Chiefs Suspend Contract Talks With DT Glenn Dorsey

The Chiefs have opted to suspend contract talks with top pick DT Glenn Dorsey because agent Joel Segal wants to wait for more picks to sign before doing a deal. “Our comment to Glenn Dorsey’s agent was: Look it, since you don’t want to negotiate, we’re going to go to camp and get started,” G.M. Carl Peterson said. "When you want to negotiate, you know how to reach us, so give me a phone call.” When it comes to negotiating first-round contracts, Segal’s reputation is to wait for the player drafted in front of and behind his client to agree to terms. Segal then does a deal that falls between the two packages.

From a business perspective, you are right. I guess I should be happy that everyone else is signed (except for the injured 7th rounder ...) ... hopefully Dorsey's absence won't hurt too bad.

So tell me why Dorsey has even hired an agent? Is it so that he can let everybody else around the league do all the work, and he can get his 15% anyway?? If i were Dorsey, I'd fire his ass right not, and negotiate a deal myself.

That would be good, but it's probably like trying to be your own lawyer.

I'm of the opinion that first round draft picks all should be capped at a determined contract for the first year or first two years to give them a chance to prove themselves, then get an agent and negotiate what they have earned. Getting multimillion dollar deals out of college is not going to help the life of the league. With the money form AB gone, where will the big bucks come from in the future?

Dammit Carl!! :cuss:

huh, wait, what?!

We have ALL picks signed except one who's agent is being a dick? You mean this ISN"T Carl's fault?

Personally, I think everyone going off on Carl's "reasonable negotiating tactics" (thanks Tribal :) ) ought to be in here slamming the shit out of Segal. Carl got the job done for once, and because of that, Segal is a MASSIVE prick for forcing a hold out.

Not entirely unusual though - QBs get paid more. Just look at Ryan's deal at #3. However I'm sure plenty of Flacco's $30 million is at the back end so if he flops they'll never pay it.

Per Adam Schefter, it’s a five-year, $50 million deal with $21 million guaranteed

Not really. All that matters is the guaranteed money. That is in line with the slotting. Escalators and 5th year salaries can often be changed and/or voided.

I also believe that the seventh pick is injured and wont sign until he gets better. so this might be a long hold out. I also agree that the NFL should put a cap on for rookies and maybe second year players. look at how many 1st. round bust that have been in the NFL the 10 years. If I was a GM I might be a little hesitant to give a rookie that high of a salary not knowing what they are capable of as well.

Looks pretty well defined now, with Gholston signed. Give him a 5yr, $55 mil contract with $24 mil guaranteed and get it done. It fits the slotting.

So if McFadden and Gholston are now signed, WTF is the hold up? It takes about 5 seconds to find the median between those two deals.

Offer 6 year, $60 mill w/ $24 mill guaranteed. Done.

The whole thing probably went down like this.

Segal: Let's get this deal done. My client wants 5yrs, $70mil with $30 mil guaranteed
Carl: How about 6yrs, $42mil, with $12 mil guaranteed.
Segal: I think we will wait for the slots to show you my client is worth more.
Carl to the press: Segal won't negotiate

Carl's strategy in this case is brilliant. We can learn a lot from Carl. In fact I've decided to suspend talks with an ex-girlfriend I haven't seen in 15 years.

WHEN PRICKS COLLIDE!!!!

When Pricks Collide

What happens when the hermaphroditic asshole prick who thinks he is irresistible, meets an immoveable male prick? Celestial observers near River Falls, Wisconsin and Kansas City, Missouri may have a chance at a once in a decade spectacle unfolding in the unseen world of electromagnetic signals, and big time sports contract negotiations surrounding them.

The hermaphroditic asshole prick who thinks he is irresistible, or h.a.p.i., is one of the rarest and most dangerous of all pricks. First of all, it is a hermaphrodite, meaning it can breed with men, women, itself, and barring that the local professional football coach. (Herman Edwards, who is reportedly fond of hermaphrodites)

The h.a.p.i. in this case is none other than Carl Peterson, vice president of football operations, (and some say general manager) of the Kansas City Chiefs. The last time he threatened to collide (the scientific term for mating pricks) He ended up laying a t.u.r.d. named Ryan Sims. (Totally Unresponsible Reach on Defense), The t.u.r.d. ended up getting smeared all over the field in his first season.

A few years prior to that incident, Peterson collided with the agent for rookie offensive lineman John Tait. Tait played out his rookie contract and then fled to Chicago, his asshole intact. Few could argue that the timing of Peterson's desire to mate with another prick, significantly undermined what was one of the most respected offensive lines in the modern era.

The immoveable prick in this celestial coupling is the agent for first round pick, Glenn Dorsey. Immovable pricks are much more common than the h.a.p.i., they frequent the right hand lane on the highway, usually doing well under the posted speed limit. They usually work as loan officers, in and around government agencies, as police, municipal court judges, and occasionally sit in with your favorite band, taking solo after solo, talking on the mic too much, and lauching into tunes without telling the band what he's about to play. The one way to move an immoveable prick is money, and lots of it. That is what makes this so puzzling.

