Uh, that's terrible for McCain, Jake. I don't know why you posted this.

McCain can only get 2% more than Bush and he's a war hero?

I look at this way... McCain is getting 2% more than Bush after 3 more years of a war that "isn't popular".... if the troops really supported Obama... we would see McCain getting less than Bush.

A 3% swing will alter your conclusion that dramatically?

With nothing at all to back me up I'd say those numbers aren't very good for McCain. Seems like he'd do better there.

Veterans:
Bush: 54%
Kerry: 40%

Bush was running against a war veteran.

McCain should be drumming Obama.

Please refersh me on how a 19% spread is not a "drumming"?

The military is Republican turf and you have a war veteran running against a Democrat with zero service. McCain should be up 2-to-1 easily.

Just like if Obama only won 70% of the black vote.

Placing the bar where it should be. Jake posted this poll as if it was something really positive for McCain. I'm wondering what he thinks the poll should look like.

It would be interesting to see a more specific demographic breakdown. What percentage of the military is African American? What percentage of the vets. surveyed were African American? I really don't know...Suppose I could Google, but I'm thinking as I type...

I would imagine that Obama's strong polling in the African-American community might not be affected by military or non-military status, and thus it might indeed be that these are strong numbers for McCain. On the other hand, I don't know.

Edit: Perhaps a moot point per Boston.com (?--Whatever. It's something, though somewhat dated.):
"Despite the sharp decline in enlistments, the percentage of blacks in the military still slightly exceeds that of the general population: 14.5 percent in the military, as of 2005, versus 12.8 percent in the US population."

Was this a representative population of all veterans? Did it exclude current military personnel?
