Lucas carted off field after fight with Smith
Updated: August 1, 2008, 12:03 PM

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Carolina Panthers cornerback Ken Lucas was carted off the field with an ice pack above his left eye Friday after a fight with teammate Steve Smith.

The melee came while most starters were on the sidelines during a special teams drill at training camp. It was unclear what provoked the fight. Several players and coach John Fox rushed to both players. Fox tried to separate the two, but it took linebacker Jon Beason to pull Smith off Lucas.

Lucas walked to a tent, holding his head while accompanied by a trainer. Smith was then escorted there by receiver Muhsin Muhammad to talk to Lucas. After being treated for several minutes, the Panthers' starting cornerback walked onto a cart and was taken to the locker room. There was no immediate update on the extent of his injuries.

Smith was kicked out of practice and spent several minutes talking to kicker John Kasay on an adjacent field. He later walked into the locker room while practice continued.

Fox said it hasn't been determined if Smith will be suspended .

"We haven't had much time to talk about it," he said. "It will be dealt with internally."

The coach said he had an extended talk with the team after the workout.

"Any time something like that happens you're obviously disappointed," he said. "It's part of football and you deal with it."

A three-time Pro Bowl pick, Smith was had had trouble controlling his temper in the past. He was suspended for a game in 2002 after punching teammate Anthony Bright during a film session.

Smith last year signed a contract extension through the 2012 season that makes him one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers.

How many of you would be fired if you punched a fellow employee? We lost a guy a couple of years ago for taking a swing at another co-worker. He didn't even land a good punch just kind of a glancing blow.

How many of you work in an environment that demands controlled violence? Ok. How many of you would receive a multi-million dollar severance package? ok.

Yep, ever since the age of about 8 years old these guys are groomed to hurt people. My nephew is the same way and he's 10 years old. Everyone has different tempers some snap faster then others. I dont know how they can blame these guys for losing it once in a while.

I am surprised it doesn't happen more. These guys are the biggest, fastest people on the planet, they are in the nfl no murder people. I think there is going to come a point when someone dies on the field soon not from landing on someone's head but just hitting someone so hard their heart dislodges. Simply put these guys don't give a f about anything but killing other mfers

Was this the Lucas who used to play for Seattle? If so, I remember him getting creamed with a lead pipe outside a Seattle bar by some gang banger.

Guy has bad luck.

wow--Dwayne Jarrett reporting for duty Sir!

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Carolina Panthers have suspended wide receiver Steve Smith two games for his involvement in a training camp fight with cornerback Ken Lucas.

Smith, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, will participate in preseason games and be allowed to practice with the team beginning Monday.

Lucas left the practice field at Wofford College on Friday with ice over his left eye.

Coach John Fox said Lucas has a broken nose.

“What (Smith) did was wrong and we take very serious and he is being punished severely for it,” Fox said.

Lucas did not practice on Saturday at Fan Fest and is listed as day-to-day.

Smith and Lucas were not present Saturday at Bank of America Stadium.

Actually, wouldn't he have to clear waivers?

Someone well before the Cowboys would have put in a claim.
