If you like fair skin blondes then it's Nastia, if you like tanned brunettes then it's Sacromone.

He retired from coaching after the 96 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, IIRC. I also saw this tibet from Wikipedia.

Bela was banned from the floor of the Beijing games for undisclosed reasons. This ban may be the cause (or effect) of his frequent insistence during the commentaries on NBC that the 2008 Chinese women's gymnastics team cheated by using athletes who did not meet the minimum age requirements.[16] He and his wife (the coach of the second place US team) stated that "They are using half-people. One of the biggest frustrations is, what arrogance. These people think we are stupid." [17]

After the two of them made those comments, I feared for their lives. Those Chinese don't like people saying bad things about them.

It's neat to see how much the gold meant to Liukin. I always like watching the athletes during the National Anthem. Just to see all the heart and soul they poured into their sport come out in one seminal moment. Unless you're Michael Phelps and have done it 12 times already.

I found myself smiling pretty wide when she was accepting her medal, and I was downright proud when the Star Spangled Banner was playing. It was a legitimately emotional moment, and I'm glad that the Olympic Games are around to create this moment and those like it.

I slayed a virgin last weekend. She did not bleed or anything. You do realize they shove things in and around their vagina over and over again even at a young age before they do sit on dicks. Have you seen the size of those huge big black dildos? Either way, I'll look for you on that to catch a predator show.

I don't care how poorly Bela treated his gymnasts during training. The man is hilarious.

every 4 years I look forward to seeing other countries playing obscure sports I never get to see otherwise - much like the good 'ol Wide World of Sports. And then, what happens?

All we get to see is whatever America is good in. Beach volleyball? are you friggin kidding me? I can watch that any weekend of the year.

At least we get to see 3 minutes of commercials for every 5 minutes of coverage...Watch on NBCOlympics.com. It's how I discovered the wackiness of handball and the wonders of fencing and NBC's judo commentator.

olympic update, USA wins silver in the 50m prone rifle, so apparently we did have a few rednecks who could shoot.

In a bizarre turn of events, a North Korean silver medalist in the 50m air pistol was stripped of that medal when he tested positive for a banned drug that helps prevent trembling of the hands. Because of that, a US shooter who had finished 4th was given the bronze.

Tonight is probably the only race left (100m butterfly) where Phelps might possibly lose. He is also in Saturday's 4x100 medley relay for the potential 8th gold, but the USA is very heavily favored to win that, so if he wins tonight, then the 8th race should just be a victory lap.

Odds I found for tonight's 100m Butterfly:

Michael Phelps -500
Milorad Cavic +450
Ian Crocker +800
Andriy Serdinov +5000
Andrew Lauterstein +5000
Jason Dunford +5000
Takuro Fujii +10000
Ryan Pini +10000

You'd think from those odds it will be a complete annihilation, but I suspect that Phelps has been bet very heavily beyond the realistic odds.

And to illustrate why it would be over if Phelps wins tonight, I found some odds for the 4x100 medley relay on saturday. The odds for the US to lose that race are silly-high.

I think numbers are amount received for 1.00 wagered.

Team (Win) (Medal)

USA Men 1.10 no bet
Australia Men 8.00 1.15
Japan Men 25.00 1.60
Russia Men 50.00 2.75
Great Britain Men 60.00 3.50
Italy Men 100.0 8.00
New Zealand Men 100.0 8.00
South Africa Men 100.0 8.00

BEIJING – For a long time, elements of the Chinese government itself thought women’s gymnast He Kexin (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/kexin+he/235312/;_ylt=AlH7vRgZFkmerXhegSuOh5S7KZt4) was born Jan. 1, 1994, which would make her 14 and too young to compete in these Summer Olympics.
Whether it was repeated mentions in the government-controlled media – including a new one uncovered Friday by the Associated Press – or on official gymnastic meet registration forms and websites, He was “this little girl” and a “new star.”
As recently as December 2007, in provincial gymnastics meets and news reports that covered it, she was a 13-year-old prodigy, too young for the 16-year-old Olympic age limit for gymnastics.
Then, suddenly, she wasn’t.

