View Full Version : Chiefs Hello Chad Pennington Good Bye Damon Huard

I think there's about a 99% chance this happens if Favre ends up in New York with the Jets.

Jets | Pennington may be out
Wed, 6 Aug 2008 15:58:40 -0700 Mike Cannizzaro, of the New York Post, reports it is unlikely that New York Jets (http://www.kffl.com/team/27/nfl) QB Chad Pennington (http://www.kffl.com/player/1351/nfl) would remain with the team if the Jets (http://www.kffl.com/team/27/nfl) acquire Green Bay Packers (http://www.kffl.com/team/17/nfl) QB Brett Favre (http://www.kffl.com/player/764/nfl).

This was my thought as well. Would be a mega-upgrade at backup QB for the Chiefs. Thigpen is a stretch as an NFL QB, and Huard cannot operate the offense at a high level. Pennington is a winner and he can teach Croyle so much about how to prepare for games. He can also step in if Croyle turns out to be a turnover machine. I really hope this happens.

Getting Favre would also be great for the Jets, who I expect will have a good year. I still don't understand why the Packers locked the door on Favre in favor of Aaron Rodgers.

Croyle starts every game in 2008 unless he is broken. We HAVE to let the kid develop. None of this, "may the best man win" bullshit, that is absolutely NOT how you develop a QB. The only way a Chiefs backup QB starts in 08 is if Croyle is injured. Period.

When writing about possible landing spots for Chad Pennington last night, I left off the most obvious one.

There is a very good chance Pennington will be a Kansas City Chief sometime today. Pennington and Kansas City coach Herman Edwards have a strong relationship from their time in New York together.
According to a source close to the Chiefs, the team wants Pennington. So don't be shocked if Pennington is playing in Arrowhead Stadium next year.

Chiefs must consider Pennington

<!-- END tabs --> <!-- begin content --> The New York Jets say they'll make a move with quarterback Chad Pennington by 3 this afternoon, now that they have acquired Brett Favre from Green Bay.
Hopefully that move will involve the Chiefs.
I know the Chiefs are committed to Brodie Croyle. I know the Chiefs' offense under Chad Gailey is not the same scheme Pennington ran for Herm Edwards in New York.
And I know Pennington has been injury prone. Playing behind a shaky line in Kansas City is an invitation to the disabled list.
BUT ... Croyle is just as injury prone, if not more so. And when he goes down, I'll take my chances with Pennington over Tyler Thigpen or Damon Huard.
Pennington is a bright guy, will pick up the offense as a backup and though his arm strength is not great, he won't make mistakes.
I know this flies in the face of the youth movement, but Pennington, at 32, is not ancient. He'd be an ideal insurance policy and pretty good mentor for Croyle and Thigpen.

Another thought on Pennington

<!-- END tabs --> <!-- begin content --> The timing of Chad Pennington's availability couldn't be better for the Chiefs. They'll get a nice, long look at Tyler Thigpen in tonight's game against the Bears.
If Thigpen plays poorly, the Chiefs will have a lot more urgency about signing Pennington than if he plays well.
The only way Pennington makes sense to the Chiefs is if they feel Thigpen isn't capable of being a competent number two. As committed as Herm Edwards is to this youth movement, he wants a quarterback capable not just of getting the Chiefs through a game or a season, but one who can get the Chiefs through the next five years.
That's why the Chiefs weren't interested in Brett Favre.

The Word on Chiefs & Pennington (http://www.bobgretz.com/chiefs-football/the-word-on-chiefs-pennington.html)

</th><th>
</th></tr></tbody></table> From Chicago, Illinois
Now that the New York Jets have released Chad Pennington, the quarterback will begin to assess his immediate future.
One spot he will definitely consider is Arrowhead Stadium and the Kansas City Chiefs. If the Chiefs want to be part of the action for Pennington’s future services, they will be; they’ll be a very big part.
Right now, however, they are keeping their mouths shut. From top to bottom, the heirarchy had nothing to say about Pennington as the team stopped at the Chicago Marriott on Michigan Avenue to have a pre-game meal before Thursday night’s game against the Bears.
That silence alone speaks volumes.
There’s no question the Chiefs will investigate the entire situation with Pennington. Those discussions actually began on Wednesday when the internal NFL Grapevine made it clear that the Jets were the leading candidate to get retired/returned QB Brett Favre.
And you can bet those conversations were continued Thursday afternoon when the word came to the Chiefs here in the Windy City that Pennington had officially been released.
Here’s some things to know about Pennington. First, he was drafted by the New York Jets when Bill Parcells was running the show there. Second, the coach who put him in the starting lineup and stuck with him was Herm Edwards. Third, his agent is former Chiefs guard and KC resident Tom Condon.
A lot of what goes on in any business is about relationships and in the case of Pennington, that would seem to narrow the field to two teams: Miami, where Parcells is now the major domo of the Dolphins and Kansas City, where Edwards is rebuilding the Chiefs.
More than likely Pennington’s first hopes will be for a team where even at this late date, he can compete for the starting job. There are not many options there. It could happen in Baltimore, it could happen in Chicago and it could happen in Miami.
There are other teams that need competition for their starter or an experienced backup, places like Detroit, Minnnesota, Green Bay, San Francico and Kansas City.
With the Chiefs, Pennington would not get the chance to compete for the No. 1 job. Edwards and the franchise are committed to Brodie Croyle. But the franchise is determined to have an experienced NFL quarterback on their roster for this season.
Right now, that’s Damon Huard. Pennington is younger than Huard and has more experience playing in the league. He would be an upgrade.
As for Condon, he has a very good working relationship with the team’s front office. If Pennington wanted to re-unite with Edwards, Condon would make it happen.
Right now, it would seem the Dolphins have the edge because they do not have an established starter and have not declared one.
But the Chiefs are very much in the picture.

At this point, I'd rather have Huard than Pennington.
