Okay, I have a little idea that has germinated in my mind and sprouted like that potato that you grew in third grade by poking toothpicks in it and suspending it in a glass of water.

I'd like to have a presidential race on Chiefsplanet.

Not for president of Chiefsplanet, but rather for president of the U.S. What policies and stuff would win over the Chiefsplanet electorate? It'd be way cool if it was actually halfway serious, but if it descends into the junior high middle school realm in which most of us dwell, that'll be entertaining, too.

So here are the rules, and we'll see if anyone is interested.

1. I will be the organizer of the presidential race, as you'll see below. I may seek a few bipartisan volunteers to help me run it.

2. If you would like to declare your candidacy, you may do so by declaring your candidacy in this thread and sending me $500 in casino cash. (This is to ensure that we have serious candidates.) Recall that you can fund-raise by having other people transfer casino dollars to you.

Edit: To pay your casino cash, click on the casino link, scroll to the bottom, and click the "transfer to another player" link.

3. When you declare, you must declare your candidacy for the Democratic Party or the Republican party.

4. We will then hold primaries for each party. I will put out some thread(s) calling for positions on specific (mostly serious) issues, and you must answer the questions as posed. (This will probably require 30 minutes or more of the candidates' time to complete.) It will cost you another $500 in casino cash to have your name on the ballot.

5. We will then hold a debate where I will ask questions that allow you to elaborate on your positions and bash other candidates for their positions. (This will probably take an hour or more of the candidates' time.) The bulk of these questions would be serious policy questions, though you may occasionally get something else thrown in. The price of entry into the debates is another $500 in casino cash.

6. During all of this, we will allow people to run ads in a special "political ads" thread. In this thread, you can share your visions, bash other people, dig up old threads and posts to embarrass your opponents, or post photos of interns that they are sodomizing. This will be the fun part in which all bets are off and there are no rules.

7. During this time, I will provide free polling services so we can watch the race develop.

8. We will have the primary votes, and each side will be narrowed down to one candidate.

9. Those two candidates will then have a chance to revise their position papers, and we will hold another debate. The ads will continue unabated. For the price of $50,000 casino, anyone may enter the race as a maverick third party.

10. This will culminate in a presidential vote between the two candidates. As a bit of a twist, the votes will occur by electoral college, which I'll calculate during the primaries. Essentially, members whose handles start with the letter A will represent one state, B another, C another, and so on. Obviously, the C state will be bigger than the Q state, and I'll provide that information.

11. The winner will get all of the collected casino cash since the president always gets rich in America.

Ideally, this would actually be an interesting and somewhat serious political discussion. We'll see.

Anyone interested?

It probably should go in the DC forum, but I'm hoping we can leave it out here for a couple of days to drum up interest and then move it over.

So if you're interested in running for president, please post below and send me casino cash to register.

An initial short list would include:
NewPhin (Very well-thought liberal)
Kotter (I disagree with him much of the time (in a huge way) but he'd bring some balance to the ticket)
Jilly (Just for the first husband and wife 1-2 ticket)
Hamas (just for the fun of him telling my opponents to kill themselves)

Banyon (smarter than me)

It is with the blessings and honor of the American people that I look to the horizons. The opportunities afforded to all of us by our framers entitle us to constantly strive for that more perfect union.

And I feel that too often, our vision gets lost. We often forget how important this moment is to us. It gets muddled in our direct cheap shotting. It gets lost in our partisan scorecards. It gets ignored as we strive for the intermediate victories when it's the most serious ones we should dedicate ourselves towards. I don't believe that I am the perfect candidate, but I do believe that I've got the record of keeping my eyes on the prize, never deterred by the topical flavors of the day that do nothing but mire us in unproductive hand-wringing.

It is with these goals in mind, as well as an undying appreciation for the potential of this great land, that I declare for the Democratic Presidential Nomination to run for President of the United States.

That said, UP is a poopyhead beltway insider. She has a decorated record of putting answers aside in order to score direct personal points with Americans she disagrees with, the exact kind of rhetoric I'm looking to curtail as commander-in-chief.

Vote for me, however, and I'll consider her as my running mate.

