View Full Version : Chiefs Does anyone think positive about the Chiefs?

RibKing67

I am bothered by all the negitivity surrounding the Chiefs this year. I am either the largest homer around or stupid or both:doh!:..... I know both right?

In all that I have seen with the new players in the last 2 drafts I hold out that while we may not win the division or go to the bowl we have a chance to have a .500+ season. Going thru the schedule I see it like this.

1. L-NE 9. L-SD
2. W-OAK 10. L-NO
3. W-ATL 11. W-BUF
4. W-DEN 12. L-OAK 8W -8L
5. L-CAR 13. L-DEN
6. L-TEN 14. L-SD
7 W-NYJ 15. W-MIA
8. W-TB 16. W-CIN

I do not think that we will be that bad. I think everyone is pissed at:cuss: King Carl :cuss:and rightfully so but lets not quit being fans and give up on a season that has not started yet!!

And let me go on record as saying that I am pulling for Brodie to come out and do well so most of the people on this site will have to eat crow.

Anyone else out there have the same thoughts?

Generally in the early stages of rebuilding it's best to have tempered expectations that way no one blows a gasket when the team isn't very good...

Firstly I think expecting them to win more than 1 road game is asking alot....secondly I have Buffalo in the playoffs so um I highly doubt they're winning that one.

I'm with you, i like thinking positive. we have made some good improvements, but is it enough? That depends on the players getting on the same page and believing in each other and the system.

Chan calling better plays than Solari, Herm game management improving, the D rising up and believing in the O and getting over the loss of allen. Anything can happen. We could surprise people, I know we may not, but this is why I love this sport and enjoy watching the seasons. Anything can happen and often times what is not expected happens too.

Yes. And I hate the overall negativity, too.

I don't think we'll win many games, and I'm not hyping myself up hoping that we will. But I would damn sure love it if we did. I don't get that impression from numerous others. Shame, really. Life is so depressing for them that they can't even enjoy their favorite sports team.

I'm positive that the Chiefs have finally headed in the right direction after all these years.

I don't think that translates into many wins this year, but I have high hopes for the future.

I know I'll have more fun watching this team this year, in spite of the losses, than I have for a long time.

Sooo because you have them going to the playoffs that is why we cant beat them? Can we beat any playoff team you have or just Buffalo? And would you not ask alot of players out there busting hump for alot of $$$?? I would so I do ask for a couple or few road wins.

This is a unique situation for me. Last year, I thought to myself that I had no high expectations for the season, or the previous one, for that matter, but somehow, during the course of the Chiefs sneaking in to the playoffs, and a whole lot of players back from that , my no expectation level somehow became a wanting-to-throw-something-at- the-TV.
Ain't gonna happen this season. I'm going to sit back and enjoy every good thing this young team accomplishes, grimace a little bit at every f**kup, and hope they ride the learning curve on to better things.

NAH!!! I'm getting all my non-TV-threatening projectiles ready for game 1...

Young teams make mistakes...this team struggled to win on the road when it was a veteran team that wasn't bad...

And no I don't expect the Chiefs to beat any playoff teams...there are alot of holes that can be exploited and alot of inexperience, they're going the right way but I don't expect to see alot of results this year.

I think the majority just has low expectations, not hateful negativity. Most people seem okay with the idea of sucking this season, and are obviously open to better things if it happens. These threads are the same every year, so you're not alone... there will always be the eternal optimist camp, the eternal pessimist camp, and several realistic people in between. ;)

The only negativity I bring to the table is surrounding Herm. If we end up being better than advertised, I have little to no faith that he'll play to win when it comes down to the final quarter. Will he ever learn from games like the Colts last year? That said, it's not like there's a ton of pressure on him this year... anything more than 4-6 wins will be a pleasant surprise.

There's very little difference between 4 and 8 wins... I don't care about almost making the playoffs or making the playoffs. I care about winning playoff games, and that isn't going to happen this year, which is fine.

The difference in winning and losing many weeks is very small.....2-3 rookie mistakes and you just lost by 14 points...

