View Full Version : Prayer Request I Am Compelled To Ask Another Favor

FAX

Okay. Where do I start?

The beautiful and witty Mrs. FAX was diagnosed with thyroid cancer several years ago. As I'm sure many of you know, there are various forms of this disease and, gratefully, she has the least severe. Nevertheless, it is cancer and can be dangerous. At the time of her diagnosis, her thyroid was surgically removed and the remaining tissue ablated with a radioactive isotope. This is the typical treatment in these cases.

Last week, she underwent a standard, follow up, full body scan to determine the current stage of the disease. This is a procedure in which the patient is given radioactive iodine which is absorbed into the thyroid tissue. If there is a problem, the iodine appears on the scan because, since thyroid cancer mimics actual thyroid tissue, the cancer will be displayed even though thyroid tissue may no longer be present in the patient.

The results came in today and they have found what they termed, an "abnormality". Even though the doctor's office is closed today, they asked her to come in at 1:00 pm central for an ultrasound in order to further examine this "abnormality". This is troubling since, apparently, there is some urgency.

It may be minor. That, of course, is our hope. However, I am forced to ask the Planet once again for your help. If you are so inclined, your prayers would be greatly appreciated by my family. I would also ask those who are not spiritually minded, if you so choose, to simply think a brief, positive thought about a wonderful girl who is in need of the Higher Power's care at this moment in time.

I must tell you that I hesitated to make this request since my mother's situation was so recent. It is certainly not my intention to take advantage of or deplete your good will with repetitive requests of this nature. Nevertheless, I am convinced that your good wishes and prayerful concern contributed in no small measure to a very positive outcome in my mother's case. The beautiful and witty Mrs. FAX is my life and love, so I honestly have no choice but to humbly ask you once more for your assistance. I hope you understand.

Best to all.

Proverbs 24:10
If thou faint in the day of adversity thy strength is small

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in a moment of comfort and convenience but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy. I applaud you for turning to God in your time of challenge. I applaud you for not being ashamed to ask others to join you in the power of prayer. May God's healing hands touch your wife and bring her the health you so lovingly are asking for. My prayers are with you for her recovery and your strength through our saviour Jesus Christ.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts, comments, and prayers. They are, and have been, sincerely and greatly appreciated, believe me. Things have settled down somewhat, I'm back at work, and want to take a moment to update you on the results of our efforts to metaphysically modify reality.

First of all, let me say that, were cancer a human being, I would kill it. Not only would I kill it, I would cut off its arms and legs, gut it, and let it suffer for as long as possible before it died. I would do this without hesitation, remorse, or a second thought. F*ck cancer.

Now, back to the subject at hand.

One of the reasons I was so concerned when I started this thread is that her doctor's office was actually closed yesterday, but they asked her to come in anyway for a follow up ultrasound and biopsy - both of which were performed yesterday afternoon. I credit her doc for calling in his staff and taking his day off to do this.

The bottom line is that the cancer has returned. Obviously, given the doctor's sense of urgency and his use of the vague term "abnormality" in describing the need for the immediate follow up, this was anticipated. But it's not all bad.

Right now, it appears that the cancer is localized - confined to two groups of lymph nodes in her neck. This means it's operable which is, in fact, very good news, indeed. We'll have to vet the surgeon, of course, but once we find the right guy, she'll go under the knife - probably sometime early next week.

In the case of certain forms of thyroid cancer, this is a typical treatment. Once inside, if they find that the cancer is well defined, they should be able to get it all and we'll be in great shape. At this point, that is our expectation. Still, if I could somehow take this disease upon myself, I would gladly do so.

Given all that could have been, this is good news - probably the very best that could have been hoped for under the circumstances. So, once again I find myself extremely grateful for and very humbled by your desire to help through your prayers and good wishes. I read several of your posts to the beautiful and witty Mrs. FAX last evening and the room was filled with the music of her laughter. Our spirits are high and, in large measure, that is due to you guys. Thank you again.

