Paying these people off is one of the key reasons things have gotten a little better in Iraq of late. If the money stops flowing, shit's ****ed.

I don't even want to imagine where that money's going.

Might as well keep paying them. We pay banks for f'n up, people who bought houses they cannot afford, Wall Street gets cake deals. I am in support of gambling legislation where we have Senators just cut checks to losers as they walk out of the casino.

Give them a location to meet to collect their checks.

Eliminate them.

The Iraqi government needs to start footing the bill for these militias/"security forces".

This is the way we actually distribute the $300 that each Son of Iraq, all 100,000+ of them. Our soldiers and officials give the money to sheiks who have militants under them. Say a Sheik has 200 men that are loyal to him. We give that sheik $300 x 200 ($60,000) each month. The sheik then distributes that money to his men.

Beyond the problem of paying protection money to these guys, many of whom are criminals and terrorists, there are some other problems with this:

1) Who is the grunt going to be loyal to? Is he going to be loyal to his boss who is the one actually giving him the money, or is he going to be loyal to the Iraqi government/our government?

2) The sheik can siphon off as much money as he wants. He is the middleman, and if he pleases he could keep $50, $100, or $200 of that $300 for himself.

3) There are already many Sons of Iraq threatening to start fighting again if they don't get more money. Sheiks are telling US representatives that they have more men now, and thus need more money. So the hypothetical sheik that had 200 men under him and was getting $300 a month for each of them is now saying he has 350 men, and they each need $300 a month. $300 x 200 ($60,000) a month goes to $300 x 350 ($105,000).

4) There is a new group of Shia militants coming together under the name of "The Sons of Basra." These guys want the same protection money the Sons of Iraq are getting. There are tens of thousands of these guys emerging, and if we actually start handing out cash more and more will pop up.

But let's keep talking about who's worse, Obama or McCain. That'll make it all better. Look at how it's worked to this point.

I don't know why Obama hasn't brought this up when defending his stance against the surge.

Just as I don't know why he didn't bring up that Hillary took big medicine money to shut her up about healthcare when Bill was in office.

Gee, I never thought I'd ever agree with Iowanian.

If it makes you feel better, I never expected you would begin to think rationally either.

Congratulations.

Nice plan fellow Iowegian. A person could cook up a scheme were we get 900 virgins,
free goat cheese and air conditioning then send them some fake notice on how there rich uncle Muhammed left them $5,000 each. Set up the sting for the local land fill.

Then hit the switch...good thinking there oh maharishiiowegian.

I've been thinking a large tent with a sign that suggests free air conditioning and virgin sweat koolaide for insurgets would be a hit.

The Bring-an-insurgent friend "Free video of attacks against the infadel" night would probably be the night to drop the daisy cutter.

I don't know why Obama hasn't brought this up when defending his stance against the surge.I think he mainly wants to brush off the constant focus on it at this point, but yeah, when people entirely attribute the lull in violence in Iraq to the Surge and ignore the whole "genocide that's taken place" and "massive bribes" details, it's pretty silly.

The fact that the media's swallowed McCain's line about how the surge is OBVIOUSLY A HYUUUUUUGE SUCCESS WHY WON'T YOU ADMIT YOU WERE WRONG YOU BIG JERK?!?! is pretty irritating.
