

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/06/06/new-fallout-3-sku-adds-life-sized-pip-boy/

Amazon has snagged exclusive rights to sell the "Survival Edition" of Fallout 3. The Survival Edition is basically the entire Collector's Edition, previously seen before, plus a life-sized Pip-Boy 3000 -- just like what's in the game. The exclusive new item functions as a working digital clock and, well, will cost you an extra 50 smackers over the 80 dollar Collector's Edition. Doing the basic arithmetic, that comes out to about $130. The console versions of the Survival Edition will ship only to North America -- no Europe, sorry.

While we can say the Pip-Boy 3000 is certainly an interesting piece to add to one's collection, we're not sure if the price merits a purchase over the other SKUs. We guess you have to be true hardcore Fallout fans to get this. If you're on the borderline and want to know more, you can have a read of how Bethesda came up with all this extra collector's stuff. Also, see more images of Pip-Boy 3000 here.

Fallout looks, what's the word, awesome.

Late in the day I got to really take a better look at Fallout 3, and I’ve gone from dismissive to eager. Seeing the game demoed at the Microsoft Press Conference, I definitely came away feeling that it had inherited all the things that made Oblivion feel a bit slipshod. Now that I’ve been able to see the earlier portions of the game, I think I realize the investment a player will have to make in regards to his character, and therefore, the rewards he’ll feel in the later game. We were lucky enough to be able to start three simultaneous Fallout 3 sessions during our visit at Bestheda. By the time we were done there, Jeff had devastated the local doctor and his clinic, Ryan was trying to disarm an old nuclear bomb and I think Brad was hunting rats. We were only there for a short time, but it was enough to see that this game has the potential to not only envelop the player in its atmosphere, but also give him plenty of opportunities to feel like he’s making his own way in the world. Also, I was extremely glad to see that the “nasty” dialogue options seem to have the kind of bite and humor that I loved from games like Planescape and the original KOTOR. It’s only an initial impression and things could definitely sour, but as a Fallout fan, this is the first time I’ve been truly excited about Fallout 3.

How so?Well, as said previously the leveling system where all the enemies level with you was retarted. As was the random loot and complete lack of cool unique items. The AI was terrible and the NPC interaction was horrible. Not to mention that the npc's looked like shit and all of them shared the same 3 voice actors. The world was the most boring, generic, sterile fantasy world they could have possibly created. All the caverns, caves, ruins, oblivion gates, and cities were samey and boring. Exploration was a chore. The main quest was laughable and the world was completely unconnected and without consequence. And the shitty combat.

All I enjoyed in the game was the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves quests.

Fallout 3 is an oblivion style rpg set in a post nuclear war setting. I think it is coming out for the ps3, but I could be wrong.

Fallout 1 and 2 are about a decade old, and are isometric rpgs in the same setting, for the pc.

Reviews I've read sound similar to Oblivion time-wise, that if you only do the main quest it's about 15-20 hours, but there's hundreds of hours worth of wandering-around and side-questing to do.

Speaking of Oblivion, most of the reviews are saying F3 is a better game, more focused, better story, etc, etc, so people worried about it being Oblivion with guns can probably stop worrying.

You don't earn money at the same rate when you aren't playing, so this method isn't as effective as you would think/ But really, money is easy enough to earn and Fable, and if you invest your money in property you should easily be able to afford anything except maybe the castle.

A bigger game geek than I.

She's just into more "girl" games - she can play The SIMS 2 for hours on end, but she's probably a bigger nut than I am with Oblivion.

She still hasn't finished the game, because she recreates her character after level 10 or so. She's still trying for the perfect character before she plays the main quest.

This game is fantastic. Like keg says, the character creation early on is very well implemented. I've decided to not jump straight into the main story but instead pick and chose some sidequests to earn caps and experience.

I haven't really determined what kind of character I'm going to play as throughout.. I've been a dick to some people (Butch) and helpful to others; mixed karma.

I've only played it on 360, but from the reviews I've read and the screenshots I've seen, the PC version is superior. If your computer can run it on decent settings, the PC version will look better and run at a better framerate. Plus there is the option for mods in the future.

I'd be playing it on a PC if my Laptop could handle it.

Sweet Jesus.

