Vintage Conan appearance. I would love just once to make someone as funny as Conan crack up like he does in the end.

I can't stop laughing at;

He has the eyes of an eagle, the wisdom of an owl and the grace of a swan, this man is for the birds!!!

So effing cheesy.

Reminds me of a guy I've heard on Raw Dog who uses the Georgie Jessel voice and delivers the crudest, broadest, most off-the-wall punchlines, but the self-loathing in his voice sells it.

My favorite part of that clip is where McDonald purposely overexplains the joke.

"What, is it called Nine and a Half Seconds?"

(pause)

"Because he prematurely ejaculated."

Not many people could have hijacked someone's interview like that without coming off as a total tool. Viva Norm McDonald.

Speaking of memorable Conan O'Brien appearances, here's Artie Lange's infamous train wreck of an interview.

That Saget roast was great.

They said he performed that way because of how cheezy Bob was on Full House.

I saw Norm's standup in high school and he was ****ing great.

I think whoever said that was kinda missing the point. Norm was roasting the roast, he wasn't roasting Saget.

Uhggg... Norm is pretty hit-and-miss with me. That missed. I understand what he was going for. But that just wasn't funny for me...

I think you have to be prepared for what he's doing to make it funny for you.

He's subverting the menace of his reputation, and committing to a straight recitation of crap material. It's not funny in a punchline way, it's funny in a WTF/disorienting way. And the humor creeps up on you. At first you fake laugh to be polite. Then you chuckle because you think you see where he's going. Then he delivers a lame joke [like the 'for the birds' line] in a way that tells you he knows how to deliver and is purposefully sabotaging that ability. And then the longer it goes, you laugh out of 'he's sticking with it' bemusement.

He's taking the long view. He has, and has had, his whole life to establish that he can kill a room. But in this friendly environment where people respect and admire that ability, he mortgages it on something odder and more memorable.

Reminds me of a bit I've heard described, but naturally never saw in person. A couple of titans when they were first starting out [I want to say Albert Brooks and someone like Ed Begley Jr. or Michael McKean, of that age and stature]. They would go up to an open mic in LA and with no esposition or explanation, they'd put on the appearance of a folk duo, or a comedic song duo, each with guitars. And for the next 12-15 minutes, they would just try to tune their guitars. They wouldn't address the crowd, or apologize, or explain. Just deet, deet, DEET, DEET, DEEEEEEEEE, . . . . Dut, dut, dut, DUT, DUUUUUUH, . . . . . .[fiddle with bridge] . . . . . [whisper something to each other] . . . . . deet, deet, DEET, DEET, DEEEEEEEEE, . . . shake their heads, . . . fiddle with the bridge some more. . . . . . Dut, dut, dut, DUT, DUUUUUUH. . . . [walk around the stage looking down], . . . [come back and whisper some more] . . . . deet, deet, DEET, DEET, DEEEEEEEEE

Audience, 1-2 minutes, silence, 2-4 chuckles, . . . 4-6 minutes murmurs, then anger, then people walking out . . .. . . then more and more laughter, . . until the whole place was rolling about 8-10 minutes in.

God, no shortage of Norm talk show gold. This Pistorius exchange just kills me. Norm's solid in standup and I love his sketches though it's not for everyone. But he's ridiculously good when he's just bullshitting around.

And not to go political, but I really liked what he had to say here

I can imagine that it’s hard when you do a joke that’s based in politics where you have to cut off half the possible audience.

Oh yeah, yeah. You know, Leno uses that. He goes, whenever a guy is on stage, he goes, “Oh, he just lost them,” because Leno just looked at it as truly just getting everyone to laugh, which became out of style at some point, but those are the comedians that I like. I think they’re more important, in a way. Someone like Jerry Seinfeld, who can talk about very, very tiny things, like cereal. You know? And people make fun of him for that, but that’s much more a part of your life than Donald Trump. Donald Trump, you might think he’s gonna affect your life, but he’s not really gonna affect your life. At least, I don’t think so.

To me, it varies. Depends on your life, where you’re at, and what you’re in the middle of. I can see it both ways.

Yeah, but I mean there are some things, for instance: abortion. It’s been decided. It’s not gonna change. Even healthcare, it’s not gonna change. Americans are going to expect healthcare as their right, so it doesn’t matter what the Congress says or what the President says or anything. Or gay rights, you know? None of this was ever decided by a politician. It was always decided by the hoi-polloi, you know? We decide things for ourselves more than we think we do.

We’re certainly not living in a dictatorship as it’s imagined by some people. And I think it’s imagined that way because, like you were saying earlier, since it’s not gonna change my life, I have to pretend it’s gonna change all these other people’s lives that are beneath me, you know? But I don’t believe that.

I think politicians are just like entertainers. In the United States, I’m talking about. Because we’re given so much freedom that there’s this gridlock. We, on purpose, usually vote the executive and the Congress against each other so the gridlock will continue and now even with an all Republican Senate, the constituents won’t allow anything but gridlock. But I understand that. Nobody wants to change.
