... as legitimate issues of concern in political discourse.

In my opinion, and I've said this before, McCain's age was a non-issue. It always bugged me when people (other than comedians who I don't blame) would try to ridicule McCain for his age. In particular, it bugged me when Dems tried to make it a political issue.

But McCain's selection of Palin and her stunning lack of qualifications really and truely calls the issue of McCain's age into the discussion. Her inexperience makes him almost too old. Pick Romney or Leiberman or Meg Whitman or Carly Fiorina or just about anyone else and it's a non-issue still.

And further, no matter whether you are an R or a D, this pick is a high-stakes gamble... not one that you'd expect a "conservative" to make. Why did McCain gamble on her?

""Enjoying craps opens up a window on a central thread constant in John's life," says John Weaver, McCain's former chief strategist, who followed him to many a casino. "Taking a chance, playing against the odds." Aides say McCain tends to play for a few thousand dollars at a time and avoids taking markers, or loans, from the casinos, which he has helped regulate in Congress. (...)

"He clearly knows that this is on the borderline of what is acceptable for him to be doing," says a Republican who has watched McCain play. "And he just sort of revels in it.""

Since we are just unloading on McCain and all of his ugly baggage, I'll bump my own thread from last night.

McCain is going to throw the dice when deciding the next war we should engage in.

Hell, he'll probably throw the dice when deciding to push the big red button.