Even after having to turn of AA because there's a weird mosaic effect on people's faces when it's on (a similar thing happened with the Witcher, but that time it was anisotropic filtering instead; bizarre), I'm so glad I bought this off of Steam. I actually felt kind of sad when I got pulled away from the tutorial vignettes, and after I left the vault and killed a few raiders in an abandoned school, nightfall came. It wasn't as pants-wetting as S.T.A.L.K.E.R., or anything, but I was still incredibly relieved when I found Megaton's front gate.

I'm so, so tired right now, but I have the strongest urge to turn this back on.

It does look like a shooter but it is definitely an RPG. You don't run around shooting and blowing shit up like you would in a FPS (although you do have the choice).

Maybe I can land it at the library for a 2 week free trial. If the machine works that is.

Turn based probably wasn't the best way to describe it. You basically pause the game and queue up attacks on various parts of enemies' bodies. You have a % chance of hitting the target based on your skills and stats.

But yeah, Fallout doesn't really play like a shooter.

One of the first things you want to do is either make that bomb blow up that town or disarm it. Depends how you want to play this game.

You need a place to stay in either Megaton or get a deluxe apartment in the sky at Tenpenny towers to put all your stuff.

If you have a wired controller, you can plug it into your PC.

If you're like me, and have a wireless controller, you need Microsoft's wireless receiver (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessgamingreceiver/). You can use any wireless 360 device on the PC that way.

Most games auto-map the controls, and if the game is Games for Windows Live enabled (like Fallout 3 or Crysis), 360 controller support is native.

The only recent game that gave me a problem out of the box is NBA 2K9. Their default controller settings were atrocious, but a quick reconfiguration fixed it.

You have a flashlight kcxiv, on the PC you hold down on the tab key for a few seconds and it comes on.

It was pretty damn engaging in the vault, I really got sucked into creating my character and weighing out his different reactions to different situations.

I f*cked that Morty fella up in Megaton, and then I got owned by the town folks, so I gotta start over outta the vault here in a few minutes.

I'm enjoying it immensely, but I haven't played an RPG since Everquest like 7 years ago, so I'm not really fond of them as a whole; but I really enjoy this game, and I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I went to the supply store and she sent me on a quest to the super market to pick up some food and meds and I procedded to pop a couple of Raiders f*cking domes off.

Then I blast the shit outta this puppy dog with a laser pistol and turn that motherf*cker to ashes on my way back to Megaton. And when I get back in town, it's dark and she's locked up for the night, so I go into the nearest open building, the water processing plant and splatter Leo's brains all over the desk with a hunting rifle and steal everything in his desk.

Then I went to the saloon and blew half of the caps on booze because I f*cking could.

I gotta say, that Bloody Mess perk is pretty frickin' cool. I love the death/dismemberment graphics, and the fact that when a mob blows to pieces, you can just search the piece that lands closest to you!

Also love Dogmeat, although he totally changed my game play. I played pretty slow, constantly sneaking, sniping for the guaranteed critical hit on the first shot from hiding, laying mines for when the mobs came after me, etc. With Dogmeat, you can't really maneuver while sneaking. I didn't hear that... and searching through the bodies later I didn't find anything. Will look again now, though.

No, I did it the hard way. I killed him with a missile launcher and a mini gun.

It was in the corpse hanging off the center piece with the Map Display (before the stairs to GNR)

Well, when fire me boy said he fired missiles, i presumed he meant out of the Fat Boy. But it only took me one missile (thats all it would let me fire, because the gun was in poor condition)) but used about 100 rounds to his head to finish him off. I got my first taste of the big guns there.

I killed the mutant with a one Fat Man nuke - direct hit to the chest.

I totally abandoned F3 for LBP. I will get back to F3 though. I am getting close to beating Star Wars, but so many good games come out and i get side tracked. I cant play for 4-5 hours at a time anymore. I just play for an hour or 2 at a time.

Heh...I abandoned F3 to finish Dead Space which has been well worth it.

SPOILERS ZOMFG!2323

So since I have all this brand new freedom, I have spent every waking hour on this game.

my character..from the start, i reduced all my attributes to see the total points available, then put them all into strength and endurance...and then scattered the rest among the leftovers.

I decided I was going to be evil after talking to burke at megaton, activated the bomb, figured everyone was going to die anyways so I killed the whole town. Went to tenpenny tower, blew up megaton, finished that quest, got my suite, waited til tenpenny was out sniping by himself and started a new quest. Seems Roy Phillips wanted to be let in to the tower, so I went to pay him a visit. Roy wanted me to open an access tunnel to set his feral ghouls on the population in the Tower, which I obliged, but I finished the quest back at tenpenny through conversations. Then I killed that sumbitch, and everyone in the tower, went back to Roy and opened the gates.

