I just got an email from our HR director. It seems that our Senior Staff are starting to think "outside the box". They're contemplating the idea of going to a 4 day work week.

Do any of you work a 4 day work week rather than a full 5 day?

Those working a 5 day work week would you rather have it a 4 day week?

In these times of increased costs, transportation, food, day care it only makes since to do so. Having more free time, time with family is a big bonus.
I maybe working 10 hour days but I do that anyway now.

I'm filling out the survey included in the email in favor of it.

I don't, but a buddy of mine for works for the state and they do 4 10's. He loves it.

Every Fri, Sat, Sun off. Nice gig if you can get it...

Companies are figuring out that a more rested employee is more productive at work. This is why you're seeing paid time off instead of vacation/sick days etc.

4 ten hour days will be far more productive for the company, you just watch.

sure, as long your 4 days aren't Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Some companies do this to avoid paying weekend ot.

We're a governmental agency, we don't work weekends around here ;)

I've estimated it costs me about 8-9 bucks a day for my commute to work.

Saving that much money plus always having a Friday off would be wonderful.

What are you going to do with that $32.00/month windfall?

I have done both 4/10's and 9/80's.

The 4/10's are every nice. Every weekend is a three day weekend. At the company I worked for that did it, they gave people the option to work Monday-Thursday. Or, Tuesday-Friday...

Great to do. More time at home, with the family and stuff to do.

Please tell that to my company.

We've gone the wrong direction - 6 ten hour days...

Every other week? So do you work the 5 day stretch on the off week?

If Rain Man would go for it, I'd be all for it. We're pretty dependent on all the other businesses we work with, though, so until the majority of them go to a four-day work week, I doubt it'll happen.

Our company is thinking about doing that also. Ours won't necessarily always be a 3 day weekend, but I am all for it. It will give me an extra day to get shit done. My transportation costs are small, but there are an asston of people that commute in, that's why they do it.

The accounting firm I use has gone to a 4.5 day week (everybody splits at noon on Friday). I think that's a pretty good idea, except I'm not sure how much work can get done in a half-day ... especially a Friday.

The advantage is that people can get a lot of weekend errands out of the way on Friday afternoon leaving more of the weekend free. I like the concept.

This is one of the biggest points that came up for the change. We have offices across 10 counties in NE KS and people driving from all over the place to each of them.

I worked for several years with a 3 on 3 off, 4 on 4 off schedule. I worked every other Wednesday and every Thurs, Fri and Sat. Loved it.

I now work 4-10's with Thursday, Friday and Saturday off. The only problem with this schedule is that I had to work every Sunday during the season. :deevee:

Yeah, they did some math, and just for the hourlys (I assume they just did them because they will be hit hardest  ), they travel over 19,000 miles per day.

I can empathize with their position, because I'm a po mofo too, but I found a joint IN Sidney to live so as to not pay for as much gas. They could choose to do the same.

I don't agree with that.. Most companies abuse the PTO and screw employees out of hours with the PTO system..

That is my dream come true. 3 days off. I could easily work 10 hours Monday - Thursday. Hell Monday and Tuesday I work 9-9.5 hour days as it is. Usually Fri I work six hours. Makes me not even want to come to work.

Actually, if I had a choice. I would literally work two 20 hour days. Monday and Wednesday. It would not bother me at all. All of the rest of the week to yourself.

Longer weekends is the key!

Complaints have also popped up about people taking so much time off. Everyone is able to receive 1 day of vacation leave and 1 day of sick time paid off every month. Of course many use sick days for other personal matters beside a sickness and use them frequently. No one really looks down on this because it's still considered leave.

Allowing everyone a 3 day weekend could eliminate some of those taking extra days off.

pretty nice to have 2 three day weekends a month.

Myself I work 12 hour rotating shifts, 3 days one week and 4 days the next. Alternating nights and days. Every fourth week I get 7 days off. I have worked this schedule for over 20 years. I love it. I can't imagine what it would be like to work a 40 hour week 8 hours a day.

I've been doing 4-10's with Friday off for a little over a year now. I come home totally wiped out almost every day and only get about 3-4 hours before it's time to go to bed to get up and do it again the next day, but having the three day weekend every day is worth it to me. One thing that sucks is that after I switched to the 4-10's, I developed coccydynia from sitting for extended periods. I'm a software engineer so I pretty much have to take a break to stand up every so often.

We do 4 9 hour days Monday through Thursday and 8 hours on Friday, then the next week just work Monday through Thursday on 9 hour days and get that Friday off. On the Friday you work you just split the eight hours on each work week for the paycheck.

But I also work for the DOE so most of the time I'm trying just to stay awake anyways. :)
Gotta love goverment jobs.

I had a friend once that worked the "4th" shift @ Johnson Controls in St. Joseph. It was 3 x 12 hr days Fri - Sun. He loved the work because he got the whole week off.

If none of you know what kind of company Johnson Controls is they make batteries. He told me after that 3 days his Lead level was so high it made him lethargic the next day or two. He would then detox his body that week for the next shift.

He got paid really well for all that crap though.
