Not that I'm complaining as I am a Gannon fan, and it HAS been some time, but I don't recall him rolling out as much as Thigpen does, as he was just damn good at shucking & jiving pass rushers.

But, it has been awhile so who knows?

Look at their wrists....

Notice something? Thigpen has the ball cocked so he will need to twist his wrist to throw the ball. You don't see that with Montana. Reason? Quicker release with less pain in the elbow after the game.

But even not comparing the photos....was Montana as mobile as Thigpen? I seriously don't know as I didn't see Montana when he was young.

Tyler Thigpen, Costal Carolina University

I am not pimping Bones as the QBoTF.

I'm just pointing out that he has actually performed in a real game, which neither Sippio or Shay can lay claim to.

However, as for Cassell's performance, although he put up over 400 yards in that game, I would call that the least impressive 400 yard performance by a QB in history.

Thigpen has been more impressive, by far.

There were a number of passes that Cassell attempted to throw that he just didn't have the arm strength for.

To me, that game just illustrated how much the defense in the NFL has been neutered by the rules.

If you can't consistently get QB pressure, then even mediocre QBs with weak arms can put up yardage.

I wouldn't want to have to rely on Cassell to win games.

All true. But on Thigpen's potential game-winning drive, he was absolutely bailed out on three plays by a hall-of-famer at his best.

Gonzales went back to pick up an errant throw off his shoetops and still managed to back up for more yardage to keep the drive alive early.

He boxed out perfectly to draw PI on the goal line (note to NFL coaches - ALL receivers should get off-season coaching in basketball).

And he stole a risky pass into high traffic away from the defenders for the touchdown. That final drive was ALL Gonzales.

He even set up the potentially winning play on the conversion - breaking away from a mugging and making himself available deep in the endzone if Thigpen could have got the ball there. But Thigpen COULDN'T get the ball there - he didn't have the arm strength to muscle it there falling backwards as he tried, and he didn't have the savvy to set and step into the throw and take the hit, nor the elusiveness to juke the pass rusher and buy an extra half-second. He just didn't have any of the "specialness" that sets the great ones apart.

Don't tell me Thigpen is not the beneficiary of his teammates' excellence like Cassel is.

Again, I am not sold on Thigpen, but he has far better arm strength than Cassell.

I certainly am not going to begin to compare him to any great ones, but a couple of things you mention, stepping into that throw, and a couple of poor decisions in which Tony bailed him out are things that can be learned through experience, or in the case of throwing it up for Tony to bail, that's just what you do with Tony.

The QB he most reminds me of is Big Ben in his early years. Big Ben's elusive and really good at throwing on the run, and he's pretty tough for a QB too.

I wouldn't compare him to Big Ben now, who I think is now one of the best QBs in the league. And I'm well aware that he could quickly turn into Derek Anderson or Trent Edwards in the snap of a finger.