Then I was off to Greyditch, killed the ants, got the Fire Ant perk, then proceeded to own all the the DC wastelands, killing everything in site. Though I havent killed the citadel yet, waiting for a bit longer. Anyways, I go into the Museum of History, become a friend of the ghouls...which Roy gave me a ghoul mask for my troubles so now ALL ghouls and feral ghouls never attack me... completed the quest for Azkulaha by killing Greta and then gaining the contract for Charon. I left charon there and proceeded to start the other quest in search of the Family. Found the family, became a friend of thiers, gained vampirism, went back to the town the Family was protecting and killed them all.

Then I went to Republic of Dave, killed him and took his key, for a Mister Crowley quest in the Underground. He required four keys...so I found all four, head shotted all the key carriers, and then the game took a turn that I wasnt ready for. All this time, I would start a quest, do the objective, come back and finish the quest, then went on a murdering spree killing everyone...But in paradise falls...lol..i came across a slave trader, which I promptly bought a blond whore there for 1000 caps and she became my personal body guard lol. so now I have a ghoul bodyguard and a blond bodyguard. Then I also told a slave trader that I had a boy from greyditch looking for a home, so I sold this guy the boy, he gave me a collar to place around the boys neck and I was off to Greyditch. I found the boy, mezzed him with the gun, placed a collar around his neck, and told him to go to Paradise falls otherwise his head would explode lol. I then went to Rivet City, found Flak and did the same, followed by Big Town..right after rescuding Red from Germantown Police Headquarters, I made sure she got back to town then i attached the slave collar and killed everyone in town LOL.

Oh yeah, also, at Rivet city I found a quest to get the Declaration of Independence which I found in the archives, along with the bill of rights...finished that quest for big money and exp.

I've opened nearly 90% of the map...the only people that I have come across that I let live...are the kids from Little Lamplight ( which I rescued three more kids after sacking the town and freeing Red and Flak for more experience) THe Citadel that houses the Brotherhood of Steel, and then Rivet City.

As for the Main storyline, the guys father is at the Purity lab, west of Rivet City.

Oh yeah, and I am also a member of Reilys Rangers.

THis game is just too much fun....theres alot of replay value.

Its too damn fun to be this evil. The Mysterious Stranger perk and Mr Sandman are fun as hell. Nothing like a trenchcoated figure to show up in VATS and kill the target...or when ANYONE is sleeping and you can uh...make them a permanent resident of la la land.

SPOLIERS DONT READ >>OMG

MisterCrowley required four keys to get into Fort Constantine..an old military bunker. It wasnt until I got into there when I figured out whats going on.

Seems, that the Megaton bomb aint the only bomb in the game.

Now, theres also a missle silo there..

And there are also three huge satellite/radar compounds.

I'm wondering if Crowley is going to access this and blow up rivet city with a bomb...

BECAUSE...the quest that Crowley gave me was for four keys..which are needed to activate something. With that being said, the four people that had keys gave me caps if I lied that I didnt kill them..so I took their caps, killed them anyways...I go for maximum karma lowerage when I can...and returned the keys...but these four left crowley for dead amongst the ghouls and feral ghouls. Crowley didnt die, but I was his revenge.

I'm just wondering what the nuclear warheads, the missle silo, and the ability to position the radar dishes/satellites have to do with Crowley..

I'm absolutely lovin' this game. My wife, a big Oblivion fan, isn't quite sold on it. She has just seen me playing, and isn't really big on the gun usage. She's a little bit more toward the fantasy-type games. She also thinks Fallout 3 is a too gory for her. May see if there's a setting to tone it down. I think she'd like it if she'd give it a chance. And I know she will.

Has she played Morrowind? If you have a decent PC laying around and she hasn't played it...
There is no way to tone down the violence and gore in Fallout 3. It was put in there purposely; mainly because the first two in the series were "ultraviolent".

Basically. Last weekend was truly despicable in terms of how many hours I spent playing it. There's no in-game clock, but beating all but 3 of the side missions and the main storyline took about 50 hours. The last two or three storyline missions really picked up the pace, and in comparison to other missions, didn't take much time at all.

