In other olympics news, apparently we snagged a bronze medal last night in an event where we werent expected to have any chance in hell.

A girl from Alaska on the US shooting team (Corey Cogdell), who at 21 was the youngest shooter in the finals was in a 4-way tie for third and beat the other 3 in a shootoff for the bronze in women's trap shooting. She apparently was ranked #50 in the world and was just happy to make it to the olympics.

Oh nice, I just saw the replay on nbcolympics.com. (Skip to about 40 minutes in for the important part) They randomly drew order, and the American drew 4. The other 3 all missed so she knew if she hit it, she'd win the bronze. She took a really long time, finally called for the clay, and when she hit it she was so happy she started crying.

I wonder if we have any good men's gymnasts coming up the pipeline for four years from now? Without a huge national mandate to find gymnasts like China, its kinda hard.

I can understand why we are, and probably will always be awesome in women's gymnastics, because damn near every little girl seems to give it a shot and so we have a massive talent pool to draw from, but nobody wants to go out for men's gymnastics. If your athletic, youll do baseball/basketball/football.

There's a reason why softball is being yanked from the olympics in 2012, and its not only because of baseball. The world is getting tired of handing over a freebie gold medal every year with no reasonable expectation that there will ever be competition.

As far as track and field is concerned... welp, if china wants to win the medal race they had better rack up a huge lead now, because we are really going to dominate in the track next week, and there are a huge array of medals to be won, vs only 12 total in gymnastics.

The "ugly" girl who really sang the song is on the left. The lip syncher is on the right.

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/08/12/oly.kids/t1home.girls.split.ap.jpg
BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A little girl and her song captivated millions of viewers during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. But what they saw was not what they heard.

Games organizers confirm that Lin Miaoke, who performed "Ode to the Motherland" as China's flag was paraded Friday into Beijing's National Stadium, was not singing at all.

Lin was lip-syncing to the sound of another girl, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, who was heard but not seen, apparently because she was deemed not cute enough.

"The reason was for the national interest," said Chen Qigang, the ceremony's musical director, in a state radio interview. "The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feeling and expression. ... Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects."

The decision was made at the highest levels, Chen said.

"We had to do it," he said. "We'd been through several inspections. They're all very strict. When we rehearsed at the spot, there were several spectators from various divisions, especially leaders from the Politburo, who gave the opinion it must change." Watch how far Olympic pride can go »

Few who watched the Olympic ceremony realized the deception. "Tiny singer wins heart of nation," read the headline in Tuesday's China Daily newspaper.

"Lin Miaoke might be only 9 years old but she is well on her way to becoming a star, thanks to her heartwarming performance," the article gushed -- without mentioning she never sang a note.

But as word has gotten out on the Internet, some Chinese bloggers are outraged.

"If you're not good-looking, no matter how well you sing, you'll not be onstage. Do you know you're twisting a whole generation?" read one comment.

Another said, "If foreigners found out, they'd think we can't even find a girl who is good at both."
As for Yang Peiyi, she's been quoted as saying she was honored to have had a role in the opening ceremony, even though few realized just how big her part really was.

Thats what they said about basketball after Bird, Magic and LJ destroyed the world. The world got better and kicked our ass for a few years. Why couldn't that happen in softball?

Many other nations at least liked the sport and played domestically. There was a reason to believe it may become competitive someday.

Softball is a USA-only event, no one else in the world takes it seriously at all, except to field a team to try to grab a medal. This sport was only added for politically-correct reasons. They didnt want to add a men's event without balancing it with a women's event. Baseball fell out of favor because the pros wont play, so there is no longer a reason to keep softball. I'm not really sorry to see softball go, and if we wont play our pros then I dont care about olympic baseball either.

alnorth
08-12-2008, 06:25 PM
Well, last night we grabbed a gold medal in another shooting event that we didnt expect to compete in. A 3rd-time olympian (Glenn Eller), who never did much the last couple olympics grabbed a gold and broke the olympic record in men's double trap. When he's not shooting, he is a member of the US Army's marksmanship unit. So, apparently he gets paid to shoot, and the US shooting team gets to borrow him every 4 years.

We also won a silver, but it was in some gay equestrian event, so I didnt even care enough to read about it, except to note it in the overall tally.

alnorth
08-12-2008, 06:49 PM
heh, just read a bit more about him. He went to the olympics on his own the last couple times, and he was so disappointed with his performance, he enlisted to join the Army's marksmanship unit last year and they apparently figured something out and got him ready to win in Beijing.

It was there, sure they ****ed up and it didn't matter at the end but when they were doing the exact same things the Chinese girl had a better score...

That's just how it goes in judged things.

And really only the 1 girl pissed down her leg.

They were doing the same things if you just look at it basically, but the showmanship of the Chinese and the US is night and day. The US still had a chance but they choked, plain and simple. Silver is still cool, but let's not make excuses here.

the bright side is that if tonight was the individual all-around, shawn johnson would be the olympic champion, and nastia would have been a solid silver.

no one from china competed in all 4 like shawn, so it wasnt a perfect comparison, but I looked at china's 2 best bets for all-around, and i took a reasonable guess at scores for the events they werent in. Even if you give them an above average score (why? if they were better than the 3rd girl, they'd be in it) it still comes out shawn.