Peterson is willing to go "balls to the wall", when his team really needs Dorsey in camp on time. The Chiefs have plenty of space to get a deal done, and the taste of Ryan Sims' ass, is still fresh in Peterson's mouth. If Dorsey gets to camp really late, is out of shape, or gets hurt, Clark Hunt may actually call the exterminator to rid K.C. of it's hermaphroditic prick problem.

That's no way for an agent to "talk". Good God, what if all agents did that for their clients? Nobody but the first and last picks would be signed

This one is not on Carl

When it comes to negotiating first-round contracts, Segal’s reputation is to wait for the player drafted in front of and behind his client to agree to terms. Segal then does a deal that falls between the two packages.

Gholston has signed already, so WTF?

I don't see this being done any time soon, unless Dorsey steps up and tells him to make the deal. Segal won't even talk to Carl until 7 and 8 are signed and those agents are not going to sign until we do. This is a cluster ****!!!

I'd imagine Dorsey wants 5 years and KC wants 6 years. McFadden got 6, but Gholston got 5.

DING DING DING. We have a winner! Expect a protracted pissing match over the length of the deal.

If the chart is being updated here then per ESPN:

Ryan Clady's five-year, $14.75 million deal with the Denver Broncos that could max out at $17.3 million. The deal includes $11.415 million in guarantees.

Attention Planet Capologists!!! I am officially requesting your expertisal and knowledgism!!! Why would Dorsey prefer a 5 year contract as opposed to a 6 year deal? The guaranteed money would be less in a 5 year deal, would it not?

Get to the second contract sooner. Because one can make it rain for only so long with one signing bonus.

Odd.

I really think this is the first year I just don't care. Sign or don't. Hold out and enjoy being a beat-up Sims chasing your carrer around the NFL. Showing up to even the presason on only your NCAA accomplishments is a proven avenue for success and holding out with Carl only jinxs YOU.

Carl is done. As far as most fans are concerned he's as good as a lame duck.

He's always had bad luck with the 1's. But his 1's also always seem to have bad luck.

I don't care how good you are sitting on your @$$ waiting for your lottery ticket to cash is always a bad idea. If I'm Dorsey I'm looking for ways to break from the existing mojo surrounding 1 Arrowhead, not discovering new ways to perpetuate it...

Guaranteed money is almost always slotted and not dependent on the # of years.

Thanks, Mr. DeezNutz. That sounds reasonable, but I'm still somewhat confused, here.

Let's say that (just for this conversation's sake), in a 5 year deal, the guaranteed money is 30 million and, in a 6 year deal, the guarantee is 35 million. Are you saying that, typically, the signing bonus is greater than the difference in the guaranteed payments? In this case, 5 rocks?

Ah ... You posted that just as I was writing my last, ignorant question. Thanks, Mr. Chiefnj2. It makes sense, now. Obviously, if the guaranteed payments are not significantly different, it's all about the signing bonus and the contract term becomes very important. I think it's odd, though, that the guarantee would be no different between a 5 and 6 year contract.

Because the cap and salaries go up exponentially every year.
That's the reason T.O. keeps signing these contracts every other year because of the signing bonus/ fo' show money.
So let's say he get's
5 mill per year over 6 years when 5 years from now contracts will have gotten out of hand and he can get 10 mill/year.
He's losing 5 mill plus we all know how long NFL players last in this league.

It is kind of odd, but that's the way it has evolved. The Falcons initially through a monkey wrench in the works by paying Ryan more than J. Long but McFadden jumped back in and leveled the field.

The last year or years of the contract are often voidable anyway and have unrealistic base salaries that will never be paid. The player will either be released or the contract reworked. For instance, last year Segal represented Levi the #5 pick and he signed a 6 year deal worth 62 million - more than the #4 this year. But, realistically it is monopoly money. It makes the deal look good on paper.

It wouldn't surprise me if both Carl and Segal were waiting for #7 to see if that player will accept a 5 or 6 year deal.

This year so far:
Pk Player Pos. Team Status Contract
1. Jake Long OT Miami Signed 5 years, $57.5 million ($30M guaranteed)
2. Chris Long DE St. Louis Signed 6 years, $56.5 million ($29M guaranteed)
3. Matt Ryan QB Atlanta Signed 6 years, $72 million ($34M guaranteed)
4. Darren McFadden RB Oakland Signed 6 years, $60 million ($26M guaranteed)
5. Glenn Dorsey DT Kansas City Unsigned
6. Vernon Gholston DE N.Y. Jets Signed 5 years, $50 million ($21M guaranteed)

Wow. Based on that list, Mr. Chiefnj2, there appears to be very little logic associated with these deals. For example, Jake Long's guarantee is more than Chris Long's and his contract term is 1 year less. I suppose the player's position is also a factor, but still ...

Clearly, my efforts to understand the rationalle behind the contract term and the guaranteed dollars is pointless because there really isn't one. Your point, Mr. wutamess, is also well taken. I hadn't considered contract inflation as one of the reasons a player would prefer a shorter term. Still, I suppose that tactic could also work the other way around should the player's performance decline while the first deal was still in place.

Thanks for your help, gentlemen.
