KU knows it can’t have letdown against Iowa State

<!-- END /pubsys/production/story/story_assets.comp --> LAWRENCE | Banks Floodman would have preferred that fans hadn’t rushed the field after Kansas’ dramatic win over Iowa State in 2005.
Of course, the KU students did it anyway, mirroring the players who were sprinting toward kicker Scott Webb, who had just knocked in the game-winning field goal in overtime. Whether Floodman, a senior linebacker on that team, liked it or not, that was KU football. Beating Iowa State was cause for celebration.
The Cyclones came into that game ranked No. 25 in the country, needing a win to clinch the program’s first berth in the Big 12 championship game. Iowa State, under coach Dan McCarney, had been building toward that goal for a decade.
“It was great to be able to beat them and not let them celebrate a Big 12 North title on our field,” said Floodman, who now works for the Williams Fund at KU. “As seniors, we didn’t want to go out like that.”
As No. 16 KU and Iowa State prepare for their Big 12 opener Saturday in Ames, Iowa, the 2005 game is looking more and more like a seminal moment for each program.
The Jayhawks, thanks to the victory over the Cyclones, were invited to the Fort Worth Bowl, where they beat Houston and finished 7-5. Two years later, they shook the very foundation of college football, going 12-1 and beating ACC champion Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Kansas coach Mark Mangino rode his team’s shocking run to consensus national coach of the year honors and a five-year contract extension.
For Iowa State and McCarney, the loss to KU was the beginning of the end. The Cyclones had blown a chance to win the North for the second straight year, each time losing in overtime in their final regular season game. In 2006, Iowa State went 4-8, and McCarney was fired.
“You hate to say it all came down to one game or one loss,” said McCarney, now the defensive line coach at Florida. “But we struggled that next year, and Mark’s program has taken it to another level.”
In 2008, a Kansas squad with Big 12 North title aspirations simply can’t afford a loss to Iowa State — a complete reversal from the situation three years ago.
“Things have changed a lot,” said KU running back Angus Quigley, a freshman on the 2005 team. “They were ranked. It has kind of flip-flopped. We just need to go out there to Ames, Iowa, and take care of business. They’re going to come out and play hard. That’s how we got to where we are. We’re going to have to go up there and earn it.”
Certainly, both the Cyclones and the Jayhawks have had to earn their success on the gridiron. Considered basketball schools at their core, Iowa State and KU have risen in football at the other’s expense. From 2000-05, when the Cyclones went bowling in five of six seasons, Iowa State went 4-2 against KU. From 2003-07, when the Jayhawks were bowl eligible in four of five seasons, KU went 4-1 against Iowa State.
Perhaps McCarney should have seen the writing on the wall when KU stomped Iowa State 36-7 in 2003, Mangino’s second season. Just a year before, in 2002, the Mangino era opened at Iowa State, where the Cyclones pounded the Jayhawks 45-3.
“That was kind of the realization that this isn’t going to be an overnight thing,” said Floodman, a sophomore on Mangino’s first team. “We had a lot of the same players, a lot of guys that, to be honest with you, were used to losing.”
Yet, there the Jayhawks were in 2003, winning the season finale against Iowa State in convincing fashion to go 6-6 and qualify for the Tangerine Bowl. When the game was over, KU fans tossed tangerines onto the field.

“They weren’t oranges,” Floodman said, “but that was a lot of fun.”
The fun was only beginning for KU against the Cyclones. The last two seasons, the Jayhawks have beaten Iowa State 41-10 and 45-7. The tide has turned, but KU knows from its own story that things can change quickly.
Second-year Iowa State coach Gene Chizik has the Cyclones 2-2 with two close losses on the road at UNLV and Iowa. And, with Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech off the schedule, the Cyclones can think realistically about a bowl berth in 2008. An upset win over KU on Saturday would only get things moving faster.
“It’s only (Chizik’s) second year, and he hasn’t gotten his players in either,” said KU receiver Dexton Fields. “I expect them to be making a run for it here in a couple of years.”
But, for now, it’s KU’s time. A loss to Iowa State would be unexpected and debilitating to the Jayhawks. That new reality isn’t lost on Floodman.
“With the success of the team, obviously, they’ve matured,” Floodman said. “Back a few years ago, I don’t think everybody expected to win. Now, the team expects to win. That’s a huge sign of maturity.”

I remember that game well. My uncle was in from Fort Dodge, travelling with the Iowa State faithful. He told me the Cyclones were going to win by 30. My cousin Julie was sitting there with her ISU gear on, and I pointed her out to the crowd, "She's a KU grad! She's a KU grad!".

It was my cousin Nik's last year playing at Iowa State, and he pulled in an interception. I was sitting in a KU section adjacent to Iowa State fans. I remember telling them at the beginning of the second half that they were fated to lose that game in overtime. How prophetic it was.

did they really rush the field just because they beat a ranked team?

It was more because of the probable bowl berth resulting from the win that they rushed.

I'm not a fan of rushing the field/storming the court. Act as if you've been there before and expect to be there again.

You have to remember that this was a time when KU football was just becoming relevant. There were a lot of bad years in between. The name Terry Allen to KU football fans is like the name Lin Elliot is to Chiefs fans. There were a lot of lean years under TA. Those were teams that got kicked by KSU for 11 years straight. Some of those games were really, really bad. They would come to Lawrence and pummel KU like a FBS team. Those were very dark days.

As for the rushing the field thing, I think KU fans rushed the field and tore down the goal posts 3 times in a 2 year span from 2004-2005. Haven't seen that happen since then.

That's why it doesn't matter. #16 with one loss, and they still have OU, Texas, TTech, and Mizzou. I've said all along that I'd be absolutely thrilled if they went 2-3 versus those 4 plus USF, which would be a 9-win season. I'll be pleased with back-to-back bowl victories. Of course I don't want them to lose today, but in the grand scheme of things the margin of victory doesn't mean a thing.

Hopefully they can get it turned around. Those freshman OTs suck shit, but they are freshman, so hopefully they are making strides. They looked better today than they did against SFU, but this D wasn't agressive. The DLine HAS to step it up if they want to stay as one of the top teams in the Big 12. I think at the skill positions, KU is pretty good. But man alive the lines suck.

Wow, that is a great post. I'm glad some of you rival fans are logical.

I got home after playing football and turn this game on(I dvr'd it). I almost shut it off. I decided to stick it out just in case. Man, that first half could not have been played much worse by KU or much better by ISU. Then KU came out and completely dominated the 3rd and early 4th quarters. I didn't care for the way they kept blitzing a lot of people late in the game. The Cyclones were leaving extra guys in to pick up those blitzes and running routes that took advantage of blitzes. This team did a fantastic job of keeping their heads and coming out fired up and focused in the 2nd half. I am very proud of my Jayhawks.
