Fire reported at Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church

TOPEKA | The Topeka Fire Department is investigating a small fire outside of a church whose members protest at soldier’s funerals.

A fence and garage at Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church became engulfed in flames early Saturday, according to the Topeka Capitol-Journal Web site. The fire did not spread to the church building.

Topeka Fire Marshal Greg Bailey said the cause of the fire has not been determined. However, a spokeswoman for the church, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said she believes it was deliberately set.

Members of the church frequently picket military funerals, arguing that the deaths of U.S. troops overseas are part of God’s punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

Bailey said damage is estimated at $10,000.

Re: Civil Rights Hate Crime Complaint vs. Unknown Criminal Arsonist(s)

Dear General Mukasey:
About 12:30 a.m. today (Saturday, August 2, 2008) our church was set afire as two elderly people were asleep therein. There is evidence that hatred of our religion was the motivation, in part at least. Although the fire department acted swiftly, it is extremely prematurely estimated that damage amounted to approximately $20,000 to $30,000. State Fire Investigator James R. (Rusty) Vollintine was on the scene by approximately 1:30 a.m.
Needless to say, we will expect and appreciate it if the United States Department of Justice will promptly enter this case, and entertain this matter as a Federal Civil Rights and Hate Crime violation.
We would also appreciate the cooperation of all other relevant law enforcement agencies, including those named below as copy addressees hereof.

Thank you very much.
Sincerely yours,

My estimates are 2 to 3 times the damages because we have insurance and are Christians.

I hope he acts of God covered in his insurance.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of those nutjobs started the fire themselves. I mean, it was in the garage. Not even close to hurting anyone. They haven't been in the news lately. Pehaps they were starved for attention.

"Our investigation will commence, but our resources are a little thin due to ongoing investigation of a hate group that is protesting outside of funerals honoring Amerca's fallen heros whose lives were taken during our ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you consider this to be a serious problem, you might consider seeking protection from a volunteer group, such as the Patriot Riders."

You guys should quit worrying about the Phelps clan.
God is on it.
He's got your back.

BTW: If he lived in Lawrence instead of Topeka, Frazod would volunteer to set the fire.

What?

It's an ironic spin on the term "volunteer fire department"...in this instance, they're volunteering to start fires rather than extinguish the fires. Got it?

Apparently there are some pretty good comments on the Topeka Capitol Journal site about the fire. One comment swears that ol' Freddie has two grandchildren that have come out of the closet. I for one hope that they're two of many.
