looks as if the Oline is a little overpaid, and that surtain is overpayed without a doubt.

cap is about as important to the chiefs right now
as character is important to the raiders

Surtain, Patrick CB 8,380,000

That's a big one.

Question for the capologists on the board: Could Surtain be a camp casualty because of this figure, or would the cap hit for cutting him make this a moot point?

Awesome. Surtain is doing alright for himself.

It's a sad day when your punter makes more than your starting QB.

True dat. A lot of teams in the last 2 years have had at least $6 million or so of unused cap space left. But this isn't on King Carl. Still it doesn't seem right to just pocket the money as profit instead of paying the money to acquire a player or keep one.

The only number that jumped out at me was Surtain. He needs to restructure.

The only number that jumped out at me was Surtain. He needs to restructure.

He and Donnie Edwards both stood out to me a bit. Edwards' isnt so disgusting, its just that he is old. Hopefully a revamped interior DL can help him out this year though.

I have to admit, seeing Surtains cap figure reminds me of why I love King Carl so damn much :banghead:

You know what makes me sad? Knowing that I will never make half as much as the lowest paid player on this ****ing list in my most lucrative year working, ever. I will go through school and get a Ph.D. and they will have been pushed through school with a velvet pillow and they will get paid $400,000 a year to play a game, of which they play 10%, or less. Surtain, Patrick CB 8,380,000

That's a big one.

Question for the capologists on the board: Could Surtain be a camp casualty because of this figure, or would the cap hit for cutting him make this a moot point? For that number he should QB, Coach and play defense.

It's an ugly number to be sure.

Just to ask again, though, is it possible that Surtain gets cut because of his number against the cap? Or would this be a more costly decision?

I know you all know there are folks out there that know this? Know what I'm sayin? No one?

To accurately answer this questions we'd need to see the detailed terms of the contract. But we can make some guesses from what is known.

According to this link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2043410

"Surtain will sign a seven-year contract worth $50.8 million, with $14 million in guarantees included, league sources have told ESPN.com."

We don't know how those guarantees were paid, but let's assume that all $14M were paid as a signing bonus to be prorated over the life of the contract..

Of the $14M, we've already had 3/7 of it taxed to the cap in Surtain's first three seasons with us.

So that leaves at most (4/7)*$14M = $8 M as the cap hit if we cut him now. Now in reality, the cap hit is probably a $1M or two less than that because of the structure of the contract. Still, it is really costing us very little to keep him on the roster this year. Next year he'll either be cut or restructured.

In general on a 7 year contract:

Years 1-3 you are stuck with him, no matter how bad he plays
Year 4 kinda break even, keep him if he has anything left
Year 5, starting to hurt to keep him, only do so if he is a star and restructuring is not a option.
Years 6 and 7 will never, ever happen. Will be released or restructured.

BTW it doesn't really make sense for either party to restructure at this point. There are two kinds of restructure:

Player advantage restructure: The player is at the top of his game with a huge cap number. The team plans to keep the player at least as long as the current contract, and is looking for cap relief. In exchange, the player gets immediate guaranteed money.

Team advantage restructure: The player is declining and in no way deserves his salary. The player's value on the open market is very questionable. The team holds all the cards and give the player a take it or leave it offer. The player takes it because he still wants to play and thinks this is the best offer he can get.

Neither of these conditions apply to Surtain and the Chiefs. He still has enough value on the open market that if the Chiefs tried to strong arm him into a restructure he'd say "pay me or cut me".

Bailey, Champ -Broncos 12,690,050
McAlister, Chris -Ravens 10,907,082
Samuel, Asante -Eagles 9,145,000
Surtain, Patrick -Chiefs 8,380,000
Tillman, Charles -Bears 8,216,666

Is Surtain even worthy of top 5 in salary? I'd venture to say he's worth about a third of his current contract. :hmmm:

The only reason Surtain is still on the roster is to mentor the young'ns. Wesley will likely be gone on final cut to disallow him to catch on with the Donks.

Waters should step up his game with that salary and mentor the heck out of B Alberts.

Does it matter how much Surtain makes? KC has tons of cap room even with his salary. It's not as if they release him they will do something else with any saved money. Ticket prices won't go down and no trade will be made.

Principles, man! Its about the principles. Our beloved chiefs are finally as bad as we all thought they were before, so now we are forced to piss and moan about something else. I want to get paid half as much as the punter, so that is what I am going to bitch about... that and I want another beer... but im not married so I have to go get that myself.... brb.

It's a sad day when your punter makes more than your starting QB.

Your punter can deliver the ball further and more accurately than your starting QB, so that seems only appropriate.

Strangely, both seem to be equally able to transfer the ball to the opposing team.

Wow. The season must be approaching. I'm on smack duty.
