With friends like these ...
McCain finds his own radical friend
Steve Chapman

What McCain didn't mention is that he has his own Bill Ayers -- in the form of G. Gordon Liddy. Now a conservative radio talk-show host, Liddy spent more than 4 years in prison for his role in the 1972 Watergate burglary. That was just one element of what Liddy did, and proposed to do, in a secret White House effort to subvert the Constitution. Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.
How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns -- including $1,000 this year.
Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."
Which principles would those be? The ones that told Liddy it was fine to break into the office of the Democratic National Committee to plant bugs and photograph documents? The ones that made him propose to kidnap anti-war activists so they couldn't disrupt the 1972 Republican National Convention? The ones that inspired him to plan the murder (never carried out) of an unfriendly newspaper columnist?
Liddy was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history -- and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law. He has said he has no regrets about what he did, insisting that he went to jail as "a prisoner of war."
All this may sound like ancient history. But it's from the same era as the bombings Ayers helped carry out as a member of the Weather Underground.

(The murder, firebombing, and kidnapping plots were never carried out; the break-ins were.) During the 1990s, Liddy reportedly instructed his radio audience on multiple occasions on how to shoot Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents and also reportedly said he had named his shooting targets after Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Liddy has donated (http://mediamatters.org/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.opensecrets.org%2Findivs%2Fsearch.php%3Fname%3Dliddy%252C%2Bg%26state%3D%26zi p%3D%26employ%3D%26cand%3Dmccain%26all%3DY%26sort%3DN%26capcode%3Dbmv7j%26submit%3DSubmit) $5,000 to McCain's campaigns since 1998, including $1,000 in February 2008 (http://mediamatters.org/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.nictusa.com%2Fcgi-bin%2Ffecimg%2F%3F28990643217). In addition, McCain has appeared on Liddy's radio show during the presidential campaign, including as recently as May (http://mediamatters.org/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.trumix.com%2Fpodshows%2F2943209). An online video (http://mediamatters.org/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2Fvideoplay%3Fdocid%3D3888810765796113705%26vt%3Dlf%26hl%3Den) labeled "John McCain On The G. Gordon Liddy Show 11/8/07" includes a discussion between Liddy and McCain, whom Liddy described as an "old friend." During the segment, McCain praised Liddy's "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great," said he was "proud" of Liddy, and said that "it's always a pleasure for me to come on your program."
Additionally, in 1998, Liddy reportedly (http://mediamatters.org/items/200809190012#20081004) held a fundraiser at his home for McCain. Liddy was reportedly scheduled to speak at another fundraiser for McCain in 2000. The Charlotte Observer reported on January 23, 2000, that McCain's campaign vouched for Liddy's "character":
His [McCain's] campaign officials said Liddy's character will appeal to many voters because he was following orders from President Nixon and kept silent afterward.
"His (Liddy's) judgment might be in question, but I don't think his character is," said Ed Walker, the York County chairman of McCain's campaign. "He was following orders just like any good soldier, and he didn't tell on anybody. He felt like he was on a mission and kept his silence."
Liddy's 2000 speech was reportedly canceled due to bad weather.

You've just pinpointed the reason for deafening silence from the Repubilcans. They can't defend McCain against his associations without effectively defending Obama for lesser associations.
I will defend both from their association with these crazed radial loons. But that's not permissable for Repubilcans, because this seems to be their last bullet. So reason and dignity be damned, right?

I’ve yet to read your defending of Gramps. Link please?
Ayers is a terrorist. Liddy is an eccentric.

I actually left a sentence out of that post, but to be clear, I said "will" so pointing to that sentence and demanding a link to past statements is pointless.
But I will defend both men (plus a bonus defense of Palin). Almost all conservatives are going to have some association with Liddy, he's made himself into a reformed citizen who's an institution in Conservative politics. Palin's association with him had nothing to do with his violent terrorist efforts in the past. It had to do with his life as a reformed citizen. Same with McCain. Same with Obama and Ayers.
It's actually pretty easy, if you try it.

