I'm refraining due to my detestation for the Chinese government.

Human rights abuses, Tibet, Taiwan, lead-based in our toys, press restrictions, poison in pet food. et. al.

If it would make any difference, I would. China's "look, we're totally not a smog-spewing shithole" ploys are pathetic, and their human rights abuses are many, but watching soccer and basketball and FIELD HOCKEY!!! is still much more entertaining whatever else is on TV, and I'm not a Nielsen viewer.

I have a good friend who grew up in Beijing and moved over here when she got married about 5 years ago. Her husband grew up here and spent about 2 years in China going to school, and for awhile worked for companies here representing them in China so he traveled a ton. Both of them describe a totally different China than what you see on tv.

Now I can understand if you lived there talking about China in a very positive light, but my friend that grew up here also desribes China very positively. Makes me wonder if it's either hidden over there, or if we blow stuff up over here a little bit?

Way to stand on the side lines. How about putting on a helmet and get on the field? Head to China to fight them. :)

I'm not watching because the Olympics have become to common of an event. When it was every 4 years you could work up enthuiasm for watching, but now that they broke the winter and summer games apart and staggered them it's just a biannual event.

As for politics, it's supposed to be an event that joins the world closer together, we know it doesn't because many people have the same attitude as you do. The same attitude prevails regardless of where they are held. Either get over it or don't, not many outside those in your same category really care.

I just thought it was funny that the Basketball team shut up before they went over there. They were speaking out against the human rights violations but then they shut up. And in an interesting statement by the Basketball director who said something like the Olympics have never been a political event.

I find that to be a very, very interesting history he's looked at.

I am surprised Barack Obama didn't go to the games as a dignitary.

Women's volleyball is on today. The U.S. team won the indoor game against Japan, and the sand team is playing now. It's something to have on while fixing breakfast or lunch.

You can actually see the events through the smog?

That Bears-Eagles game at Soldier Field comes to mind...the fog was so thick you couldn't see the field.

Anyway, to answer the question, no. The Summer Olympics haven't interested me since, well, forever.

I don't think China will care whether or not we watch the Olympics. What they might care about is if we stop buying all their cheap crap.

He should have been the guy walking the flags in for each country, President of the World.

Looking at the Beijing sky I suddenly feel thankful for the LWNJ environmentalists. That looks nasty, I can't imagine living there.

Agreed.

I'm an Olympaholic, summer or winter, doesn't matter. First night I was up at 2 am watching women's sabre. Water polo? Check. You name it, I'll watch it....except for the horse riding, I can't seem to get into that. But honestly, since ABC's Wide World of Sports went away I haven't been able to catch a good cabre tossing event in years so the Olympics is for me. Part of it is my idealistic naivte that just has to come out once in awhile. Part of it is knowing that 99% of these athletes just bang away at a sport they love with no recognition, except every 4 years, and do it for the love of sport. Part of it is the notion that sports transcend differences. All that feel good crap. Don't anyone dare attempt to take that away from me either, I'm a pissed off cynic that would just as soon brain you with a rusty spoon as say hello the rest of my life and I like the feel goods my naivte brings me every Olympics. The fact they split them up means I get twice the goodness. Awesome, just awesome.

I am surprised Barack Obama didn't go to the games as a dignitary.

Bush has been at every event I've seen on NBC's HD coverage.

I guess he's to a lot of time on his hands, considering the current State of the Union.
