GC 2008: Xbox 360 Controller Redesigned
Bidding farewell to the spongy d-pad.
by Martin Robinson, IGN UK

UK, August 20, 2008 - A subtly redesigned Xbox 360 controller has been spotted on the showroom floor at this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, sporting a new-feel d-pad that addresses the previously unresponsive and spongy model.

While aesthetically identical to the previous controller, the d-pad has been re-engineered to offer more instant control, with an eight way input taking place of the previous four. A brief hands-on with the controller playing Pro Evolution 2009 proved that the redesign has been effective, with the d-pad sitting in a larger rocker and proving more tactile.

It's expected to release at the same time as this year's Pro Evolution Soccer, and the re-design is thought to have been inspired by the imminent release of Street Fighter IV.

We'll have photos of the new controller - though don't expect to see the difference - and further impressions later on.

Good news, the current d-pad is worthless for fighting games.

Good deal..although I honestly don't use the D-pad all that much, it is probably the only (very minor) flaw of the 360 controller.

This is good, the stupid directional pad is worthless. Only good for switching weapons in fps games lol

Capcom is also releasing a new controller for the Street Fighter IV launch.

I only use the d-pad seriously on fighting games and like others have said - weapon/item switching.

I hardly ever use the D pad so I never knew there was even a problem with it.

None of this matters becuase its a limited edition controller for Europe and Asia.

It's the PES green controller that is limited.

Why would Microsoft spend the time, money, effort, and resources to design a new mechanism for the internals of the d-pad, AND work out all of the logistics to have a manufacturer reset their production to incorporate those changes JUST for a limited-release controller in two territories for the promotion of ONE game?

These new controllers will more than likely creep into the newer consoles, much like the newer models with the shrunken GPUs

Phew, I almost bought one of those Hori Arcade Sticks for $70 because the D-pad on the 360 is so terrible. This is good news. Hopefully it will be clearly distinguishable from the old ones by packaging or some such.

I can't justify anything over $50 on a peripheral. Those are really nice sticks though.

I have a friend that makes arcade sticks. I am going to have him make me one for SF4 i think. He just needs a regular wired xbox360 controller the buttons and joystick which he gets from a store close to him. He does awesome work.

I'd consider buying it if instead of Virtua Fighter they would have put SNK on it.

Dreamcast is my favorite console of all time... too many great hits.
Still have mine hooked up to the tv in the living room :) -- Me and the boys will break out Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Street Fighter 3 Alpha every now and again.

Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, and Crazy Taxi FTW

I've got a Saturn with Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter and X-Men vs Street Fighter...I love em. The Saturn controller just dominates for fighters. 4mb RAM expansion makes them play like the Arcades.

However, i'm going to try loading a CPS2 emulator on my PSP and see how that works...

Never tried Clockwork Knight, the rest I really didn't care for that much. CotA was ok. I generally only played those 2 games, with a little Darkstalkers and Marvel Super Heroes mixed in. My buddy liked Virtual-On quite a bit too, he actually had the Twinstick controllers for the saturn.

I saved up every penny I got for x-mas that year to get a Saturn ($399) - My first game for it was "Sega Rally Championship" and soon after "Panzer Dragoon" :)

I wish I still had that console.

They can be found pretty cheap on eBay.

I bought my first Saturn at the JC Penney outlet store in KC. It cost $32. :doh!:

I remember playing Daytona on my launch Saturn. Sega really needs to release it on XBLA/PSN/VC.

The Saturn had such potential, its such a shame Sega bungled it.

As long as we're on the subject of Sega and Bungling. I had a Sega CD and let me tell ya, it sucked. But the Dreamcast was pretty good, Shenmue just bled the company dry.

That coupled with the playstation having a dvd player = DEATH of dreamcast.

Shenmue really was a fantastic game though.

The dreamcast controller was too shallow in the back by the triggers for my hands. I liked it otherwise