Earlier this year China (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/;_ylt=ApzVC0SRXAjNiOAsb06fYbG7KZt4) produced her passport that claimed she was born Jan. 1, 1992, making her old enough to perform a brilliant uneven bar routine and push China to the women’s all around gold medal.
The Chinese either got it wrong in 2007 or wrong in 2008. Considering 2000 Chinese bronze medalist Yang Yun later admitted on state television she was 14 that year, the reported ages of He Kexin and at least two of her teammates have aroused suspicion in nearly everyone except the powers that be – the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Both organizations accepted the new passport as fact, certified He and tried to cover their collective ears at all the complaints. Wednesday, the IOC even slipped a gold medal around He Kexin’s neck.
If the IOC had a modicum of decency and courage (don’t count on it), it would open an immediate investigation into whether it might take that medal right back.
If not for the of-age gymnasts who lost to the Chinese, then for He and her diminutive teammates, who – if they actually are old enough – don’t deserve suspicion tainting their accomplishment.
While the IOC undoubtedly is petrified of humiliating the host country in such a scandal, doing nothing merely humiliates the IOC and continues the belief that the organization is about money, not fair play.
For its part, the Chinese gymnastics delegation told the AP that the mistake was made by the media and provincial officials, not on the passport. Everything is on the up and up.
“It’s definitely a mistake,” Zhang Hongliang told the AP. “Never has any media outlet called me to check the athletes’ ages.
“We already explained this very clearly,” Zhang said. “There’s no need to discuss this thing again.”
Oh, but there is. The age of the Chinese gymnasts has overwhelmed the women’s gymnastics competition.
It’s not just the wild and often ill-timed accusations by USA Gymnastics team coordinator Marta Karoyli and her husband Bela Karoyli, who dubbed the Chinese “half people.”
It’s the snickers from disbelieving fans around the world who can’t come to grips with girls who look so young actually being 16.
The entire competition has lost credibility. Outside of China the focus has been on the birth dates, not the brilliance of the Chinese athletes.
The IOC and FIG can’t continue to bury their heads and hope it will blow away.
“The FIG has received confirmation from the International Olympic Committee that all passports are valid for all gymnasts competing in the Beijing Olympic Games,” FIG said in a statement.
“Stringent control measures are taken at the time of athlete accreditation for all official FIG competitions. Further, all athlete ages for the Beijing Olympic Games are consistent with the FIG records for all past FIG competitions.”
In an effort to protect the health of athletes whose bones and muscles have not fully formed, FIG years ago instituted the 16-year-old age minimum. To compete in these Games, a gymnast had to be born in 1992 or earlier.
A younger and presumably smaller gymnast would have an advantage in some disciplines due to their nimble nature. Nadia Comaneci scored seven perfect-10s in the 1976 Games when she was just 14.
Perhaps it’s believable that one person’s age could be so terribly confused. However, He is just one of the gymnasts with suspicious confusion.
The birth date of Yang Yilin (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/yilin+yang/235316/;_ylt=AhgAFpz8QsKOckj7qaykxRy7KZt4) was listed on official national registration lists posted by the General Administration of Sport of China website from 2004-2006 as a too-young Aug. 26, 1993, according to the AP.
On her passport her birth date is Aug. 26, 1992.
Jiang Yuyuan (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/yuyuan+jiang/235313/;_ylt=As21u8MfI.ufhj3ESYL3N.S7KZt4)’s birthday was Oct. 1, 1993 as recently as a registration list for a 2007 competition. According to her passport she was born Nov. 1, 1991.
All three of those gymnasts produced high-scoring performances on the uneven bars that gave China a lead it would not relinquish in the women’s team all around. It was one reason Marta Karoyli stomped around mocking the Chinese to her American gymnasts, calling them “little babies” and later claiming one still had “baby teeth.”
Karoyli’s suspicions were never wrong, just the style, means and timing in which she and her husband expressed them. The fact that her team’s performance was not strong and she expanded the conspiracies to include Olympic officials who were supposedly distracting her gymnasts didn’t help (that accusation was refuted by USA Gymnastics itself).
No matter the strength of the allegations, the moments after the competition was not the time for Karoyli to throw a hissy-fit unbecoming of a team coordinator.
Gymnastics deserve better from everyone. This cloud of controversy isn’t fair to the Chinese, the Americans or anyone else, and it shouldn’t be played out in media quotes and old websites.
A real investigation with real explanations is long overdue. It’s time for the IOC to do more than count the money here.

I must not have been paying close attention, but for some reason I only now found out that BMX is going to be in the olympics with races starting next week. Pretty cool.

Those who are trying to predict gold medals may want to give the US 1, possibly 2 medals for BMX. Our female entrant was a multi-year world champion recently, and we have the #1 and #2 racer in the world for the men. This could be our version of table tennis for the next few olympics, where we dominate but its popular enough in the rest of the world so that they wont yank the event.

Started already, with some qualifying last night and medal events started this morning. US won silver in men's shotput and bronze in the women's 10,000m. Hopefully NBC will see fit to show some of these events, even if they arent the sexy marquee events like the 100m sprint.

obviously the "B" team that is qualifying for the 4x100 medley was warned to not do anything that would disqualify the US spot in the finals tomorrow. Screw winning, they only need to qualify, so they are all jumping in late to guarantee that they arent DQ'd.

I was about to think "it's nice to see the 10 minutes of routines without the commercials," and then they went to commerical. :doh!:

What time does he race tonight? Central time?

from what ive read elsewhere just now, it may look like they touched at the same time, but apparently it requires 30kg of force to register the touch, so if they touched at the same time, then phelps pushed it first. Might make sense since it was a glide vs a stroke.

From that one angle that was below and behind, it looked like Phelps got there first -- or more accurately, it was a "tie" that he won by a hair by hitting the pad harder. The worst angle is from above, where Cavic's hands are suspended right in front of the pad while Phelps is still making his lunge.

On another board I'm reading, some college swimmers who presumably know what they are talking about are saying the protest is a desperation move that wont go anywhere. Apparently (I didnt know this), the officials always rely on the touchpad unless the touch pad is catastrophically broken. (swimmer touches, it doesnt register, he pounds it, still doesnt work, obviously busted) If the video shows something different, apparently the officials always assume they didnt push it hard enough.

All that and she still wins the heat.

I hope I'm wrong, but does anyone not believe Torres is on some sort of stimulant?

alnorth

more detail: torres also apparently went to each swimmer and got them all to agree to wait, so she didnt give the officials much of a choice.

not likely. She volunteered for extra tests more often than what is required (just like Phelps) and agreed to have her blood preserved for 10 years to run any test in the future that they come up with. She didnt have to do that.

Olympic update, an American set an new olympic record in qualification and is now in the medal round for men's rapid fire pistol. (4 series of 5 shots each, each series fired within 4 seconds.)

He'll be shooting soon, online at nbcolympics.com

For those who don't think Phelps really won:

The Serbs filed a formal protest, and who could blame them? Who can live with a loss by one-hundredth of a second? FINA, swimming’s governing body, used sophisticated video equipment that can break a race down to 1/10,000th of a second — and they said that a couple of frames showed that Phelps did indeed touch the wall first. They showed the video to the Serbs, who were satisfied enough to not appeal. The time was right. Phelps had won. It was that close.
