Here it is! Your thread to talk about anything and everything 2008 Summer Olympics! (Except politics. Lets please try and keep this strictly to the sporting events)

Looks like Soccer started yesterday officially.

China is 13 hours ahead of Central time. So most of the live coverage will be middle of the night. Alot of NBC's primetime coverage will be tape delayed.

Judo update

Women's extra lightweight: our only entrant had bad luck and drew the defending world champion in the first round. She's now out, so we no longer care about that event.

Men's Extra lightweight: Our only entrant was also matched up with a judo God from Japan, but somehow he won. He now has to fight some dude from Venezuela, match scheduled to begin very soon.

I've done some research in Judo scoring. Its really complicated, but I kinda like it, they set this sport up well, its really a "fight or go home" type of sport. If you have a small lead you cant screw around playing defense or the judges start awarding the other guy points for stalling.

Basically, the goal is to take your guy, throw him, and lay him the f*** out on the mat cold. Period. Someone can be WAY ahead in points, but if the other dude pulls off a perfect throw its like a headshot. Match over, score irrelevant, you win.

Scoring:

Ippon (really awesome hard throw, referee signals with arm straight in the air). Worth 1,000 points, match over, you win.

Waza-aris (really good throw, but not quite an ippon, ref arm at shoulder height). Worth 100 points, match is over if you do this twice.

Yuko (decent throw, but not all that great, ref points arm at 45 degrees) worth 10 points for tiebreaker if the match doesnt end early.

Koka (scrappy little judo move, better than "meh", ref makes a stop-sign type of signal) worth 1 point for tiebreakers if the match doesnt end early.

Then I guess the opponent can be awarded points if you are screwing around and not fighting.

On the bright side, there's handball on. It's like indoor soccer or lacrosse, only a million times less difficult.

Penalty shots are pretty awesome, though. Instead of being six yards away and kicking a ball at a big net, you're standing like four feet away and throwing the ball right at the goalie who's blocking a smaller net.

alnorth
08-09-2008, 12:34 AM
watching the fencing replay on tv, this is a lot better with commentators explaining rules instead of just a net cam.

Apparently that whole annoying screaming thing is intended to try to convince the ref that you scored on a close call, since you only have 2 challenges in a match to force a video review.

alnorth
08-09-2008, 12:47 AM
Ahh, now I see why they didnt do this live. These three matches with the USA women were actually going on simultaneously, I had to pick only one to watch. Now though these announcers can watch the tapes back to back and pretend they are calling live matches, showing all three on TV.

Just saw a hilarious match where a Cuban was pretty far ahead on points, then got his opponent into a bad position in the air where it was obvious he was about to win. He could have just dropped him from a low level and it would be over, but then it was like he decided "screw it, I'm going to hurt this guy", used his leverage to pick him up higher and slammed him from 4-5 feet.

sometimes you see an awesome throw. Thats basically the goal of the match, if you throw the guy onto his back, you automatically win. They only use the score as a tiebreaker when time expires. Kind of like boxers trying to KO the other guy even if they are way behind on points.

From researching a bit, USA is not expected to medal in judo, but if we did it would probably only come from the guy fighting tonight. He's one win away from the final 4, but his next match is against a Cuban who is the #1 ranked guy in the weight class, so it might not be likely.

At this point we probably wont care at all about any martial art events until late next week when Taekwondo starts up. We suck at judo, but for whatever reason USA is a hell of a lot better in Taekwondo than Judo, we've won gold medals before and will have a strong team. (4 people, 3 of them from the same family, aka "the fighting Lopez's") Must be because just about every city in the US has a few TKD schools that moms and dads enroll their little kids in for exercise, and I guess a few of those kids stick with it. NBC might even see fit to mention them once or twice if they win something.

I had no idea that the Chinese love basketball so much. Apparently Yao Ming's jersey is only the 6th-best seller in China, behind Bryant, Wade, etc. They are now also making a big push to improve basketball in the country, paying for at a minimum, at least a basketball court in every village in the whole country.

For the first time in forever, the US Basketball team might have a bit of a homefield advantage in the olympics, the crowd has been applauding both sides.

I can't believe how much support the US is getting, even in their game against China. Pretty cool that the crowd can appreciate good basketball, even when it's at the expense of their home team.

They just showed Kobe walking through the crowd to get to the floor, and was was getting absolutely mauled by fans...

the nbc site is ****ing impossible to navigate....

has anyone else found the page that lists all active streams? i was there once and can't get back....

i don't mean the schedule page, but the page that had several mini-media players listed in horizontal rows, clicking them took you immediately to the live feed of that sport....the page was updated as matches ended and new sports began.....

i can not freaking find it now.....

It's only 8:30 AM in China, at least let them get their morning Starbucks.

I do. I don't really read ESPN.com during the Olympics, for instance. I realize the time difference.

That's fine... it's not a big deal. I'm just one of those people who actually waits to watch this stuff when it airs. I would prefer a thread to discuss this stuff as the US gets to see it.. but if that's not what the board wants, that's fine. I was just making a suggestion.

I don't know the exact schedule... but if say, some of the big individual track events (100m, etc) are tape delayed... I don't want to know about them before I watch them.

Actually i read that NBC (because they paid a ton of $$ for the rights) used their power to get the most popular events like swimming and Gymnastics moved to the morning in China. That way they can show them here in the states live during primetime.

nah, I'm not staying up for this. Gotta work tomorrow, and we suck at judo, so I'm sure she'll be eliminated soon enough.

One thing that is irritating about judo, the way the competition is set up, its WAY too prone to luck. Talent doesnt seem to have as much of a factor, its single-elimination all the way and good fighters can lose any given match too easily. Taekwondo should be more interesting next week.