That's why in the past when we were bad it was 7-9 we didn't have any guys out there making rookie mistakes we were an old team, I don't think some people are really ready for what having alot of young players means.

Without a QB, stable OL, or competent coaching staff, what's to be excited about? On top of that the megaprick King Carl still reigns supreme from his wideload throne.

The draft was great and all players are signed (unbelievable), but this will still be no better than a 6-10 season for the reasons listed above.

IMO, a 6-10 season would be a success...

60-70% of this roster is going to be composed of guys with less than 2 years in the league.

Young athletic players do make mistakes but they can recover to prevent a TD sometimes. In almost all player changes this offseason the difference in athletic ability is very significant from old to new. I'm hoping/feeling that most of the mistakes made will be offset by plays made that could have never been done by the outgoing players. I don't expect 9-10 wins but I do see 6-8 as very possible.

We definitely have the TALENT to be a contender, but we just don't have the experience. We'll have a lot of games that we play well for the most part, but a couple of rookie mistakes will cost us. I'm thinking we'll win between 4 and 6 this year.

That being said, I'm actually pretty excited about the season. It's been a while since we've had a young team that's just fun to watch. My hope is that there will be glimpses into future greatness here and there from some of our young players, but we'll have to see.

Certainly the drafts of the last two years have shored up some positions such as DT, but our season last year plus the loss of Allen have created some other holes we just haven't had time to fix. The oline is going to have three untested players plus one coming off injury moving to a new position. Cornerback remains a weakness along with placekicker. We are also still unsure about the QB that we put on the field, perhaps looming larger because of the voids in the oline. We gave up on some of our young wide receiver talent with no one in the wings to try to replace even their minimal contributions. This team is going to have big trouble scoring points even if Herm's conservativeness is offset by a new OC.

Anyone else out there have the same thoughts?

so let me get this straight, because I don't have a rosey outlook for the Chiefs this year I am a bad fan or I quit being a fan? WTF?

i think you're supposed to think we're super bowl bound every year. i'm excited every year and in the back of my head think we can do something. but being realistic 6-10 is more like it. i do think we're on the right track though. providing this draft is as good as it looks, another good one next year, and 09 could be entertaining.

We're going 5-11 this year. If Brodie plays well and both our lines gel, we might be looking at 7-9; but that's a huge IF.

Without a QB, stable OL, or competent coaching staff, what's to be excited about?

I have to agree...One needs HOF level talent to overcome the anemic coaching staff this club has. With Marty II at the helm, the best KC can hope for is .500 -- Im just hoping the team wins prior to October.

I'm as excited for this season as any in recent memory.

We have a team full of fresh young talent. Anyone who underperforms can be cut at little to no cost and the money is there to sign upgrades the following year.

The few vets we have are dependable probowlers (Surtain, LJ, Waters, Gonzo, etc.)

It didn't take Green Bay long and it doesn't have to take us long either...

Um CB's and RB's can be done in a snap, especially RB, in this day an age an RB still being remotely productive into his 30's and on a second contract are rare..

Thanks to the contract they'll have to try to milk 2 more years out of LJ but I doubt he'll remotely resemble the player he was.

I just think some people forget for a RB LJ is an old player with so much mileage the tread on his tires is nearly bald. Here's the comparison some people will say he hasn't played that much all that, what the Chiefs did to him 2 years ago would be like taking a car with not that much mileage and treating it horribly burning on the clutch just doing everything you aren't suppose to then you wonder why he now is in worse shape than cars older..

I'm very positive, Mr. RibKing67. I like the idea of stacking the roster with young legs and trying to build pro-bowlers from scratch rather than scratching them out of the retirement heap.

I'd feel much more positive if we had a head coach I had confidence in. Herm is still listed as unproven in my Book of Possible Horrifying Turds. Perhaps he has what it takes ... I hope so. That said, I figure we may win 4 or 5 games this year based on our schedule. Any more would mean that our young players have both talent and brains. Then again, fewer wins isn't terrible because our draft position improves as this year's crop of rookies gain a valuable season of experience. So, the way I see it, no matter how this year goes, it's a win/win. I think that's pretty positive.

