What type of person will be most successful at a job like that? Which business skills are most important? What are your biggest challenges day to day?

One who can clean their butthole with a guests toothbrush is certainly off to a good start.

A big plus if you know how to install tiny cameras above the showers, or in other hidden places so the staff can watch the guests do it.

Probably depends a lot on which hotel one works at. My old roommate was a manager at the Hyatt for many years, he was a real weirdo but could at least assume a professional demeanor when needed and act the part of a "semi-important cog in the corporate machine" when he wanted to.

As to important skills, I would say the ability to market your value to those above you (you will need to be fluent in corporate speak) while still maintaining some kind of connection with your staff. *NOTE- you don't have to be everybody's friend but you do need some understanding between you and the help*
