Obama went from +18 on "understands your needs and problems" to +56. He went from -9 on "Prepared to be president" to +21.
Another big one...
THE DEBATE’S EFFECT ON OPINIONS OF THE CANDIDATES
(Among uncommitted voters who watched debate)
Obama McCain
Better 46% 32%
Worse 8 21
No change 46 47
It's gonna be pretty hard for people to spin this as a McCain victory.

I don't know how anyone could spin that debate as a McCain victory. His answers to the questions don't matter. This is a television pageant. Looking good is what matters.
Every election season at this time, polls move on people's gut feelings based on what they see from these candidates reactions, and the ever-flighty "who looks presidential."
Whether McCain got an answer right or wrong, he didn't look presidential up there. He was flustered, angry, and condescending. He's started on the same bad foot that Gore started on, and is now left to try and re-invent himself for the next debate while Obama gets to play the role of Bush's "what you see is what you get" guy.

I was really flummoxed by his body language and gesticulations. He had to know that how you regard your opponent's answers are just as important as your own answers. It's almost like he was completely incapable of containing his contempt for Obama having the audacity to have a philosophical difference with him.
Someone in his campaign had to have told him that graciousness scores points just as much as accuracy. And yet, as the night progressed he resorted to more and more petulant attacks and personal digs at Obama.
I'm not one of the "scared to death at the thought of him having the nuclear codes" types, but after tonight's performance, I can see why such a group exists.

w-t-f???
He's bought into this Con culture contempt war hook-line-and sinker from day one of the Convention-they think it works, and frankly, who could blame them--it has in the past. Fortunately, it appears we are no longer in the past.
Sh**--I can easily picture him jump-starting WWIII

I could definitely see him starting another two wars...I don't think he'd start lobbing nukes like a little league coach with a fungo bat, though.

I have MSNBC on.....and I'm watching guys like Joe Scarborough say Obama is bloodless and has no heart....
I think it's kinda funny really, god forbid a guy be smart right?

Chuck Todd gets extra credit on the Butch Davis reference.
Yes Mecca, like BO hasn't figured out exactly who he is by this point  I would've liked to see him add some more things in last night, but it's clear he knows better than the pundits how to conduct himself.

no, but his position on Spain was a clue for me...more Bush "my way or the highway" diplomacy. And that's how I would've liked to see BO approach it--ie-how to you propose we have more $ and other assistance in the WOT if we continue to alienate potential allies the way you seem intent...just like W.

I personally thought what he did was smart, no matter how hard you rail your opponent atleast 65% of the debate is your demeanor, how you look and how you are perceived.
Gore made Bush look dumb a bunch of times and still didn't win, it's about more than just proving points.

good point! one of the guys this am made the point that one of Mac's assets is his sense of humor--& he certainly didn't display it last night. The guy has just sold himself over entirely to this ugly-azz Con-carnival --not even recognizable of who he used to be imho.

scarborough doesn't understand that obama isn't trying to appeal to bloodthirsty republicans...
Obama knew exactly what he was doing and whom he was appealing to last night...all indications are that he suceeded....
most pundits can't see past their own noses

Obama inspires people and has the one of the all time best campaign for grass roots support and volunteers.
Scarborough and Buchanan's argument that Obama does not connect with people makes little sense.
A first term senator with a Kenyan father, who abandoned him, has defeated Hillary Clinton in a democratic primary, and is the favorite to win the White House.

I think he was told by his campaign not to look at Obama and not to address him directly. I think they thought that a show of contempt by McCain would somehow hurt Obama. I also think they were wrong.

McCain kept sticking his tongue out to wet his lips. But he kept doing it really fast, it reminded me of a lizard. I was kind of disturbed by it.

The question should be, is it really in Scarborough and Buchanan's nature to listen to what any black man would be saying in the first place...

That's a good Obama bullyboy. They're critics of Obama so they *must* be racists!
