In case anyone cares, we were at 1,028,921 posts for the year as of last night at midnight. If anyone wants to try and guess our total for the year, feel free to post it in this thread. All entries must be submitted by midnight of December 27.
I haven't decided what the prize should be, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm thinking 100k in Casino Cash or a one-month pass to the mod forum as possibilities. The latter is pretty boring on a day-to-day basis, but there are some pretty funny threads in there from "back in the day."

Well, I didn't get much of a chance to promote my latest game, so it looks like Bugeater and OTWP are the only ones in the running for the all-access, one-month pass to the mod forum. :)
Still, if any of the rest of you want to try and guess without calculating it manually, I might throw something good in the direction of the person who comes closest from this point on if the spirit moves me.

For anyone who cares, here's the final post graph of the year:
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/1963/final09stats.jpg (http://img97.imageshack.us/i/final09stats.jpg/)
As you can see, this year is really a continuation of a jump in posting that happened at the beginning of the 08 season. Not sure exactly what happened there, but that's really where things started to tilt toward a 1-million-post year.

Here's another interesting chart. This shows the average number of users who logged per day for each year. The software didn't track it in the early years, but it's an interesting stat for the later years:
http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/704/useractivity123109.jpg (http://img697.imageshack.us/i/useractivity123109.jpg/)
The interesting thing to me is that we've got fewer actual users logging in per day. I'd guess that has a lot to do with the fact that the team sucks and, just like Arrowhead, fewer people are coming around.
However, the fact that our post rate has been through the roof indicates that the people we DO have are talking more. A lot more. So that's kind of cool I guess.
Anyway, that's all I got for now. I'll probably take a few months off to let 2010 get going before posting any more updates. If anyone has any specific requests or anything, let me know.

Hmm....that's a good question. Let me see if I can dig that out.
A warning before anything, though, is that new user stats will undoubtedly be impacted pretty severely by users like Marlboro Chief. He's probably been banned 20 times this year alone. Still, it should be interesting if I can get to it.

OK, I found a way to get to it (mostly) by doing a search for users by join date and seeing the number of results. This will omit the (very seldom) user account that's been deleted (rather than banned), but that shouldn't impact more than 1-2 users per year I don't think.
2005 - 2,006
2006 - 1,525
2007 - 1,105
2008 - 1,680
2009 - 1,350
So, we actually had a relatively LOW year in terms of new users. Once again, I probably blame part of that on the shitty team.
Even with the low number of new users, I'd say based on the results of the "n00b of the year" contest, the quality of our n00bs was pretty good this year, and that's worth something.

It's pretty hard to really tell anything from that graph, but the basic idea is that we're trending almost exactly in line for last year so far. We had 100,161 posts in January 2010 and 99,383 last year, so technically we were up about 1 percent for the year so far.
My prediction is that this year will be much slower than last year due to a number of factors, but we'll see.

Given that we are up this year over last, when we had all the drama over the new GM, new coach, etc, it seems like we could have another good year.

True. My thinking is that the "new coach smell" will really start to wear off after the season officially ends. Less speculation about the coaching staff, potential players, etc. But then, it really seems like the driving force behind forum traffic these days is NOT necessarily the Chiefs, so who knows?
I guess I just don't want to assume we're going to have another million-post year when that could have all been caused by all the changes.

On a related note, our fairly insignificant ad revenue is actually up from last year. For some reason, google adsense has decided to pay us more per click/impression than last year. Still not close to server costs but after I (hopefully) launch a few more planets after the draft... maybe we'll eb at break even!

http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/3063/septstats.png (http://img137.imageshack.us/i/septstats.png/)
One thing that isn't shown on that graph that I find interesting is that our average daily users stat is so far this year is virtually identical to last year. However, we're always busier in the fall, so that means we'll probably have a higher daily user count this year than we did last year once the year ends.
Translating all that, we actually have more active users this year than last year. We just aren't posting as much.
I'd prefer a titty graph, but if you hold that one sideways it kind of looks like the fringe on a Denver girl's sweater as she's trying to make glue out of tree sap and saliva.

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5042/stats20101207.png (http://img689.imageshack.us/i/stats20101207.png/)
Not much of a change from the overall trend of the year. Our posts are down a bit from last year, though we're still well above the 2008 and prior numbers. Interestingly, our average daily users is actually up this year (higher than every year except 2007), which basically means that we've got more people logging in, but they're reading more than they're posting. The server issues could be a small part of that, but the overall trend wouldn't be that severely affected by the server.
Anyway, we'll probably end up at around 900k posts for the year, give or take a few thousand.

Yeah, probably true. The interesting thing about 2009 is that it was actually lower than 2010 in terms of the number of people who were logging in every day (870 vs. 888). So it wasn't that we had more PEOPLE here so much as it was that we had more DISCUSSION going on.

