View Full Version : Elections How does McCain voting for the bailout not violate his core beliefs?

I'm not talking about socialism vs. capitalism, although you could make an argument for that, too.
But McCain has inexplicably decided that voters care more about pork spending than anything else this election year, and Palin and he have made fighting earmarks a priority.
Well this bailout bill was initially 3 pages long.
The final version that the President signed? 451.
The remaining 448, if you peruse them at all, is simply pork and additional tax cuts to make the bailout look sexy.
That is a huge log in the eye of McCain conservativism, violated for the "greater good."
And since he voted for it, can we not expect that we'll hear that excuse 10,000 times in the upcoming McCain administration? "I know I'd say I'd veto any bill with pork in it with this pen, but the greater good outweighed my ideology in this case."
No doubt it pissed me off. I was probably going to hold my nose and vote for him. I am pissed at everyone that voted yes right now though.

This is where I really feel that McCain missed a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE opportunity in this election. Had he been totally against it and not signed it(regardless of whether it did or did not pass) he would have forced Barack's hand exposing the fact that Barack has no problem putting this on the back's of the taxpayers and made himself look like the "Maverick" he say's he is looking out for the taxpayer. This would have separated himself from Bush and re-directed the anger of the American people toward the real cause. And it would have legitimized his suspension of the campaign. :thumb:

Rebuilding Homeownership
Homeownership remains key to creating an opportunity society. We support timely and carefully targeted aid to those hurt by the housing crisis so that affected individuals can have a chance to trade a burdensome mortgage for a manageable loan that reflects their home’s market value. At the same time, government action must not implicitly encourage anyone to borrow more than they can afford to repay. We support energetic federal investigation and, where appropriate, prosecution of criminal wrongdoing in the mortgage industry and investment sector. We do not support government bailouts of private institutions. Government interference in the markets exacerbates problems in the marketplace and causes the free market to take longer to correct itself. We believe in the free market as the best tool to sustained prosperity and opportunity for all. We encourage potential buyers to work in concert with the lending community to educate themselves about the responsibilities of purchasing a home, condo, or land.

It violates his core beliefs. On the other hand, Obama voting for it also invalidates his campaign promises of lower taxes and billions of dollars worth of legislation that there just isn't room in the budget for.

Damn those Democrats for tricking poor gullible Bush into signing the bill and so many Republicans into voting for it!
Even more deviously, they tricked Bush's own cabinet secretary into proposing the plan in the first place, damn they are ingenious.
That fact that this thing was so rushed should speak volumes that practically everyone that voted yes didn't give a shit about the average american tax payer.
both Obama and McCain chickened out
they let all the chicken littles scare them in to voting for something that was crap.

You are an anal retentive moron. It is not all about Bush. It's not a republican issue. It's not a democrat issue.
Which part of that baffles you? They are all in it together. Get off your politically built soapbox and realize that you are just as full of shit and a piece of shit as anyone.
You are a phuquing lawyer, you claim to be superior to all but in reality you show yourself to be nothing more than a hack.

It's like arguing with a mentally handicapped child.
This was your original post that I replied to, remember?

You were the one trying to lay this at the feet of one party, not me. I only replied to your partisan BS and pointed out that there was blame to go around, as I have consistently maintained here. To now say that it was my idea to make it partisan, when I was just responding to your post, is transparently pathetic. Nowhere did I ever say that it was one party's fault. That was you.
Making a partisan, blaming post, and then contradicting that post in the space of less than a thread page is yet another reason people hold you in such low regard around here.
And where did I claim to be superior?

McCain should have, it would have solidified his pork spending and maverick image. He was advised of the financial fallout and that many republicans might have followed when the bill needed passed. He took the higher road instead of staying low with it.... I wished he had of. FWIW,David Gergen said it was political suicide for him to vote no .... I see why he did it, I don't like it. I was defending him for it, now I really feel so much different about it, sooooo many people are livid with the bill.
It was a missed opportunity .

That's because Gergen is a hack for the Establishment who fund the major candidates. In truth, it was political suicide for Mac regarding the people or even his base not with the special interests that own him. So Gergen is speaking in code for it being political suicide regarding who own Mac—not with the people.
Same with Obama. Hell, they both voted for it. What makes these two different anyway?
It was a missed opportunity .
Sure was.

When did I ever say that the republicans did not have a part in the mess?
I think you need to stop for a second and stick your head back up your ass.
