It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer.

I'm surprised that question could offend anyone.

Ms. Dunham may not have voted for Sen. Obama. She's wasn't exactly a member of his target demographic. And the fact is that she's dead, so her vote should be discarded if it has been cast.

I know about that. My grandmother was 85. She was like my 2nd mother. I absolutely loved her to death. I also know that it was time for her to go. She had been struggling for a while. So it made her death easier for me to accept. When someone is in their death bed saying, "i am ready to go home". I just couldnt get sad about it. It made me happy.

It is not about lavishing praise it is about having respect for the dead regardless if you like the person or not.

I have never posted any derogatory or classless statements on this board or anywhere else when someone has died.

Obama's grandmother dies after battle with cancer
<hr style="color: rgb(204, 204, 204);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --><!-- message --> http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/...dma/index.html (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/03/obama.grandma/index.html)

(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died following a bout with cancer, Obama and his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, said Monday.

Barack Obama and his grandmother Madelyn Dunham are seen together in this photo from 1979. She was 86.

At a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, Monday night, the Illinois senator said "she has gone home and she died peacefully in her sleep with my sister at her side."

"I'm not going to talk about it long because it's hard to talk about," he added.

Obama remembered her as "one of those quiet heroes we have across America, who aren't famous ... but each and every day they work hard. They look after their families. They look after their children and their grandchildren."

In a statement released Monday afternoon, Obama and his sister said that Dunham was "the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility." Watch CNN contributors discuss Obama's grandmother

"She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure."

Dunham passed away peacefully at her home shortly before midnight Sunday night (5 a.m. ET), campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told CNN. She said Obama learned of her death around 8 a.m.

Obama's republican rival, Sen. John McCain, issued a statement Monday afternoon:

"We offer our deepest condolences to Barack Obama and his family as they grieve the loss of their beloved grandmother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them as they remember and celebrate the life of someone who had such a profound impact in their lives."

The Democratic presidential candidate left the campaign trail on October 23 and flew to Honolulu, Hawaii, to spend the day with Dunham, whose health deteriorated after she suffered a broken hip.

His wife, Michelle Obama, filled in for him at events in Columbus and Akron, Ohio, on October 24.

Obama said in an interview taped for that day's "Good Morning America" that Dunham had been "inundated" with flowers and messages from strangers who read about her in Obama's 1995 book, "Dreams From My Father."

"Maybe she is getting a sense of long-deserved recognition toward the end of her life," he said.

The candidate resumed his campaign on October 25.

Obama has spoken often about his grandmother -- who helped raise him -- as an integral figure in his youth and how she struggled against the glass ceiling in her career. He and his family traveled to Hawaii in August to visit her.

"She's the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life," he said in his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. "She poured everything she had into me. And although she can no longer travel, I know that she's watching tonight, and that tonight is her night

Obama's Grandmother's Absentee Ballot will be Counted by State of Hawaii
November 03, 2008 8:21 PM

ABC News' Tahman Bradley, Rigel Anderson and Arnab Datta Report: While Sen. Barack Obama's late grandmother Madelyn Dunham will not live to see the outcome of this historic election, her 2008 vote will count.

Hawaii Chief Elections Officer Kevin Cronin told ABC News this evening that the absentee ballot cast by Dunham before she passed away will count.Cronin said Dunham's absentee ballot was received on October 27 and found to meet the requirements of a valid absentee ballot and will therefore be counted with the rest of the state's ballots tomorrow.

I wonder if Hawaii has early voting. If they do I guess they'll have to throw out her vote.

Yes, we have early voting. I think in her case she voted absentee because she couldn't go out. I think the vote still counts because she voted legally in the time period allowed for voting. Since voting is anonymous there is no way to tell which ballot was hers.

I think this is correct as a woman who was dying voted for Hillary Clinton on her death bed and it counted.

You are right and I posted this earlier

It's not election day. On election day she will not be eligible to vote.Depends on the state, in CA had she cast a mail in vote it would count.

HonestChieffan

Actually, there were two weeks worth of "election day" in Hawaii. If you were required to vote only on election day then none of the early votes would count.

For you CB

Thanks for clearing that up.

so you think anyone who dies between the time they vote and the actually election should have their vote removed?

including the soldiers?

I'd support discarding the vote if the soldier dies before the polls open in the state in which he or she is registered.

Here, if election officials leave the ballot in the envelope until election day, I believe they know whose ballot is inside.

I could be mistaken. I've already sent mine in, so I can't check.

Officially, and legally, the polls open when absentee balloting begins, and when early voting begins. At least in Hawaii.

The polls were certainly open last week here in Hawaii when I voted. I didn't sneak in in the middle of the night or anything.