Well you shouldn't have been such a dick along the way.

Actually, my first run was my good guy run. My good karma was essentially maxed by the time I ended the game. Fallout 3 more than any other game really made it hard for me to be a bad guy, but during my second run I'm going to be ruthless.

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Bethesda Softworks(R), a ZeniMax Media company, announced that its hit title, Fallout(R) 3 has enjoyed record sales at launch, reflecting the huge consumer demand for the game. Approximately 4.7 million units of Fallout 3 were shipped worldwide last week for the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system, and Games for Windows(R) representing retail sales in excess of $300 million.

Released on October 28 in North America at midnight store openings in over 2,000 retail outlets nationwide jammed with fans eager to get the game, Fallout 3 quickly became one of the industry's top sellers around the world. For example, in the United Kingdom where it was not released until Friday, October 31 the rapid sales of Fallout 3 have led the game to be ranked number one among all video games, as well as being the number one game on each of its three platforms.

Hailed as one of the most anticipated games of 2008, Fallout 3 received a 10 out of 10 review score from Official Xbox Magazine, a result then repeated around the world with perfect scores by some of the industry's most influential and respected critics including: Gamespy, GamePro, UGO, the Associated Press, MSN, The Washington Post, Guardian, FHM, Scripps Howard, G4- TV, The Toronto Star, MSN, and Eurogamer. MSNBC's review offered the observation that it viewed "Fallout as a no-brainer for game of the year." The Daily Star in the UK echoed that conclusion, saying "You can hold all bets on game of the year -- I think we have a winner."

I don't really like the combat system. It has a mediocre story and a barren empty world, but that's typical for Bethesda games. It has fewer quests and things to do than other Bethesda games and most of them aren't very interesting. I just don't see GOTY material here.

I can get the Regular Edition for $20, or the Game of the Year edition for $57....

Which should I go with?

I'd go GOTY, it includes the add-ons. Look for it used from somewhere like Gamestop.

Same maker as Fallout 3, by the way (Bethesda). Same game style.

If you get it, I'd HIGHLY advise you do the first couple main quest things first. The Siege of Kvatch is a BITCH past level 2 or so.

Im definitely getting it, but I'm going to wait til I finish Fallout 3 so I dont throw it aside...

I just looked at some pictures from the game and it looks cool.

I just hope I dont turn into an RPG Freak...like I dont want to be playing WoW like my brothers do all day...

I was never much of an RPG person until Oblivion. Then I spend the next two years looking for something comparable, only for the gamer geeks to tell me, "Yeah, you're not going to find one until Fallout 3 comes out."

That sucks...Good thing I didn't play Oblivion when it first came out...

I wonder how long until something else comparable comes out....

Did you ever play Morrowind?

I tried Morrowind, but it was after I played Oblivion. It was distinctly a step back, and I couldn't handle it.

I understand, though, that it is also a great game.

Looks like the next Bethesda game to come out will be Rogue Warrior | http://www.bethsoft.com/eng/games/games_roguewarrior.html

Generally speaking, there's at least a couple years between their major games. Likely, though, they'll put out some extra add-ons for Fallout in a bit.

I'm just getting into Fallout 3. I bought it yesterday and made it to megaton last night. I'm looking forward to playing later on.

Oblivion isn't for all people, but it's definitely really cool in my book. It's kind of Dungeons and Dragons/Lord Of the Rings feel to it.

I see....

Luckily, after Fallout 3 and then Oblivion I will have a lot of other games to look forward to.

I need to Finish MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, then I have Madden 09, Fifa 09

I am probably going to pick up Resistance 1 and Resistance 2

I played the Mirror's Edge Demo and loved it, I'll probably pick up the game.

I'm probably going to purchase Call of Duty 5 and Mortal Kombat vs. DC.

I have a lot on my plate upcoming.

I have to admit I wondered outside of Megaton a little bit before actually going there. I would recommend looking throughout some of the destroyed structures. Enjoy! The game definitely has got me wanting to get back to playing as soon as possible.

I would say as a rule of thumb(since some things are similiar to Oblivion)Always have at least two saves going at all times. Also, you can actually carry things that weigh more than your capacity will allow in FO3-it slows you down considerably, though. Oblivion if your over-encumbered-you can't move, period. I'm ready to dig in.

