View Full Version : Link/image restrictions for n00bs

DaFace

GIANT EDIT:

Never mind about the HTML/YouTube thing. After experimenting a bit, I decided it would be too restrictive of our otherwise open posting style to use this plugin. It worked reasonably well, but would probably take a lot to keep up.

Instead, I found a plugin that will restrict the posting of images and URLs by for n00bs. If they try, they'll get this message:

In order to prevent the posting of objectionable material by new users, ChiefsPlanet requires new members to meet certain criteria before posting links or images. We apologize for the inconvenience, but join in on the discussion and you'll be given full privileges in no time!

Until then, please remove links from your message, then you will be able to submit your post.

There's always a chance someone will fly under the radar for a while, then go crazy, but this should cut out all but the very motivated trolls/spammers.

Thanks to all for the feedback. Hopefully this'll eliminate our porn issues :)

The beauty of that format will become apparent with the advent of MyForum in which you select your favorite forums and the posts from there will appear in one forum known as "MyForum". Until that feature comes available the "Show Unread Posts Since Last Visit" is almost as good. The best forums there are probably Food, Wheels, Fitness, Home, and Davy Crocket.

I'll do what I can to get hulu and others working, but it'll be a slow process. You basically have to write a new script for each individual site. Until then, we'll just have got back to the old fashioned way of linking.

There are far more reasons for disabling HTML than avoiding porn, for what it's worth. The further I read into it, the more I realized that it's a pretty big security risk to have them turned on.

I'm actually personally amazed that the answer to that question is "no." HTML and the IMG tag are limited by forum, not usergroup, so there's no easy way to let one group use them without letting everyone.

30 is the point at which all of the other n00b restrictions have always come off (with a couple exceptions), so it makes sense for the most part. If it becomes an issue, we'll consider raising it.

It's not just 30 posts. It's 30 posts and overnight, during which "promotions" occur. So a newly registered account couldn't just go onto some obscure forum, whip out 30 posts and begin posting porn. They'd have to at least wait until overnight. I'd venture 99.99% of trolling idiots out there don't have that kind of foresight and/or patience. It's still a good restriction though 100 would certainly be even more restrictive but then you start cutting into legitimate noobs/lurkers. We have hundreds of lurkers who have been with us for years who don't have 100 posts.

Yeah, if I could I'd just link the restrictions by usergroup. There may still be a way, but I worry more about the latter issue (cutting into legitimate noobs) than the former (spammers with a lot of motivation).
