Most of us would agree with that.

Question:

What's the variance between regular season and off season?

Say, total post average from Sep-Dec vs Jan-Aug

That's a lot of data. If anyone is curious to really do some detailed analysis, I can give you a spreadsheet of posts or threads by day for the entire life of the board. Just let me know if you're interested.

A couple of interesting charts I was able to pull out real quick. I'll also take requests for analysis as long as they're not TOO in-depth...

Looks like we're down a bit on daily posts for 2008. However, we haven't come to the busiest time of the year (based on the first graph), so I'll bet that'll climb up as the year goes on.

As evidence of how well the new server served its purpose, two of the top three days in terms of posts in the Planet's history were the draft days. We had 6517 posts on April 26 and 5782 on April 27. I'd bet our gamedays will see much higher posts volumes this year, based on that.

Ignoring days during the server transition and days when the Planet's server was on fire, the lowest number of posts in a day this year has been 962 on July 8.

this is an initial indicator that the server is up to the task for game day action....

do you have stats on number concurrent users vs posting stats.... and db response time... this is likely a tough one but a real indicator of
is the server "horse enough" to handle concurrency and still give decent response. databases in general are I/O bound.

Unfortunately not. vBulletin's software only records info about the quantities of posts and that type of thing, so there's no server-performance data in there. Somewhere around here, I posted graphs generated by an external service that monitors response times, though. Let me see if I can find that.

Here we go. This is referring to April 26th.

In case anyone cares about stuff like this, here's how things performed yesterday.

Server load (number of processes waiting in queue):
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/8742/loadpf8.png (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1174)

I don't have any historical data from the old server, unfortunately, but I'm told that last year during games this graph would have been well above 4.0 the entire time. Not to mention that the new server has a dual-core processor (I think anyway), so it can handle higher loads without croaking.

CPU Usage:
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/4014/cpuxw6.png (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1174)

Network Usage:
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/1353/networknl5.png (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1174)

RAM Usage:
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/1261/ramusageah1.png (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1174)

Ping Response:
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/3673/pingfb2.png (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1174)
This one just tells how long it takes the server to respond to a generic request, but isn't that useful it determining actual response of the Planet, since that depends a lot on the database response time, too.

Lounge HTTP response time:
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/9366/httprr6.png (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1174)
This one is probably the most meaningful. This is how long it took to actually load the Lounge. However, this is probably much faster than it happens for the average user due the fact that 1)most of our network connections aren't near as fast as the service I used to generate these graphs and 2)it doesn't load any graphics at all; it just transfers the raw HTML from the page and times how long it takes to get it.

Overall, it looks like the server got pretty stressed at times, but the actual response time didn't take a hit at all. Oddly, response time was pretty slow for around 20 minutes this morning between 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. CDT. Not sure about that one, but it doesn't seem to be load-related.

Anyway, just thought some of you might find this type of thing interesting.

DaFace
09-07-2008, 07:02 PM
In case anyone cares, here's how we did today. The top is server load; the bottom is the amount of time it took to load the Lounge.

I've been being a geek and analyzing some of our recent months, and I discovered that September was our first ever 100,000-post month. So hooray I guess.

Interestingly, our "user activity" for the year is actually down a bit. That stat measures how many users log in each day, regardless of whether they actually post. So, if that stat is right, we've got fewer active users, but they're more active in terms of posts.

I'm a little skeptical of that, however, as UA dropped about 20% IMMEDIATELY after the server switch and has never recovered, which kind of makes me think that the old software measured that stat differently than the new software. It certainly did with regard to thread count, as the software claims that we were averaging about 12,000 threads per day on the old software.

I look forward to the part of my personal maturation that allows me to stop going out...my friends and I were playing Rock Band and downed a case of beer and didn't get to the bars until around 11 PM last night. I think I was having more fun playing Rock Band...plus the quantity of champagne I downed caused me to have a killer headache all day...and after this post we're all going out for round 2! I hate being home for the Holiday's...I'm a sucker for peer pressure...can't turn down a beer. Or 10.

I was young once and did all the same shit. I don't know if it's so much as maturation as I still like to party, it's more about me having way too much to lose now so I can't take the risk. Hell, even if you're out there completely sober you can still get caught up in someone elses stupidity.

So the two sad things are that 1) I took 10 minutes to do a semi-close estimate and 2) still got smoked by Hootie's guess.

