Cops Say Jackson Went On Rampage

Posted Jul 15th 2008 6:00PM by TMZ Staff

Former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton "Rampage" Jackson got busted just minutes ago, and is currently in custody on the way to the clink, but not before he was ordering on the ground, cops nearby with guns drawn.

Law enforcement sources tell us, Rampage was in a car crash near Newport Beach (that's near Laguna Beach in the O.C.) and then split the scene. Cops gave chase and eventually caught up and charged him with felony hit and run and felony evading arrest.

Here's the deal about the dumbest hit and run ever. Notice the truck he tried evading police in -- the one with the giant picture of him plastered on the side!

We're told there could be additional charges. No word yet on whether Rampage resisted arrest.

Bad week. He got his ass handed to him last week (courtesy of Forrest Griffin) and just got it handed to him again.

I've always liked Rampage, but the picture on the side of the truck really cracks me up. He must have been seriously messed up to think running was a good idea.

Quinton Jackson arrested in California

By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports 1 hour, 5 minutes ago

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was arrested following a traffic accident Tuesday in Newport Beach, Calif., TMZ.com reported. TMZ has photos of Jackson on its website lying face down on the street behind his pickup as a police officer has his gun drawn and is pointing it at him.

The public information officer for the Newport Beach Police did not immediately return calls. UFC president Dana White declined comment. Jackson’s manager/trainer, Juanito Ibarra, also did not phone calls.

According to TMZ, Jackson, 29, was involved in an accident and attempted to leave the scene. The website, which covers celebrity encounters with the police, reported that Jackson was charged with felony hit and run and felony evading arrest.

That could not be independently confirmed.

However, photos on the site show Jackson lying face down on the ground immediately behind his truck, a 2008 Ford F-350 Turbo Diesel which has his UFC promotional photo on the side.

Jackson won the UFC light heavyweight title by knocking out Chuck Liddell at UFC 71 on May 26, 2007. After a successful defense against Dan Henderson on Sept. 5, Jackson lost the belt to Forrest Griffin on a controversial decision at UFC 86 on July 5 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

White flew to Orange County upon learning of the arrest and said he was driving to the county jail to post bail for Jackson.

It's on SI now... and ESPN.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson was arrested Tuesday in Costa Mesa, Calif., following a short pursuit that left debris and damaged cars in its wake.

Jackson, who relinquished his UFC belt on July 5 by unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin, plowed a lifted camouflage-painted 2008 Ford F-250 pick-up truck, complete with his image emblazoned on rear driver- and passenger-side doors, into at least one car, according to Costa Mesa Police. Jackson is also believed to have been involved in at least two separate collisions while driving on the highway.

A Costa Mesa patrol officer attempted to pull Jackson over after he was seen weaving in and out of traffic with a flat front left tire, according to a release issued by the Costa Mesa Police Department. Jackson, 30, continued driving to avoid being stopped. Losing control of the truck, Jackson drove up onto a sidewalk. He continued on, colliding with a vehicle in an intersection and running several red lights.

Eventually, the truck came to a stop and Jackson, originally of Memphis, Tenn., was arrested without incident at gunpoint. Photos of the arrest were published on TMZ.com. He was transported to Costa Mesa City Jail where he was booked on charges of felony evading, reckless driving and hit-and-run. Jackson was sent to Orange County Jail, where he is being held lieu of a $25,000 bail.

Jackson's trainer, Juanito Ibarra, did not immediately return phone calls from SI.com.

Just a hunch, but I'm going to say drugs or alcohol was involved.

I really hope they don't find drugs in the truck or something.

Turns out, if local news had run the Rampage Jackson car chase live, it could have gotten Super Bowl ratings because it was one of the craziest chases on record, causing pedestrians to "flee for their lives."

As TMZ first reported, the just-defeated UFC champ was busted this afternoon for alleged felony hit and run. Now we have the details -- and they're insane! Rampage was on the 55 Freeway in the O.C., hit two cars and got off the freeway. The chase was on.

Rampage then began driving on the center divider. But it gets worse. According to the police report, Jackson then drove on the sidewalk, "causing pedestrians to flee for their lives." He started driving the wrong way on a crowded street, colliding with yet another car in an intersection. As he continued on, running several red lights, his tire disintegrated and he began driving on the rim.

Rampage eventually got to the exclusive Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, where he again drove on the sidewalk, "causing pedestrians to flee in terror."

Eventually, his car came to a stop and he was taken into custody at gunpoint. Cops took him to the Orange County Jail, but they determined he was "medically unfit" to be booked. Cops won't say if he was high.

Rampage is currently in an O.C. hospital.

The more I think about this deal, the more it bums me out. I didn't follow Rampage in Pride, but I've become a big fan.

Hell, he had a shot to play B.A. in an A-Team movie. (And I thought he'd be perfect.)

At this point I'm just worried about the dude. He never gave any impression that he'd pull anything like this. I'm sure the story will come out...

Whatever it is, clearly the guy has some very serious issues. I'm saddened by it. He always struck me as a fun loving, happy-go-lucky guy.

Jesse Taylor breaks a window and bothers some prostitutes in a Fertita casino. Temporarily kicked out of the UFC and misses his shot for a contract.

Rampage goes on what sounds like a drug-induced high speed chase and is arrested for a felony. Bailed out by Dana for $25k.

Way to stick to your guns there Dana.

Does this mean the old Japanese chick chasin, coke snortin Rampage is back from before he found Christ? All kidding aside, I hope he gets his life sorted out.

They've known each other for awhile. He was bailing him out as a friend I would imagine. If it is the case that he was in fact on a whacked out spree like you surmise, then I'm sure Dana the boss will fire him. You can bank on it. Hell the light heavyweight division for the UFC is about the deepest division in all of MMA, I'm sure Dana could afford to let him go.