Yeah, probably true. The interesting thing about 2009 is that it was actually lower than 2010 in terms of the number of people who were logging in every day (870 vs. 888). So it wasn't that we had more PEOPLE here so much as it was that we had more DISCUSSION going on.
We're running at 860 at the moment for this year, but that's increasing since we're in the season at the moment.
Let me go ahead and apologize for all the braindead n00bs that are gonna show up over the coming months.
It should make it fun to blast away the the influx, though.

Eh, whatever. It's entirely possible to be a n00b here and get along just fine. Hell, I became an admin here after only being around for 2 years. It's just people who are 1) are not very objective and 2) aren't humble that take a lot of abuse.

Also, thinking about it, you may want to run a few adds for "shiny things" on here....they will probably be a big hit.

Interestingly, we're following almost the exact same post patterns this year as we did in 2010. I also think it's interesting that, for the past four years, we've stayed almost exactly the same in terms of how many people log in each day (between 867 and 887 on average each year).
One kind of interesting factoid that I'd forgotten about is that we had two record days in a row in terms of posts back on October 20-21 (12,359 and 14,046 respectively). You can actually see the bump in the blue line in the graph. Prior to that, the old record was 7,317 set on September 7, 2008.
I can't remember the exact circumstances, but I think it had to do with one of the Survivor Planet games or something like that. Anyway, I'd be surprised if we break

I could be wrong, but I think that was the year that this place was so polarized by the "Drafturbators" and "True Fans." The only thing I can think of is that those repeated arguments drove the post count through the roof. As mentioned above, we've been pretty much flat in terms of the number of people active on the site for a while now.

But that wasn't why he was permabanned. He was permabanned because he made vague threats about suing another member and filing a police report about the Planet.

As for post volume, it's tough to tell. It fluctuates wildly from day to day, so it's tough to tell what kind of trends we're talking about. Generally speaking, I think we're on a faster pace this year than we have in the past few years, but that's just in general rather than in the past week. Anyway, here's the chart:

Yep. I've clearly noticed a greater n00b presence that undoubtedly is due to the banner. I wish that vBulletin kept tabs on guest activity because I'm sure we'd see a nice bump there as well.

Here's our visits report from Google Analytics.
http://i.imgur.com/PXecd.png
You can see that we normally have around 10,000 visits on a gameday. There's a clear spike on Monday (when pr_capone first posted his thread) up to probably 14,000. I think it's safe to say that we had about a 40% initial bump in traffic due to the banner discussion. The point is driven home even more with this one, which is the percentage of visitors who are NEW:
http://i.imgur.com/yXWPj.png
So as you can see, in a typical day, about one-fourth of visits to the site are from people who haven't been here before (or at least recently). On Monday and Tuesday, that spiked all the way up to around 40% or so. Oddly, there wasn't a huge spike in that regard after the banner actually flew. My guess is just that we've been driving traffic to SaveOurChiefs rather than ChiefsPlanet, so that's where people would have ended up.

Not that this stuff matters, but we should break a million posts for the second time this year. We're at about 990k posts for the year as of last night at midnight, and we typically average in the vicinity of 2500 posts/day this time of year. Barring any crazy drop in visitation, we should be there. Anyway, here's the latest chart:
http://i.imgur.com/T1Zln.png
Also, it's not surprising that this was our highest year ever in terms of average daily visitation (registered members). We averaged 908 active users per day this year. The next-highest year was 2007, when we had 894 average users per day. That number really doesn't vary a ton given that we have so many long-time members, though. It was 868 last year for comparison.

This one's always a bit of a pain to do a cool graph with, but here's a graph of unique visitors by month:
http://i.imgur.com/kk3HQ.png
Basically, we've had 743k unique visitors this year compared to 644k in 2011 and 613k in 2010 (no data before that). So, you can probably at least partially say that SOC was at least partial responsible for about a 15% jump in the number of people who see this site this year.

Holy shit...we don't get record days by post count for the draft anymore due to the fact that it's split over three days now, but our active user count for the past three days has been off the charts. Prior to this week, the record was somewhere around 1250 in a day. We hit 1672 on Thursday and 1324 on Friday.
That's probably mostly artificially driven by the fact that we turned off guest access (forcing people to log in), but still.

Yesterday was still high (1221), but wasn't anything too crazy in terms of breaking records. I don't entirely know what the deal is these days with it locking up from time to time. Searching is obviously a major culprit, but that was disabled the entire draft, and we still had slowdowns. Hopefully the new version of vBulletin is better at handling large forums like ours once AustinChief eventually gets it installed.

OK, here's the basic stats stuff. We're currently on a near-identical trajectory in terms of daily posts as we were in 2009. Apparently regime changes spur a lot of discussion.
http://i.imgur.com/REyKQ5t.png
What I think is perhaps more interesting (as alluded to above) is that the number of people logging in every day is MUCH higher this year than it has been in the past. Of course, it will regress to the mean a bit as the offseason wears on without a lot to talk about, but it's still a pretty striking difference.
