This was a 2-hour show on the National Geographic CHannel last night. I forgot it was on, but had meant to DVR it. Went to bed, and caught most of the 2nd hour.
It was amazing. It basically went into the problems presented by differing interpretations of the Koran, how those divergent interpretations exist, what differing sects believe and why... It also discusses Islam within Saudi Arabia and Iran.
They interviewed people involved in each sect, and some come off looking like crazies, and some come off looking like geniouses. I'm telling you, it was fascinating, and it was informative. Also, in HD it was beautiful, some of the scenes from Jerusalem, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.

I know this technically should go in the media room, but thought it fit better in here.

I watched about the last 45 minutes. Im amazed that the moderate/sane muslim world has not taken back their faith if what was presented is anywhere close to accurate.

I think they touched on that a little, how questioning of the Koran was looked down upon. But, you know, I still haven't figured out how to "take back" Christianity from those I disagree with. I guess for them, to "take back" much of what's wrong, they would have to take over countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran, since the state sponsors a distorted view of their religion. What a great illustration of what can go wrong when government and religion is mixed.

I was surprised to see the Korans that were being produced in Saudi Arabia, with parenthetical notes (as if they were part of the book) that talked about Jews, Christians, tanks guns, etc. Pretty disgusting. In a History of Islam class I took, we talked a lot about how, in Islam's early days, Christians, Jews and Muslims lived together peacefully in Muslim lands, and much of what was discussed in the part of that I saw. It was nice to see more about that, and some of my learning backed up.

To the best of my knowledge, it was very accurate. Especially the segment about the Vahabis.
