The word is from the local police department, this guy was trying to show off and didn't mean to take the big splash. Oooops!

Car driven into Yellowstone River Initial search doesn't turn up automobile or driver

By BECKY SHAY
Of The Gazette Staff

A man apparently drove into the Yellowstone River at Riverfront Park on Saturday evening.

Witnesses said the maroon car floated a few seconds, maybe about 25 feet down river, before submerging, Sheriff's Capt. Bill Michaelis said.

Neither the car nor the driver - who witnesses believed was alone in the car - was found Saturday evening. A river search will resume this morning.

The car entered the river on the northwest side of South Bridge, where South Billings Boulevard crosses the river. The incident was reported about 7:50 p.m.

Marks could be seen on a rock that separates the parking area from Dutcher Trail, which the car apparently skimmed on the driver's side.

Rubber on the sidewalk suggested that the car accelerated; however, Michaelis said deputies had not determined if the driver went into the river intentionally.

One of the first deputies on scene asked a passing boat to look for the car, but the boaters couldn't see it, Michaelis said.

The Sheriff's Office boat crew was on the water within 45 minutes but did not spot the car during a check of the river Saturday night. They are expected to resume the search by 8 a.m. today. Deputies also talked with the staff from Billings Flying Service to see if a pilot could check the river if one of the business' helicopters was flying in the area.

Billings Fire Department sent an engine company to Riverfront Park and an engine and rescue rig to Coulson Park in case the car floated downstream. A sheriff's deputy also watched near the Dick Johnston Bridge.

While deputies were at the river, a woman ran down the embankment from South Billings Boulevard and yelled, "Hey, that's my husband, is he OK?" The deputy spoke quietly to her, and the woman was overheard saying, "Yes. He made me listen to it as he did it."

She cried and hugged a younger woman while talking to the deputies. Later, the woman walked over to the river and sat on a rock the car narrowly avoided before crashing into the water.

The Yellowstone River near Billings is about 10.5 feet, which is more than 2 feet below flood stage, but it is running fast at about 38,500 cubic-feet per second, according to the United States Geological Survey.

"With the river flowing like this, it's dangerous for our guys to be out there," Michaelis said.

Nice, he even had a wife. Hopefully no kids involved. I wouldn't want them growing up without a father. And it would be best if he didn't contribute to the gene pool. :)

Ya, it would be interesting to find out what exactly he was trying to do. Hard to tell from the article.

Judging by the wife's comments I'm thinking he may have been trying to kill himself.

*Insert jump-to-a-conclusion smilie here*

Sounds like he accomplished exactly what he was wanting. Either he was committing suicide or he had flotation/oxygen devices for a nice little escape.

I don't get what he was doing?

From the latest on the radio, (5 minutes ago) he was "showing off," doing burnouts and the car got away from him. He was doing the burnouts on gravel, but there is payment just on the other side. From what they said, "Dale Jr" hit the pavement and shot off the river bank at a pace that would make Evil Knievel blush. I guess there was numerous tasty adult beverages involved as well.

Is it wrong to be glad he won't be hitting the streets?

That is one of the most poorly written news articles EVAR!

It reads like an elementary school newsletter piece.

Indeed it does. I'm about half tempted to email Becky Shay myself and gravel her ass. :hmmm: Word is they still haven't been able to fish young Jeff Gordon out of the drink yet.

Heh, it would seem there will not be a Darwin Award in this case. It was just reported on the local TV news that "young Mario Andretti" was found alive earlier today. Evidently, he made his way out of the SUV, swam to shore far downstream and went and hid at a relatives house to avoid a DUI. Dipshit........

To avoid a DUI? They should say he won't get a DUI, but they'll have to charge him with attempting/conspiracy to fake his death.

In England, it's ironically life. Not sure about here in America... Some guy got arrested a couple weeks ago after admitting that he faked his death, but the charges they talked about on the news were for other crimes he committed.
