Mizzou opens at No. 7 in coaches poll
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
08/01/2008

The Missouri Tigers, who ended the 2007 football season ranked No. 4 and No. 5 nationally, will open the 2008 season at No. 7 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

It's the highest preseason ranking for Mizzou, which opened the 1969 season at No. 10 in the Associated Press poll. The AP poll will be released in mid-August.

The Big 12 Conference has three top 10 teams in the coaches' poll: Oklahoma, which handed Mizzou both its losses in '07, comes in at No. 4, and Texas starts at No. 10.

Kansas is No. 13 in the poll, and Illinois -- Mizzou's season-opening opponent Aug. 30 at the Edward Jones Dome -- is No. 19.

The coaches rate Georgia as the No. 1 team, with Southern California, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Florida rounding out the top five. Defending national champion LSU is No. 6, and Mizzou is followed by West Virginia, Clemson and Texas.

The Tigers return 17 starters from their 12-2 team that won the Big 12 North title and the 2008 Cotton Bowl. Two among them -- quarterback Chase Daniel and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin -- are considered top Heisman Trophy candidates.

The complete USA Today Coaches poll (rank, team with first-place votes in parentheses, '07 record, voting points and final '07 ranking):

1. Georgia (22) 11-2 . . . 1,438 . . . 3
2. Southern California (14) 11-2 . . . 1,430 . . . 2

And the game is early enough that the losing team won't be impacted near as much as they could be if the game was later, given they would run the table.

The game between the Illini should decide if Mizzou is for real. Personally, I think they lucky and SOFT.

Yeah I said it.

Look, if anyone watched the game vs the Illini last year, you could see that Mizzou got every break in the game. From Illinois' QB getting knocked out in the first half to that hilarious 99 fumble return.

Sorry Mizzou fans but this year you wont be so lucky. I see the Illini beating you guys and your national title hopes crushed in the opening week.

With that being said, my teams are lookin good. I root for my USC boys and Georgia. I hope they are both in the Championship game.

It's not Illegal. It's just typical of bandwagon douche mentality. Mizzou wasn't that good, so you turned your back, and found yourself a team that happened to be the best college football team for that period of time. Yea yeah, I know you lived there, but you lived in Mizzou too, but they weren't good enough for his doucheness.

The defense will be vastly improved. They went back to their old attacking style of defense that they ran back in 03 under Pelini when they finished 11th in total defense. They've got good talent on defense but they just quit on Cosgrove last year because they didn't believe in the system. I hated that read and react shit he ran. In order to game plan for the defense teams will have to go back to the 03 films. The offense will be damn good.
I'm thinking realistically, Nebraska should go 8-4. Anything over that is gravy this year.