(Basically copied 7 pages of the main forum into a spreadsheet, tallied the posts in those threads, omitting some of the old ones that had been bumped and added 90% of that total to the amount in DaFace's beginning count).

Thanks for the consolation prize, DaFace.

So what happened in September-October of last year? Was it DC traffic? That slope was steeper than any other regular season on record.

If you look carefully, you can see the draft every year after 2002.

cdcox
03-11-2009, 09:44 PM
The slope during the season in 2002 was almost the same as the slope of the season in 2003. The big difference between 2002 and 2003 was that the slope during off season in 2003 was nearly equal to the slope during the season. 2003 was the first year that CP became a year around board in a big way.

If the slope that we saw last season holds, we've entered a new era of Chiefs planet.

My hypothesis is that it's a result of the new server. In past years, gamedays were somewhat limited by the server's capacity. Now that the cap has been lifted, so to speak, people can stick around here to talk about the games rather than splitting time with other boards and/or getting frustrated and walking away entirely.

I'm wondering that myself. I certainly think that this offseason's activities have sparked an interest level in discussing the team in that we've not seen before. It'll be interesting to see if that holds through the rest of the year. Could a one-million-post year be in our future? :hmmm:

Looks like Dartgod closed it (he has mod powers in CasinoPlanet). It was probably mucking up the forum and got in the way once the season started.

Since it's the offseason, though, I'll open it back up - just for you. It'll probably get closed or moved again once the season comes back around.

At the end of Q1, we had 284,290 posts, which puts us on a pace of over 1.1 million posts for the year. Of course, we'll probably slow down a bit in the summer and speed up a bit in the fall, but overall it seems clear that this offseason isn't near as slow as previous years around here. We're currently (as of April 18) at 334,989 posts, which is a whopping 36% increase over our previous best-year at this point of 2007.

To give you an idea of how much of a difference there is, we averaged 2500 or so posts per day in May 2009 compared to about 1600 per day in May 2008. WTF has changed?

The GM and HC? More interest in the Chiefs in general?

It's really this month that has me baffled. I have been attributing it to the new regime so far, but nothing notable has really happened with the Chiefs this month.

The only thing I can think is that we kind of jump started the offseason with that, and people have stuck around for all of the other dumbassery. In the past, people got bored in February and March, poked their heads in in April for the draft, and then ran away for the rest of the offseason. This year, people have basically stuck around the whole time.

Interesting trend this month. Our average daily post rate so far is slightly down for August 2009 vs August 2008 (2456 vs 2703). That'll probably be pulled up a bit once we get a few game threads going, but the interesting part is that our average daily users is up to 819 from 716. So, people aren't talking quite as much, but a lot of people are visiting. Seems to indicate the level of excitement for this season is definitely up from last year.

Basically, we've picked up at almost the exact same pace we were at last year. However, we had a huge offseason, so we're currently up nearly 200k posts from this point last year.

We're also WAY up in the number of actual users logging in on an average day. This year, we averaged 943 users per day in September compared to only 767 last year.

FWIW, I figured out how to do this. I basically traced back to the last post of last year:

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showpost.php?p=5345926

So, all we have to do is add a million to the post ID, and we should get a link directly to the millionth post of the year. I'll have to keep an eye on where we're at to be able to tell when it happens, but this link will eventually lead us to the big "winner."

Well, we've had a slight slowdown as the season's hope dwindled, though today seems to have added a nice little bump to action around here. Here's the latest chart:

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1319/stats1122.jpg (http://img4.imageshack.us/i/stats1122.jpg/)

In the past 28 days, we've averaged 2,829 posts per day. We were at 935,076 posts as of last night at midnight. So, if we kept that average exactly, we'd hit the 1 million mark early December 14th. I think we'll probably be a little slower than that due to the holidays, so my prediction is that we hit the mark on December 15th. We'll see how it goes.

This is mostly right, though the "since inception" number is probably a little screwy. From what I've gathered, there were some goofy db issues back in the early days that resulted in posts being lost here and there, so who knows how close that is.

Here's how post counts looked last week:

Friday 2129
Saturday 2480
Sunday 4934
Monday 3103
Tuesday 2937
Wednesday 2494
Thursday 2840

So, if we have similar post rates this week, we should hit the mark either late Sunday night or early Monday morning. So, if you're posting during that time, you'd better make sure it's something epic.
