Haven't seen this posted. If a repost, deal with it.

Kansas coach Bill Self had his turn Wednesday in what can now officially be called a trend.

Self, who was pursued by his alma mater Oklahoma State after the Jayhawks won the national title in April in San Antonio, signed a new 10-year contract, retroactive to April 1, that will pay him $3 million a year and keep him at the school until March 31, 2018. Kansas released the details of the contract Wednesday.

A year ago, Florida's Billy Donovan won the NCAA national title, turned away a suitor in Kentucky, signed and then rescinded a deal with the Orlando Magic and ultimately signed a six-year, $3.5 million deal with the Gators.

Whoever wins the title in 2009 may be in for a similar deal, too, if this trend continues.

Self's new overall package increases his salary from the current $1,610,600 a year. The contract has a base salary of $229,900, an additional professional services package of $2,270,100 and a retention payment of $500,000 (after taxes) per year, if he remains each year of the contract.

Self's base salary didn't change from the old contract, but the personal services portion was previously $1,155,700 and his retention payment was $225,000.

Kansas was clear in its release that no tuition dollars or state funds were used in the raise, but that the money came from private resources.

Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins told ESPN.com in San Antonio before and after the Jayhawks won the title that he was never worried he would lose Self to Oklahoma State. Wednesday, Perkins issued a statement saying he was "thrilled that Bill will be our coach for years to come. He has done a tremendous job leading the Kansas men's basketball program both on and off the court; there's no one I'd rather have at the helm of the Kansas program."

Self, who wasn't available for comment Wednesday, said in the same statement that he was thankful to the school, president and athletic director for the confidence in him, then added that he "cannot imagine a better place to play, or to coach, than the University of Kansas. My family and I look forward to being part of the Kansas and Lawrence communities for many years to come."

Kansas lost six of its top eight players from last season's title-winning team. Five of the six -- juniors Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers, sophomore Darrell Arthur and seniors Darnell Jackson and Sasha Kaun -- were selected in the two-round NBA draft in June. The Jayhawks will be led by returnees Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich, as well as a stellar seven-player newcomer class.

Bill Self in Lawrence for the next decade. That just brings a smile to my face.

Mainly because you can hear the collective "Aw, ****," from KSU, MU and the rest of the Big 12.

KU has really loosened up the athletic purse strings. Didn't they just spend 30 mil on football facilities.? They are finally getting serious.

Good for KU for keeping one of the best coaches in the country.

Good for Boone Pickens for being able to afford even more windmills.

NO. I wonder what that bitch thinks of Self's contract. Prolly what he was thinking when we had him down 40-12.

For years, I've believed that the ONE school that could pry Calipari away from us would be Kansas.

So, uh, good on you guys. Please keep him. Hopefully, by the time Cal is ready to retire, Kellogg, Barbee, or Pastner will be ready to take over (and Cal will be ready to be AD).

We knew this would work out eventually. It's good to know that they have a deal in place now. Coach Self deserves the raise. Great job, Lew.

Roy is a great coach, no doubt. But Roy is his own worst enemy. His refusal to change during the game has cost him many championships.

No...

Donovan and Gillespie make more than Roy, I think Self is just ahead of Gillespie, now and Donovan is still top dog at just a clip over 3.5 after he resigned after backing out of his contract with The Magic.

What's even cooler is that this is all done with private funds, not money from tuition or the state

Eh, that's a never ending argument. Both are great coaches, IMO. Still, I think Self is a better recruiter. And, of course, only one of these guys brought a title to Kansas with players he recruited. ;)

BTW, Sasha Kaun is an Olympic athlete. Kind of hard to suck and be an Olympian at the same time.

No, I believe their donors spent 30 mil on the athletic facilities and now one of them is bankrupt and can't even provide the money he promised. ROFL

I think Roy is the better coach. Thought I'm happy with Self now that he finally won a NC, but Roy is the better coach. Nothing will change my mind about that.

Just like how Kaun sucks at basketball. No one will ever be able to change my views on that.

I had never seen a Kansas team more prepared for a high-stakes game than KU was against North Carolina in the Final Four. I give credit to Self for getting his players in the right mind-set. They had a business-like attitude that they just wanted to get things done, and I loved seeing that, because so many KU teams under Roy would go into the tourney with a sense of entitlement, and would get tossed by Rhode Island or Arizona. And the fact that KU was able to mount such an epic comeback against Memphis shows again that Self had his team in the right mind-set. A lot of teams would have given up by then. I think that Roy may be better at in-game adjustments and such, but that doesn't make him the better coach overall.
