1. Braveheart
2. V for Vendetta

4. Batman Begins
5. 300
6. Gladiator
7. Schindler's List
8. The Green Mile
9. American History X
10. Se7en

An analysis: It seems I like freedom themed movies, particularly action movies. Many comedies are honorable mentions here, but they just can't crack the top ten for me.

I am open to movies I must see and what not. Let's see if we can't get a kickass thread going.

In no particular order:

1 - Leon The Professional
2 - Goodfellas
3 - The Matrix Reloaded
4 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day
5 - Forrest Gump
6 - The Shawshank Redemption
7 - Go
8 - Memento
9 - The Big Lebowski
10 - Pulp Fiction

This list is very subject to change. Who Framed Roger Rabbit could very well have been on this list, but that could be because of the replay value it has to me. The Dark Knight will most likely consume half of the spots on this list.

Forgot about T2 and Goodfellas

Go was pretty interesting, though I have to wonder how many folks here will recognize it. The second to last scene was pretty intense.

Not too many, no. I am only 22 though. The star wars, aliens, rambos, and rockys I have seen (and Mel Brooks comedy, while topping my comedy top ten can't crack my actual top ten.) Epic series type things, however, none of them speak to me on the same level that the newer movies do, which I imagine is to be expected.

I decided to take a different tact with this and list my favorites by genre.

Action – Batman Begins – I hope that all of the buzz on Dark Knight it true, I can’t wait to see it.

Comedy – Blues Brothers – So many options here, but I can’t help but laugh throughout this movie.

Drama – Godfather – It is hard for me to separate I & II, I gave the nod to I because it had to start somewhere.

Epic – Ben Hur – I don’t quite know what the correct genre is for this film, but I had to include it somehow.

Fantasy – Lord of the Rings

Foreign – Cinema Paradiso – I love foreign film, so I had a hard time choosing a favorite here. Cinema Paradiso chokes me up every time. On the other end of the spectrum, Old Boy left a huge impression on me, a great film but disturbing.

Horror – Silence of the Lambs – If you want to call it a horror film. The horror movie that made me jump the most was probably Candyman.

Sci-Fi – Blade Runner – I’m still blown away by the visuals.

Sport – Pride of the Yankees – It too chokes me up. Runners up would have to be (in no particular order) Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and Rocky.

War – The Great Escape – This is one of those movies where I will sit down and get lost in it even though I’ve seen it a million times. In fact, it was on about a month ago and I stayed up until 2AM just to see the ending.

Western – High Noon – Do they make good westerns any more? I also considered Unforgiven and Stagecoach here.

It's a fantastic film, and a brilliant adaption of the novel. I just wish they hadn't left the last chapter out.

It disturbed me more the second time I saw it, after reading the novel and realizing Alex was supposedly 14.

I'd agree with that. Gattica was brilliant, just not quite in my top 10.

For the last couple of years on the IMDB website I've been giving a star rating (1 thru 10) for every film I've seen or can remember. About six months ago I checked my account page and every film I had rated was listed, about 1100 movies.

I made a list of all of the films I had given a score of 8, 9 or 10, which was about 200. I then went through ranking each film over each other until I had a top 100 in order. Here's my top 20 as of about six months ago.

1. Chinatown - 1974
2. The Godfather - 1972
3. The Graduate - 1967
4. Taxi Driver - 1978
5. Amadeus - 1984
6. One Flew over the Cuckoos' Nest - 1975
7. Forrest Gump - 1994
8. The Silence of the Lambs - 1991
9. Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid - 1969
10. The Goodfellas - 1990
11. The Godfather Pt. II - 1974
12. Jaws - 1975
13. Heaven Can Wait - 1978
14. Titantic - 1997
15. All the President's Men - 1976
16. Apocalypse Now - 1979
17. Raging Bull - 1980

I still can't see how 300 can be in peoples ALL TIME top 10.

Maybe I misunderstood the thread title...I thought it was 'YOUR Top ten movie list' and not 'The top ten movies irishjayhawk thinks should be in Your Top ten list'.

It was a great movie imo and obviously in many others opinions too. Its not in my top 10 but I could easily find a spot for it in my top 20.

There are an obvious few for me:

American History X
Rounders
Killer Klowns from Outer Space

Then I hit the tank and have to actually put some thought into this.

Saving Silverman
Grandma's Boy
Tommy Boy (pretty much anything Farley starred in)
Dumb and Dumber
Four Brothers
Night of the Living Dead (re-make)

And I really can't put my finger on the last movie on my list. Oh, and obviously I know I need to broaden my movie tastes. But, I'm a comedy, and zombie flick kinda guy. My favorite two actors include Ed Norton Jr and Farley. So, there you go.

At number #10, my sleeper pick - Demonic Toys.

But, I agree with the rest, this top 10 list is pretty tough!

I didn't say you weren't entitled to your opinion, but go ahead and think I did.

I just have to surmise that people with 300 in their top 10 ever haven't seen very many films or are the reason why Hollywood sucks right now.

in no particular order

Donnie Darko
City of God
Trainspotting
Seven
Forrest Gump
Bulworth
Road to Perdition
Saving Private Ryan
Propisition
Team America / South Park Bigger, Longer, and Uncut

300 was epic and excellent. Your surmise fails, imo. It is a movie about freedom and what people are willing to do to defend it. In addition it was fantastic cinematically as well, imo. Bottom line: Just because you don't relate to a movie, doesn't mean others don't.

Yes, I get that. But the cinematic aspect to it only flies once. If you watch it again it shows that green screen is no where close to where it needs to be.

So, in other words, its an overly styled movie that had a lot of hype.

I'm well aware others view it differently, but top 10? Top 10 in all you've seen? Seems extremely high, especially with what I've seen it put against.

Tough question but off the top of my head in no particular order:

The Godfather
Goodfellas
The Way of the Gun
The Great Escape
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
12 Monkeys
American Beauty
True Romance
Snatch
Layer Cake

I know Sopranos wasn't a movie but the first 3 season rivaled any of the above movies.

I loved Layer Cake. I had read the book and like it a lot. The book and movie have different endings by the way.
And I don't see why people get so indignant if someone disagrees with a movie in their top 10. Top 10 lists are generally so people can debate the merits of them.

my favorites in descending order

The Hudsucker Proxy
Yojimbo - its the same as Fistful of Dollars/Last Man Standing except its set in feudal japan
Raiders of the lost Ark
Ran - King Lear with samurai
Throne of Blood - Macbeth with samurai
Apocalypse Now Redux
Zatoichi: Darkness is his ally
Dr. Strangelove
Conan the Barbarian
Uncle Buck

Wow, this would almost exactly be my top ten as well! I think I would put Ran and Throne over Raiders but thats about it.

Except I have never seen The Hudsucker Proxy, so I guess I better put that in my Netflix queue now!!

I'd post mine, but it changes with my mood and/or level of sobriety.

In the end, it's all about personal tastes.

To me, these threads are just great for finding gems you might have missed out on.

Looking through my collections, other greats:

Dark City
Sphere
Total Recall
Minority Report
Solaris
Kpax
Dazed and Confused
Ace Ventura
Top Gun
Pi

Actually most of my favorite movies are Sci-Fi / Thrillers that really make you think. Shit you don't understand at the end, or even post ending until you discuss it with friends.
If anyone see's something that fits into that category I would like, please list!