For some, yeah.

But they do have a point. The Chiefs have failed in the draft, FA, and in hiring coaches many times over the years.

Today is bright and sunny but one (as a Chiefs fan) has been conditioned to know that right after the sunshine comes the inevitable thunderstorm of failue.

Cowboys, Pats, Steelers, and Giants fans are all cocky and mouthy. They all have a tradition of success.

Jets, Chiefs, Eagles, and Browns fans are all cynical and dog their own team more than any rival fan.

Why do you think that is?

Fail the same way Pennington did under Herm?

Averaged a 66% completion percentage, 2644 yards, 17 TD's/9INT's in 12.6 games per season.

I suspect Clark thinks the same thing I do about Herm.

He's the perfect rehab coach. He's great with the players, he's great at evaluating players, he's great scouting FA's.

His gameplanning and ability to adjust to the evolving game at hand suck.

Herm builds the team and the next HC coaches them.

Clark is no different than Lamar. He's cerebral. He doesn't think short term. But where people blame Lamar is getting complacent after his success. Clark hasn't had that. He's taken over a team and a name and tradition and feels he has to earn it.

Herm is perfect for the rebuild and Carl has been emasculated enough to comply.

New direction.

A very young, talented team with very few reaches.

Building a talented young line both offensively and defensively.

A very young backfield and wide-receiver set.

A very young and aggressive defensive backfield.

And a young owner who seems to be more involved with the team and steering it in the right direction.

I don't get why people believe that perception of Herm. Yes, he's done a good job with his first round picks, but other than that - I don't see it.

The free agents he's brought in haven't done much and are already gone or most people want them replaced - Nap Harris, Edwards, Reed, Boone, Law, Terry, Turley, McIntosh, Drummond.

People are hoping his draft picks get replaced by new draft picks this year - Morgan over Pollard, Franklin over Webb.

I'm extremely positive about the team this year, as I think we have a lot of exciting young talent on both sides and we're FINALLY heading in the right direction by going with a true rebuilding effort.

However, that doesn't mean I am positive that we will make the playoffs this year. I expect to see some solid play at times, but I also expect to see many mistakes that young players typically make.

Overall, should be a fun team to watch if you are fine with not winning a ton of games and instead focusing on moving in the right direction.

On the subject of Herm's ability to scout, draft, and develop talent, I'm not so sure there is much demonstrable proof of this. Perhaps there is and it is a skill set with which I am merely unfamiliar. For example, I honestly don't know how much decision-making input he had in Tampa Bay on the subject. Rather, it seems to me that this is a kind of ... mythology that has evolved around him because he was a scout in his early career. When it comes to his KC picks, we're still waiting to see what will happen. The decision to go with the League Of Ancients as an oline last year doesn't speak well of his ability to evaluate a lineman, that's for sure.

Still, starting young players at key positions is something pretty new for Chiefs fans. That, in and of itself, makes for a more interesting season for a lot of us. I don't believe for a minute that, in the NFL, any team can seriously compete for the playoffs without experience at the skill positions. But that doesn't mean they don't make the effort.

What I want to see this year are the guys fighting and scrapping to the last whistle regardless of the score. If I see that, I'll be happy and extremely positive about our future. The problem is, Herm's tendency to pull back, play conservatively, and wait for the other team to make a mistake runs counter to my hopes. We shall see.

I am positive that we missed on so many draft pics it is going to be a 5-10 year plan to rebuild this thing.

Which of the players currently on the roster drafted during Herms tenure are you saying they "missed" on?

I think he's referring to the draft drought that has essentially lasted from DT until the last couple of years. At least, that's how I read it, Mr. Chief Faithful.

I heard on KK today that the chiefs only have 7 or 8 running plays that they are going to run and lots of play action. The playbook is going to be smaller. This is good news it should keep us in the game, keep penalty's down, help us pound the rock and play defense.