Grand total? Two replies.

UP is just not striking the right tones of conversation to engage everyday Americans (however superior you fine Planeteers may be). She just isn't serious about knowing what Americans care about. Whereas my threads are routinely considered beacons of decent conversation about the issues of the day, and often go several pages. This shows that I am far more in touch with the average Planeteer -- not that that's any major accomplishment. Basically anybody is more in touch with the average Planeteer than UP.

Expect plenty of policy differentials between UP and myself over the next couple weeks. Expect me to outline my positive plan for America that connects with the thinking Chiefs fan. And expect the occasional dirty tactic that will not clearly state, but instead will deftly hint at, UP's questionable sexual orientation.

I want to accept the endorsement of a man for whom I hold nothing but the highest regards.

Sully was a proud candidate that stood for family values and a moderately progressive agenda. A fixture of ChiefsPlanet for three years now, he has provided us great company and impressed us with the good head on his shoulders. A man of uncommon passion, he was the very first to start the RIP thread for George Carlin after his passing. A family man, he assured that his wife was safe when his home was overrun by the Independence SWAT team.

It's a mixed bag, of course. I believe I am the most qualified candidate for our times, so in a way this furthers my vision for this country. But there's a part of me that would have loved the exchange, the intellectual rat-tat-tat with Sully.

I humbly accept Sully's endorsement, and I can only hope it is followed by many more, for no goal can be accomplished by one man, but anything can be accomplished when we work together.

I dilligently continue on my quest to make America better for all Chiefs fans. May God bless you all.

In the past few days, UP has only started three topics to my half dozen.

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=193115

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=193053

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=192720

THAT IS A COMPLETE LOAD OF SHIT.

Ultra Peanut gets to the Point.

The reason there aren't any responses to any of those threads is because UP got to the point in the thread starter, and everyone agreed.

I nominate myself for the libertarian party candidacy. And as my first act of civil disobedience, I will not pay the $500.

My major agenda is as follows:
1) Restoring power to the states
Return the issues of abortion, education, and gay marriage back to the states. These issues can be resolved on local levels which gives more power to voters such as yourselves.

2) Ending the GWOT and rejecting the Bush Doctrine
Shore up security at home. We are wasting massive amounts of resources overseas, presently.

3) Legalization of all drugs. These can be taxed heavily at the state level for the subsidization of treatment centers.
Addiction, the disease, is the root cause of the problem and this solution addresses it.

4) More transparency in the financial markets and far less government intervention in the economy.
The present crisis was caused by effective government backing of bad loans through freddie and fannie. This insurance, along with a major push to stimulate the credit markets by the federal reserve created the housing bubble we see today. Expecting the government to be able to stem this crisis is the definition of insanity. Additionally, collusion amongst hedge funds must be put to a stop.

I had a lot of debate about the structure of this. I pondered just making up two fake parties, like the Emu Party and the Lizard Party. I pondered making it a Chiefsplanet-issue related election. I pondered having it as just an open multi-party election. I pondered assigning people to a party based on some random variable. But in the end, I think it'll be interesting to debate real issues, and so people would naturally cluster in the directions that the Democrats and Republicans do.

I added the third party option of paying $50,000 so that people could do it, but it would also be the real-world limit that only the rich (or the really good fundraisers) can get in without going through the two parties.

Oh. Got it. From now on I'll bet a bit less of my roll when the stakes aren't there.

Technically, now that I read it further, it's even screwier than that. You essentially lose everything when you place your bet. Then, in order to determine payouts, it multiplies your proportion of the winning bets by the total pot. So the math is actually 4900/5700 = 86%. 86% x 6050 = 5203. So you actually made $303, not $301. The concept's the same, though.

Don't spend it all in one place.

The Bull Moose party, while undoubtedly on the rise in this era of environmental awareness, is nonetheless still a third party, as is the Constitution Party, the Libertarians, the Greens, the Science Party, the Prohibition Party, the Socialists, the Snoopyists, the Dilbertists, and all other non-Democratic and non-Republican parties. Now, pay the $25,000 or join a party, or otherwise the election commission will have no choice but have you killed by the Clintons.
