Bill Clinton (http://www.newsday.com/topic/politics/government/presidents-of-the-united-states/bill-clinton-PEPLT007410.topic) and Barack Obama (http://www.newsday.com/topic/politics/government/barack-obama-PEPLT007408.topic) will have their first private meeting of the campaign season on Thursday at the former president's Harlem office, campaign aides said, signaling another step toward party unity as the race for the White House (http://www.newsday.com/topic/politics/government/executive-branch/the-white-house-PLCUL000110.topic) intensifies.

Clinton, who extended the invitation, gave a rousing speech in Denver at the Democratic National Committee convention, urging voters to get behind Obama. The speech came after a bruising primary race between Obama and Clinton's wife, Hillary, that left a rift in the party.

BY NIA-MALIKA HENDERSON |nia.henderson@newsday.com (nia.henderson@newsday.com?subject=Newsday.com%20Article)
6:26 PM EDT, September 8, 2008

This marks the first time they will appear together since they took the stage at a memorial service for an Ohio (http://www.newsday.com/topic/us/ohio-PLGEO100103800000000.topic) congresswoman on Aug. 30. One or two aides also will attend, the campaign said.

"President Clinton is a major contributing factor and his support will be necessary to win in November, and there is strong work to be done to correcting any rifts," said Nassau County (http://www.newsday.com/topic/us/new-york/nassau-county-PLGEO100100803000000.topic) Legis. Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead), a former Clinton delegate who now backs Obama. "Whenever two sides are talking it's good. We want to make sure we have all cylinders rolling."

If this works out, big mo will shift like a tidal wave.

Why do people think the Clintons want to help Obama? Even better, why does Obama think they want to help him?

Big mistake on O's part.

Maybe because they do?

Why would they want to help him? Helping him only hurts their chance to get back in the White House....

This reminds me of the Mission Accomplished speech Bush gave in which people he thought would help him sent him out to make a fool of himself. He trusted people he thought wanted to help us succees in Iraq, turns out they just wanted to make us look stupid.

The Clinton's are the only one's I'd avoid if I were Obama. The rest of the field should be used to help him out.

Yeah I'd avoid someone who left office with an approval rating of 65% and is regarded by some to be one of the best presidents ever

Yes, afterall Kerry said one of his greatest regrets was not taking advantage of Bill's offer of help. Why would you want an extremely popular populist former President's support.

Those "some" tend to be democrats. Few republicans see him as one of the best presidents ever.