Yes. And I hate the overall negativity, too.

I don't think we'll win many games, and I'm not hyping myself up hoping that we will. But I would damn sure love it if we did. I don't get that impression from numerous others. Shame, really. Life is so depressing for them that they can't even enjoy their favorite sports team.

oh, I love my chiefs. I wouldn't be wasting my cash on chiefs gear if I didn't. however, the only real enjoyment I'll get is knowing that there's a chance that their suckage this year MAY lead to future success. that's big in my eyes.

Most teams only have a 5-10 running plays.

What differentiates them is the formation, package, etc they are run from.

I saw where Herm is trying to get the ball in his play makers hands more they have a play where LJ takes it right then hands the ball off to bowe coming the other way. Using bowe's great skills the play is designed for bowe to chew up as much clock then slide in the middle of the field to set up a field goal or punt.

A tale of two teams
profootball weekly

Chiefs, Dolphins heading in opposite directions
By Matt Sohn (msohn@pfwmedia.com)
July 28, 2008

Given everything that’s transpired over the offseason, you would think that the vibes emanating out of Kansas City and Miami these days would be similar. Both the Chiefs and the Dolphins took almost identical approaches to rebuilding their clubs, each deciding that an influx of young, fresh faces would be needed in the hopes of reversing their fortunes.

Each of them started by cutting a host of aging stalwarts, with the Chiefs bidding farewell to the likes of Ty Law and Eddie Kennison, just as the Dolphins asked Trent Green and Keith Traylor to turn in their playbooks. They each stockpiled the draft picks in April and aimed first to rebuild in the trenches — both teams’ top two picks were spent on linemen. Both avoided shelling out gobs of cash to high-priced free agents. And, perhaps most strikingly, each traded away their star defensive end, with the Chiefs sending Jared Allen up to Minnesota and the Fins shipping Jason Taylor up to the District.

Yet despite all the similarities the teams share, they are hardly on equal footing when it comes to the future. In Miami, optimism has been restored, whereas in Kansas City, the outlook is bleaker than it has ever been.

Say what you will about a Chiefs draft class that appears strong on paper, it hardly makes up for a litany of poor decisions, the most glaring of which was to split with Allen. Simply put, Allen’s the best defensive lineman in the league today and is only now entering the prime of his career. Yet, because of the Chiefs’ stubborn refusal to offer him the type of long-term deal a player of his caliber deserves, they set themselves back immeasurably. Perhaps it’s somewhat justifiable to say that the club was scared off by his two DUI arrests, but he nevertheless represents a stock with far too high a ceiling not to have invested in him. With Taylor, on the other hand, the Dolphins received second- and sixth-round picks for a player who probably has one more season left in the tank.

Both Miami and Kansas City claim that they’re building for the future, but Miami’s the only one that’s actually practicing what they preach. The Chiefs are merely overhauling their roster in the hope that new faces translate to more wins.

In either rookie Chad Henne or second-year pro John Beck, the Dolphins have reason to believe that their quarterback of the future is already in place. Both were second-round picks the last two years and have the upside to eventually develop into franchise quarterbacks. The Chiefs have Brodie Croyle. In his six career starts, Croyle has failed to lead the team to victory. Although it may be premature to completely write off a passer entering his third season, there’s enough of a body of work to have serious doubts as to his ability. Yet, instead of grooming a touted youngster in the likelihood Croyle doesn’t pan out, the Chiefs chose to ignore football’s most important position in their offseason bounty.

The derivation of the dichotomy between the future of the franchises is abundantly clear. In Miami, owner Wayne Huizenga pulled off a coup when he lured Bill Parcells away from ESPN to become the club’s executive VP of football operations. Given Parcells’ track record in resurrecting moribund clubs, the fact that he’s already put the Fins on a distinct track for success shouldn’t be surprising. On the other hand, Chiefs president Carl Peterson, who’s been in charge of making the personnel moves for two decades, has demonstrated incompetence time and again in sustaining success.