Make two saves. Just one right after the other at first. That way if you find you don't like the outcome of a decision, it's easy to go back. It may take a few game days to figure out you don't like the decision.

Tenpenny is exactly the case for me.

I opted to talk my way through everything. Got the ghouls into the tower and everything was grand. I went back a few days later to find out there'd been an uprising and the ghouls had killed all the humans in the tower.

By the time I'd figured it out, I'd saved over my previous save.

I started playing some a couple days ago and am having a really hard time with ammo. I love the sniper rifle and chinese assault rifle, but keep running out of ammo for them and have to resort to my silenced 10mm, which takes a lot of shots to make the kill. I didn't realize how many of those damn ants I would have to kill in the sub station and was down to only having 80 rounds of 10mm and that is it, used the ripper to finish the last 5 of them off.

I might have gone wrong in allocating my points starting out....I went really high on intel and maxxed it out, but didn't know about the things that raise them permenantly, so I wish I would have went for a litte lower there.

I had the same problem when I did that one.

Anyone played with the fortune finder, scrounger perks? What kind of return can you see? It says significantly more, but how much is significantly?

And anyone got the lawbringer perk? I got it, but I can't remember who will buy the bad guy fingers.

Imagine my suprise when I came out on the other side of the sub station and ran into the paladins and mutants there. The first time the paladin ran off and the mutants roasted me, so I reloaded and was a little more ready for them and helped the paladin take them out. Then I went to try to find the lost guy and took out 3 more witht he paladin and he died, so I pressed on (planning to reload from save) and took out another pack of three playing peek-a-boo and tearing them up with the ripper. I'm looking forward to going back there when I am outfit a little more and stocked to the gills with ammo.

I am trying to decide if I would be better off starting over now and re-doing my S.P.E.C.I.A.L again. I like the intelligence, but would like a little more agility now for more vats, and would definately be a little more ammo conservative with the good stuff. I'll start whacking moles with bats isntead of capping them, etc.

Ohhh, and for people that hate lockpicking, I learned a much better way to do it than what it said in the little first timer tutorial.

It said to use w,a,s,d keys to feel your way through it and I was snapping off picks like crazy. When I realized you can use the mouse (or controller I guess) to move the pin around and test each angle until you don't see it wiggle things got waaaaay easier.

There are also some really nice ways to make hacking easier, but I'll leave those out unless someone asks for them specifically.

Wow, reading some of your stuff there is so much more out there that I still have to learn...like hacking, I haven't even tried that yet.

I did go to the train station and come out and got slaughtered by mutants...

I do have a question, I'm going to put this in a spoiler thing so people who are behind me dont have to read this, but FMB, or allen, or BigChiefFan, this should be spoiler free for you...

Im in Megaton and I have been doing Moira's side missions. I then decided to go find Galaxy News Radio, but it wouldn't let me, I had to go through the Train station...is this right???

I started hacking early on, in the mega mart or whatever it is called. I failed and locked out the first one, but spent a lot more time on the second terminal in the Rx room and got it.

I've done all of Moira's stuff. Yes, the only way to GNR is through the tunnels. I hate that, too. This is the first game that has successfully made me claustrophobic down there. Generally, it doesn't bother me, but those tunnels and sewers and whatnot bother the hell out of me!

Yeah I was playing it at like 11:30 pm last night, they scared the crap out of me...

I really need to stock up on ammo before going out on those missions....By the time I died, I only had a few bullets left...I have a feeling that there is other stuff I can be doing first before going out there to boost up my HP level and whatnot...

I don't know, I noticed my critical hits went up by what seemed to be about 50% when in VATS. I got very few outside of VATS, now I get them regularly.

I am only level 10 (don't play during the week), and will be starting again today, but I am so tempted to start my evil character already with all the extra tips from here.

If you're a good guy, find Talon Co. headquarters. Not mapped, but it's SW of the sewer waystation in SW Capital Wasteland. Lots of ammo to be had there. Not to mention when you kill all the Talon Mercs there you get lots of their armor, which can be used to repair Combat Armor.

Watch some of the gameplay vids in this thread, and it will give you the feel of it. From what I can tell, you can manage conflicts in a FPS way or you can go slower and do it in more of an RPG (with targeting, turn by turn type combat). From what the gameplay vids show, sometimes you have to go to RPG mode.

9
7
6

I think that will give me what I need starting out and I can raise the other to what I want as I get bobbles.
