But it's fucking at Nebraska.

It's a no win situation.

I figure the home field will be good for about 14 points. That said, if I have to make a prediction...

The Huskers aren't too good anywhere. Bo has a long way to go on defense. The offensive line isn't getting it done. I hope Maclin doesn't return kicks because the Huskers' special teams has issues.

And to be honest, I don't care about history, or your trophy case. I just care about this game.

Here's what I want. A decisive enough win to move MU up in the poles, but a nice first half effort by NU, maybe even lead at half, to give something to cheer about on monday. But I think everybody understands that NU doesn't have the horses to keep up with MU.

Missouri aims for a big “First Time Since” at Nebraska

By MIKE DeARMOND

The Kansas City Star

The ultimate “First Time Since” event is poised to be written into Missouri football history.

If the Tigers — ranked No. 4 in the country at 4-0 and established as a double-digit favorite to win at 3-1 Nebraska on Saturday night — actually do it …

It would be the first time since 1978 Missouri has won a college football game in Memorial Stadium, packed with 85,000-plus wanting so desperately to continue the tradition of Cornhusker dominance over the Tigers.

“This is the next notch on our belt,” said Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, the focal point for proud Nebraska fans and football players still angry over a slight he delivered after Mizzou’s 41-6 triumph in Columbia last year.

The quote — “You can’t just play one defense the whole entire game. That’s like high school stuff.” — has been run under the noses of the Nebraska defense like a rare steak. They’ll show Daniel.

“He’ll say what he wants to say,” said Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. “I’ll talk when I’m on that field. That’s how I’ll go about it.”

Nebraska Nation has been so used to giving Missouri the public golf clap — and the private hee-haw — for so many years.

Missouri finally changed part of that in Columbia on Oct. 11, 2003. That’s the day the Tigers ended a 24-game losing streak to Nebraska.

The Huskers have now lost three in a row at Mizzou and the Tigers are primed to rack up another first by winning in Lincoln on Saturday.

Consider all the historic hurdles Missouri has cleared in the last six seasons — a period in which it leads all Big 12 North teams in overall (44) and conference wins (22).

Daniel ticked off some of those achievements from last season.

“Last year, you look at the Colorado game,” he said of the Tigers’ 55-10 victory in Boulder, their first there since 1997.

“The same thing with K-State,” he said of the 49-32 victory in Manhattan, MU’s first there since 1989.

Before beating Kansas 36-28 on Nov. 24 at Arrowhead Stadium, Missouri had not won anything resembling a league championship since 1969, when it shared the Big Eight Conference title with Nebraska. The Border War victory gave Missouri its first Big 12 North Division title.

Being ranked No. 1, however briefly last season, and finishing the season ranked No. 4 were two other firsts in longtime events. So was winning a New Year’s Day bowl game — 38-7 over Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl — for the first time since beating Florida in the 1966 Sugar Bowl.

Does any of that matter today? In a sense, no.

“It’s great history for the fans and stuff,” Daniel said. “But if this team gets caught up in that, like I said, then we’re not going to focus on our goal.”

Winning this game, for starters, is job one. Not suffering the same defeated shock suffered last week by top-five-ranked Southern Cal, Georgia and Florida has been a cautionary tale often repeated this week at Mizzou.

“It’s the fear that every coach has,” Pinkel said. “Some good coaches got beat this week and I’m sure they were getting the message out to their players.

“It’s all about respect and preparation. If you cheat either one of those, you won’t play your best.”

Apparently, no one has discovered a Missouri player who does not recite the same chapter and verse in the two weeks the Tigers have been preparing for Saturday night’s game.

History, they all say, does not matter. Not as much as winning the game does.

“We can’t look back at the last 30 years,” said William Moore, the star senior safety expected to return from a strained ligament injury in his right foot. “We weren’t here.

“We’re going to go in there not the fans’ favorite, but that makes the game more exciting.”

Obviously, these Tigers are confident.

“I’m looking forward to getting booed,” said linebacker Brock Christopher.

At the same time, players and coaches are using the R-word overtime. Nebraska does not have to beg for the respect its football tradition long ago earned.

Neither does first-year Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini, the architect of reigning national champion LSU’s defense.

“Bo Pelini defenses are good,” Pinkel said. “You know they are going to be because he’s the best in the business.

“They have an identity of who they want to be and who they’re going to be.”

Will they be the first Nebraska team to lose at home to Missouri in 30 years?

“You don’t ignore it,” said Missouri nose tackle Jaron Baston. “But this team has put in the preparation. We’ve done everything we can to make sure that we play our best game.

“That’s a long time. So hopefully we can get it done.”

MU VS. NEBRASKA: WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

•“I’ve never gone into a game making concessions. I won’t start this week. We’re going to play the best we possibly can and try to shut them out.” | Nebraska coach Bo Pelini

• “You can’t just play one defense the whole entire game. That’s like high school stuff.” | Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel last season on Nebraska’s not making defensive adjustments during MU’s 41-3 victory over the Huskers

• “That’s his opinion … I couldn’t really care less about his opinion. I know what we have, and I know what we can do against them.” | Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh

• “You embrace it. You like to play in it. All those experiences our players have had in those types of arenas, that helps.” | Missouri coach Gary Pinkel on the challenge of playing in a hostile environment in Lincoln

• “It’s going to be really hostile. We worked on that Saturday. We had two loudspeakers. You couldn’t even hear yourself think. I don’t know how much more louder it could be out there.” | Daniel