Using reasonable guesses since nastia didnt vault, I think she would have been a solid second given that she nailed her crazy-hard uneven bar routine. If she makes a mistake on that, itll be a fight for silver for her.

Thats how it went in the prelims too, shawn had the best score, nastia #2, and a chinese girl 3rd.

China won today because they have a team full of specialists with only one legit all-around girl. We have the two best all-around girls in the world, but not so much for specialists beyond that.

thursday will be more fun for us. the media story will be shawn vs nastia. China wont grab the gold unless they both **** it up. nastia has the potential to beat shawn, but shawn is favored because for whatever reason she never seems to get nervous. shawn stepped out of bounds on floor, but beyond that, she was solid all the way around. not spectacular on any particular event (except vault), but in the all-around your looking for 4 solid scores, not 2 awesome scores like in the team event with specialists.

then the interviewer started to realize she went too far and tried to talk about how after she fell, the other teammates messed up too, but she would have none of it. She probably knew that the others ended up making it irrelevant even if she had done well, but she's the team captain and obviously decided she would accept all the gunshots.

So, here's the dilemma. Do you want USA to win this match, or cheer for more bikini volleyball? Just how much is your patriotism worth to you anyway?

On second thought, if we get eliminated NBC probably loses interest, so thats no good. I guess we should cheer for USA and hope venezuela makes it out of the prelims on tiebreakers, I dont think we are in single elimination yet.

Altidore moving up and subbing McBride out made so much more sense, but instead we have Feilhaber replacing the guy who's EASILY been the most dangerous, skilled player on the field in the ~60 minutes Nowak has let him see? Re. Tar. Ded.

Olympic update, USA grabbed another gold medal (and bronze) in an event we werent expecting to win. Kristin Armstrong (no relation to Lance) won the women's cycling time trial. (Time trial sounded like a qualification thing to me, but I guess it is its own event). Its only the second gold medal ever won by the US in any women's cycling event. This one didnt come completely from nowhere since Kristin is a highly-regarded rider, but she wasnt expected to win.

Sada Jacobson got things started off 5-2 for the US, then Mariel Zagunis pooped in her hat, Becca Ward didn't do too much better, and things started getting out of control. We kept getting two or three-hit spurts, but they just kept holding off with the early lead they assembled. Sada really, really pushed in the last round, but it was too little, too late.

BEIJING (AP)—Just nine months before the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese government’s news agency, Xinhua, reported that gymnast He Kexin (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/kexin+he/235312/;_ylt=AktBgA0ARPA1ZYHxgEtJGQXQ1Zl4) was 13, which would have made her ineligible to be on the team that won a gold medal this week.

In its report Nov. 3, Xinhua identified He as one of “10 big new stars” who made a splash at China (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/;_ylt=AgGp0F3e5TXf3cXlbeojziLQ1Zl4)’s Cities Games. It gave her age as 13 and reported that she beat Yang Yilin (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/yilin+yang/235316/;_ylt=ArKVmxS3IEa.MdJFwdYi5szQ1Zl4) on the uneven bars at those games. In the final, “this little girl” pulled off a difficult release move on the bars known as the Li Na (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing;_ylt=AhinLV1r.hH9m3hJ_egkyUPQ1Zl4?type=lastname&first=1&query=Li+Na&q=Li+Na), named for another Chinese gymnast, Xinhua said in the report, which appeared on one of its Web sites, www.hb.xinhuanet.com (http://www.hb.xinhuanet.com)

The Associated Press found the Xinhua report on the site Thursday morning and saved a copy of the page. Later that afternoon, the Web site was still working but the page was no longer accessible. Sports editors at the state-run news agency would not comment for publication.

That position is called the Libero. It's basically a defensive position. If you're good at defense, they can play Libero and be in the back row all the time... they just can't leave their feet to "attack" and cannot come into the front row to touch the ball.

If you have a USA flag next to your name you seem to get screwed in judged sports...
That does seem to be the case tonight in gymnastics.

Is it just me or are these american girls getting hosed on their scores?

Well we dont know crap about gymnastics, so all we can really see is landings. I guess the experts said Shawn messed up on a handstand which is something we wouldnt have had a clue about.

And the Chinese girls score tops Nastia's.....

Unless the girl falls she's going to win, they are going to let China win all the gold in gymnastics...just like the other night it was some coincidence that even before Alicia fell the American's score were consistently lower than expected while the Chinese were higher...

The Americans are getting hosed. The Chinese are getting bumped up.

I'll be glad when we get to events that areN'T subjective so we can kick everyone's ass a little harder.

The judges probably don't want to be mysteriously killed.

Then the announcer essentially says Shawn Johnson is getting screwed because of her look.

This Chinese woman isn't doing too good. Having difficulty on her balancing on her landings.

That's the one that fell on her ass.....

The other one got a higher score on the bars than Nastia she is the one that is likely to win unless she majorly screws up.

And look at her higher score after Shawns....

Yep some Chinese favortism.

This ho has 4 balance checks and doesn't stick the landing and she gets the SAME execution score as Shawn Johnson?

This is absolutely fixed.