I think you're right that this is generally good news, all things considered. I'm sure you were thinking the worst and hoping for the best and it sounds like the best is what you got. Hopefully by this time next week Mrs. FAX will have undergone a successful surgery.

We're aware of that, Mr. chasedude. Very much so. This is one of those deals, though, where you look at it and say, "You know, if you have no choice and you have to have cancer, this is the one you want." It's a 'sweet lemon' rationale, to be sure, but no less appropriate.

The survivability of this particular strain is very high, so the signs are generally positive. It's amazing, though, all the things that go through your mind when you're dealing with something like this.

So far as we're concerned, you just have to make the conscious, intentional decision to be positive. The injury is sufficient. The insult would be to let it ruin the life you have. If at all possible, we're going to resist that.

Hey FAX, not to pry but do you have any new news?

Hope all is well for you and the BAWMF.

As it happens, we received the results of the biopsy today, as a matter of fact, Mr. RJ.

It was as expected. The cancer has returned. But there is good news. It hasn't mutated into another, more virulent strain which can happen and was, frankly, our greatest intermediate fear. We meet with her doctor on Friday. That's when the discussion regarding the surgery will occur. We need to make sure she has a good surgeon, then she'll have the procedure which amounts to removing the diseased lymph nodes. Since the cancer is contained within those nodes and they're reasonably easy to remove, it should be straightforward. I just want to make sure the surgeon has done this before ... several times ... successfully.

Her doctor has mentioned the idea of removing all the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck as a precautionary measure. I've done some research on this treatment theory and there doesn't appear to be any "recommended" or "measurably beneficial" advantage to this approach. That's one thing we need to sort out.

Otherwise, I think we're going to be okay. Thanks for the interest, Mr. RJ.

Thanks, Mr. RJ. This was a rough night. She went to a "support group" meeting of cancer survivors to exchange information and get some advice. Her takeaway from the meeting included some depression, sadness, and fear.

It really pisses me off, frankly.

I am one who believes that, when you go through something like this, it's extremely important to maintain a positive attitude as the body and mind are symbiotic. Not all, but a lot of the people who attend groups of this nature are, frankly, obsessed with their disease, in my opinion. Were it not so, they wouldn't be attending the meetings regularly. Sort of a "misery loves company" deal. Although the information they share might be helpful, dwelling on all the "could" go wrong or "might" happen or what to "watch out for" and taking those concerns to extremes and making them top of mind can be very unhelpful. I hope we can stop going to these damn things.

I promised to keep you guys updated, so here it is ...

The surgery is tomorrow. They will be removing lymph nodes from her lower neck and doing a bit of exploratory surgery in an attempt to locate any additional affected nodes that, for whatever reason, didn't show up on the scans. She's a little nervous and, to tell the truth, so am I (but don't let her know that).

I'll be spending this day getting things ready for her to come home Sunday or Monday, so I won't be posting for the next several days. Wish us luck.

No need to sticky this, mods. Just updating Planeteers.

Take care, guys.

Good luck, FAX. I think it's pretty normal to be nervous over such a thing. Don't be nervous about your nervousness. We'll all be looking forward to hearing from you again with good news.

Thanks, Mr.

Well, here's the update ...

Surgery was Friday afternoon. All went well. In fact, the surgery was far less invasive than anyone anticipated including the surgeon. She came home yesterday and will go in today to have a drainage tube removed from the incision site.

The only problems so far have been associated with all the pain meds and the hospitalization itself ... she fainted in the hospital yesterday ... due, I'm sure, to the fact she'd been flat on her back for three days ... and she's tired and weak. My job now is to encourage her back to her feet without pissing her off too much. A fine line, I must admit.

In a few weeks, she'll return to the hospital for radiation therapy. That involves taking a pill that will make her glow in the dark for a few days with the goal of burning off any remaining thyroid tissue.

Basically, we're in the clear and the prognosis is very good. I am extremely relieved. Thanks to all for your good wishes and prayers. I'm quite certain these intentional ethereal modifications played a role in this very positive outcome.