The irony in all this is that, if anything, the roles of the Dolphins and Chiefs should be reversed. In Miami, Huizenga is nearing the end of his ownership, yet he is setting owner-in-waiting Stephen Ross up well by appointing Parcells to guide the team. Meanwhile, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is just beginning his tenure after taking over control of the team from his father — the late, great Lamar Hunt — yet is stuck in neutral for as long as Peterson remains the personnel chief.

The Dolphins and Chiefs. Two teams coming off a season full of embarrassment. Yet only one seems motivated to escape their cellar.

One of the biggest problems in today's culture is that most people have come to believe that they appear more intelligent if and when they exhibit cynicism. We lost Jared but we did get something for him. And now we can go in this season with no expectations and watch this young team grow. As MUCH as I'd LOVE for the Chiefs to do a Jets-type turnaround (4-12 in 2005 to 10-6 in 2006), I'm not counting on it.

I do, however, feel that the Chiefs have made positive steps in the right direction. But in a weird way, it feels like 1988 instead of 1989.

I hope I'm wrong and it's 1990 (with a playoff win!).

But regardless, I'll watch every game, every snap and read every recap.

I'll not miss one second, preseason or regular season of Chiefs football.

Yes it is depressing, Thats why everyone was so giddy when DV left, they figured Clark would nut up and remove Carl. Give us new life and a fresh outlook on the future.

Well he didnt, Carl hired a career loser as a coach and now we are stuck on the less than mediocrity train for another term. We know we wont be any good, we know that playoff victories and Superbowls will not happen with this coaching staff. So all we can hope for is 2010. (I have to say stuff like that, Mr. JASONSAUTO. By pretending to be an a-hole primo instead of the warm hearted, loyal-to-the-end-through-good-and-bad-till-death-do-us-part Chiefs fan I truly am, I deflect tons of criticism and endless, vile, unwarranted attacks by the Planet meanies and bad fans. Like this next part, for example, which I don't really mean, of course.)

Now straighten yourself up there, young N00b (sp?) and fly right or we'll have to kick your ass all the way up to the North Star and for centuries sailors will be plotting their course by your anus.

(And, honestly, I think the best way to go here is to avoid sticking any vegetable of any kind up your nose. That's probably easier to remember than a list of individual vegetables.)

Don't introduce yourself by calling out everyones fandom then. Not a good way to introduce yourself to these boards. Fans get sick and tired of being told how they should feel.

Most of us are happy with the team's direction at this point, despite the coach and GM. We don't want them to lose, but we are rebuilding. This will be an ugly year record wise. We are prepared for that. We will still call a turd a turd though.

i like to think that the chiefs have the best fans in the nfl, well where the hell are they at?

then why waste your time pretending to be "fans" ...

not drinking kool aid either just feel like real true fans stick through and dont have to be so negative esp.

maybe your collective attitudes about people who actually love the chiefs...

I don't think this place is filled with cynical assholes, but it took me a little while to realize it. When I was in high school and college I was filled with optimism every year and didn't understand why people couldn't be more optimistic. I put my heart into it, and after a while realized it wasn't worth the time, money, frustration, anger, etc. Now I'm MUCH more realistic, and can enjoy the wins like I always have, but get over the losses before an hour after the game is over (except for the Colts game last year.... seriously, what the hell Herm? :cuss: ).

I digress... being all rah-rah doesn't make you a better fan, and telling people they should be rah-rah won't go over well around here. And having realistic expectations doesn't make us cynical assholes, especially since most everyone is fine with sucking this year.

J/K. Damn kid settle down. It's ok if your all excited about our chances at 9-7. Just don't be all surprised, and shook up, when folks don't agree with your projections.

We're in a rebuild. Are you seriously calling out long time Chiefs fans, for being realistic about it.

I seriously think that we will enjoy this season MUCH more than you will.

While you're crying in your hands because we lost, we'll be pumped about flashes of what's to come from our young roster.
