With the sheer amount of ****tardery certain to be present in this thread, I'm sad to be going over to a friend's house to watch the debate. Alas, like Michael Corleone, you'll probably pull me right back in upon my inglorious return.

It was always slated to be Foreign Policy, although the gravity of the week will most assuredly cover both economics as well as foreign policy.

The dude that correctly links the need to have a strong thriving economy to having a strong foreign policy wins.

I'm not judging the philosophy of these candidates here, just from the straight standpoint of judging how well each is doing in this debate. It shouldnt be a surprise that they both suck at this, Obama is more comfortable with scripted speeches and McCain is more comfortable fielding questions from a receptive audience. They have both always sucked in debates in their own parties.

In this case, I say McCain sucks less in this debate just for aggressiveness.

I am not judging these guy's philosophies AT ALL here (Obama is wrong btw). I am only judging how good they are at debating. You dont have to be a Democrat to admit that Bill Clinton is very good at this, and you dont have to be a Republican to observe that Obama is the worst debator in the entire pre-primary field.

Overall, I think McCain helped himself quite a bit. I don't know that I'd say he "won". But I think if he had clearly lost the debate tonight his campaign would be over, he pulled it out though in my opinion and may have resuscitated his campaign.

Although I must point out, Biden was riproaring ready to go and did interviews on all major networks within minutes after the debate. Sara Palin was nowhere to be found. NBC stated that they extended her an offer to come on, but the McCain campaign declined and instead had Rudy talk in her place. The decision to choose Palin is like a terminal cancer to McCains hopes for the Presidency.

Seriously though, no knockdowns of consequence for either side. No game changers. A tie goes to the guy who's ahead. McCain failed to deliver a blow, on what may likely have been his best chance. McCain's gonna really need to pull a rabbit out of his hat in one of the other debates if he expects to turn things around. I wouldn't be holding my breath on that, if I were a McCain supporter.

Poll Results Suggest More Uncommitted Voters Saw Obama As Debate Winner

Posted by Brian Montopoli| 83

UPDATED WITH FINAL NUMBERS CBS News and Knowledge Networks conducted a nationally representative poll of approximately 500 uncommitted voters reacting to the debate in the minutes after it happened.

Thirty-nine percent of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Barack Obama was the winner. Twenty-five percent thought John McCain won. Thirty-six percent saw it as a draw.

Forty-six percent of uncommitted voters said their opinion of Obama got better tonight. Thirty-one percent said their opinion of McCain got better.

Sixty-six percent of uncommitted voters think Obama would make the right decisions about the economy. Forty-four percent think McCain would.

Forty-eight percent of these voters think Obama would make the right decisions about Iraq. Fifty-eight percent think McCain would.

We will have a full report on the poll later on. Uncommitted voters are those who don't yet know who they will vote for, or who have chosen a candidate but may still change their minds.

The margin of sampling error could be plus or minus 4 percentage points for results based on the entire sample.

So how well does McCain know his friend Henry Kissinger? You know, the guy McCain has been friends with for 35 years? Apparently not as well as he thinks.

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2008/09/16/Kissinger_Open_direct_Iran_talks/UPI-46971221579660/
==================================================

Kissinger: Open direct Iran talksPublished: Sept. 16, 2008 at 11:41 AMOrder reprints |

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger says the United States should begin direct negotiations with Iran over its nuclear enrichment program.

Kissinger, speaking Monday at George Washington University along with four other former U.S. State Department secretaries, said the next president should initiate high-level discussions with Iran "without conditions," ABC News reported.

The opinion of the former secretary of state for Republican presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford differs sharply with that of the current GOP administration, which has maintained a strict policy of not negotiating directly with governments deemed to sponsor international terrorism. The Bush administration has demanded that Iran dismantle its nuclear program as a precondition for any direct talks.

The other former secretaries of state, Madeleine Albright, James Baker III, Warren Christopher and Colin Powell, were asked to identify the biggest challenges the next president will face. They answered the fight against terrorism, restoring America's reputation abroad, r-building U.S. economic power and global climate change, ABC reported.

But in listening to the post debate discussion on CNN I guess just heard why my reaction is different that the viewership generally.

They said that among men, McCain was seen as the winner, slightly. Among women, Obama was the winner widely.

And they showed the clip that I thought pushed McCain out in front at the time. I don't remember the issue, but it was McCain getting loud and agressive. I thought that was good for McCain, but the Women and Indy's thought that was bad for McCain.

That shaded my view of the outcome enough to seperate me from the overall opinion it seems.

I thought it was a draw. And a draw favors Obama, but I didn't think it was a "win" for Obama.

I'm in complete agreement with that, especially because it was a foreign policy debate for most of it.

I can understand why Obama's polling better though.

Completely irrelevant to my point.

That doesnt mean he'll lose, debates are a tiebreaker. We've had many eloquent speakers get beaten by guys who couldnt talk in public because the country was too far tilted one way.Actually your memory is dulled IMO. I saw Clinton doing exactly what Obama was doing on Letterman this last week.

I agree. I misspoke it was a focus group of independent voters 61% Obama 39% McCain. 64% said Obama would win the election. In this election Indy's are the key demographic.

CNN was reporting all major polls showing Obama winning and in some winning big.

It comes back to the likeability factor and McCain looked old and grumpy and Obama was statesman and graciousI am amazed the McCain campaign has not learned the three lessons from Televised debate history.

1. I candidate has to look healthy and comfortable (massive failure)

2. If you are too aggressive you lose a lot of voters in the at home TV audience. (big loss here, though some will like it)

3. Looking and sounding gracious, big win for Obama.

Over all McCain probably got more of his talking points across, unfortunately most people already know his talking points.

#1. Now you are grading on the Miss America curve? Obama - young - healthy? McCain - not as young - not healthy? That comment is beneath even you Jim.

#2. Too agressive? Times are hard and about to get harder. Do you want someone in office that pussyfoots about the issue?

#3. Looking and soundig gracious ..ROFLROFL
Obama can look and sound the part, but he is nothing more than an actor in this case. The man has no substance as attested to by his answers during the debate.

If you really don't think there are people that vote on ridiculous things like how the candidates look you don't realize how this country works.....there are so many factors that play into it.

Alot of people don't vote on issues I thought everyone knew this?

Yeah, right. We are all going to vote based on his looks. You think he is the next coming of Miss America and all the rest of the world sees is an empty shell of a black man ... right?