Ayers was never convicted of any crimes , unlike Keating McCain buddy Liddy who has committed treason against his Country again convicted felon 4 years in Prison .
In 1998 Liddy hosted a fundraiser at his house for John McCain's re-election campaign at which guests could have their pictures taken with McCain and Liddy.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._Gordon_Liddy#cite_note-5) Over the years, Liddy has made four contributions totaling $5,000 to Senator John McCain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McCain)'s campaigns -- including $1,000 in 2007. In November 2007 Senator John McCain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McCain), 2008 Presidential candidate, went on Liddy's radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain replied. I don't dispute that. But I'm sure that even jAZ would agree that was a burglary, not an act of domestic terrorism.
Awesome! Can I play?
Libby's actions were part of an effort to subvert Democracy, not a property crime like Ayers'.

Who is Libby?
Ayers did that?
Personally? I don't know. WU was suspected of it, however.
Ooh! I wonder what deaths I can appear to attribute to Liddy and thereby associate with McCain and then assert that the GOP is suspected of!?!

jAZ is making a rather feeble attempt to equate the two. They are not comparable. He's an attorney and is allowed to do that under the elitist code of ethics.

So I guess you aren't a terrorist if you plan and don't actually carry them out, but it is still okay to subvert the principles of democracy and be proud of that, does that some it up for the Liddy apologists?
We should suspect a greater association than Obama has suggested with Ayers even though he has repudiated his actions, BUT ignore or give no significance to the fact that McCain has lauded his good buddy and campaign contributor convicted felon G.Gordon Liddy, who among other things thinks we should shoot federal agents in the head....Country First indeed!

I was under the impression that Ayers' group actually carried out terrorist acts. Did Liddy?
No, but he conspired to murder a reporter (Jack Anderson) who wrote bad things about Nixon, and he conspired to kidnap anti-war protesters.
Conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit kidnapping are very serious felonies that can carry a life sentence.
Logical

You are attempting to equate Ayers' past with Liddy's, no? That they were both terrorists?
If so, I think actions speak much louder than words.
Convicted actions speak really, really loud Donger. In fact attemting to subvert the constitutional process though a crime you were convicted for is even more significant. Liddy unrepentent also!!!

What does that have to do with McCain hiring a lobbyist for Saddam Hussein to head up his presidential transition team?
That's ok, it's not like there is anything for the guy to do. It doesn't take much transition planning for McCain to go back to the Senate.....:)
Liddy has ... plott(ed) (http://mediamatters.org/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fbooks.google.com%2Fbooks%3Fid%3DYRty_4HT_8kC%26pg%3DPA171%26dq%3DWe%2Bdevised%2Ba %2Bplan%2Bthat%2Bentailed%2Bbuying%26ei%3D0hrTSIybEoTkygSg3uDpAw%26sig%3DACfU3U3kI1DJ3zZ1TIhfgmILplU-GA0Vmg%23PPA171%2CM1) to firebomb the Brookings Institution;

Nixon tapes: Ruthless, cynical, profane
Posted: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 1:39 PM by Domenico Montanaro
From NBC’s John Rutherford
Richard Nixon's reputation takes a fresh pounding every time the National Archives releases another batch of audio tapes from his presidency, and today's opening of nearly 200 hours of Nixon White House recordings is no exception.
Again and again, Nixon comes across as ruthless, cynical and profane in conversations with staff members between November and December 1972.
Here are some examples:
-- On July 1, 1971, Nixon instructs Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman to have someone break into the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.:
"I can't have a high-minded lawyer ... I want a son-of-a-b----. I want someone just as tough as I am. ... We're up against an enemy, a conspiracy that will use any means. We are going to use any means... . Get it done. I want it done. I want the Brookings Institution cleaned out and have it cleaned out in a way that has somebody else take the blame."
[...]
Today's release was the 12th of Nixon White House tapes since 1980. Approximately 2,217 hours of tape recordings are now available to the public.

Nixon in many ways was a very good president. He had all the tools. Unfortunately he was also a power-mongering paranoid total f'n lunatic who had no respect for the rule of law, especially when applied to him.
I find his latter-in-life resurrection as some kind of respected senior statesman a complete joke.
